LEO INTERBOG&TITR.
O Constellation Leo, Will you please to tell
the reason
We all were kept so wide awake at this in
clement season,
Contracting colds in every limb and twinges
of rheumatics,
With staring atyour gleaming phiz from
chill th . d-story attics?
If those sky-rockets did come off, now pray
Why shouldn't we
Have seen the show as well as they who
watched across the sea? •
Why, waste the lot allowed us when the
blinding sun was shining,
.A.nd let five thousand blaze away while all
the world sat dining?
O Leo cruel Leo, when you knew that we
were sold,
And saw our faces still upturned for two
nights through the cold, •
No doubt you whisked your tail in glee, and
smirked your savage face,
To think the grand explosion had gone
whizzing on through space.
If, like a gay deceiver, thus you play your
little jokes,
Depriving men of healthy sleep, and cheat
ing honest folks,
Think you, when you cry "Wolf" again,
that we shall all believe,
And give you one more chance up there to
chuckle in your sleeve ?
You'll try the game again, it seems, as soon
as it. appears
You've swung around the circle there for
three and thirty years;
But though astronomers may strive to see it
from their towers,
You'll find it mighty hard, my friend, to
fool such heads as ours.
For if the books should promise you would
caper round ti'e skies,
And shake the starry rockets down to
nearly daze our eyes,
I would not lift my
. doubting head to watch
your face again
Till fairly pelted into faith by storms of
diamond rain.
Of all the sounding humbugs that I ever
Came across,
From Du Chaillu's gorilla up to Barnum's
wooly horse,
I'd swear, if it were proper, that until this
latest hour
The world's supremest humbug is a me
teoric shower.
