This is owing to• increased • experience, cheaper labor and improved machinery. Quartz mining is a permanent itidiustry, and affords capitalists a safe and very ,remunerative field for investment. Unlike the other `forms of mining, it bene fits the country permanently. The taxable property of Nevada, for instance, has in - creased nearly $500,000 in a single year. Anxious efforts are constantly made to dis cover_ improved_processes of working. Already thenitachlnery in tee is superior to that of the Atistralian mines., The statistics upon this subject , are very interesting. • The largest income of a quartz miner is $182,511. Two'in the same business report over $91.,.. 000. The second largest income in San Francisco, g02,e11, was—that of a-quartz miner. The Bulletin adds: "Fall returns from the principal mining centres of the State would furnish many similar examples of the wealth derived from successful operations, :and would support the idea that the most wealthy citizens of • California are hereafter to be the owners of her best lodes." A WOMAN KILLED BY HER HUSBAND.— :At Dundas,C. W., on Saturday, a man named Wiliam Douglass committed one of the most brutal and cold-blooded mur ders on record. Having hadsomedifficalty with his wife he seized a double-barreled gun and shot her through the heart causing instant death. The unfortunate woman had an infant in her arms at the time of the fatal deed, and the ball narrowly missed the child also. The murderer gave himself quietly into custody. There was intense excitement in Dundee over the affair, and much indignation was expressed towards DOuglass. Igecosi-- Shooting' Extraordinistry. (From the Ritchie county (West Va.) It is not yet completed, but already presents an imposing appearance. The walls of the prison surround . eight acres of ground. These walls are twenty-four feet high, three feet thick at the bottom,- and two and a half at the top. They are surmounted with iron railings. The front wallis ofiron, the other three of solid stone. The main building, ninety by eighty-five feet, is used for the residence of the officers and their families. It also contains theprieon chapel : The cells are on the south :wing, -which is two hun dred and fifty by fifty. feet. These cells, two hundred and eighty in all, are arranged in four tiers. They are three feet wide, sev en feet deep, and seven feet high. Great care is taken to keep them clean, and the ventilation is excellent. The female prison stands by ! I tself; dimensions, 134 by 75. The cells in tht building are nearly twice as large as those of the men. The inmates busy themselves with sewing, washing, and ifoning. A .MEERY SET.—The style of occupation and amtistiment at the baths of. Lank, in ,awitzerland, is thus described: At 5 o'clock "each mornidg, a bell is rung. for the bathers to repair to the baths, and then cometr 011 C of -- the most whimsical scenes thatcenbe imagined. The baths are 'great covered reservoirs, capable of holding from' twenty to fifty persons, and into these the petitions plunge up to their necks in seething'weter, Where they remain no less tJan four hours at, a time, and many of them twice a day— Men and women enter the same tanks, swimming about at will, or fixing themselves behind little floating ta bles, on which they take breakfast, or read books, or play .games of dominoes and chess. It is necessary to relieve the tedium of :so long an :ablution, to do something for amusement's sake, and the songs, the speeches, the repartees, the choruses, the roars of laughters, ' the shouts of applause that follow each other, are endless. All the resources of Frencls vivacity are brought into play to pass the time; and the effect of a half hundred heads, which is all you can see of persons thus variously engaged, is to the last degree droll. A BRILLIANT WEDDING.-A large wed ding party was given last week at Galena, Illinois. The bride was Miss Annie E, Campbell, daughter of Mr. B. H.
