The building has been occupied for about two months by a German, who had with him a woman and a boy. Nobody residing in the vicinity knew the name of the German, or what his busi ness was. There was no furniture in the house and the suspicions of the neighbors were aroused. Lieut. Street, of the Fif teenth District Police, was notified, and on Wednesday night detailed Officers Weeks and Knox to watch the premises. Yester day morning a horse and two wagons were observed to go to the place. Two men, a woman and a boy accompanied the wagons. The officers came out from their hiding - place and succeeded in capturing one of the men, but the others got off in the darkness by going into the woods. The wagons were tan secured by the policemen. One wagon had in it a goat,a milk can and a lot of corn. Lieut. Street obtained a search warrant, and the premises were examined. Not a piece of furniture was found, and it was ascertained that the building had been used as a depository for stolen •goods, the result of depredations upon the farm houses in the vicinity. Among the articles found were 15 bushels of potatoes, 5 bushels of apples, 4 bushels of beets, a lot of pork, 46 live geese, 32 live chickens, and in a closet were two large turkeys, alive, hanging on the wall. As the parties have been in the habit of going to town every other day, it will be observed that a pretty extensive business was carried on. One of the wagons was identified as having been stolen from a place on the Township Line road. About one-half of the other articles have also been claimed.- The remainder are at the Police Station at Frankford, awaiting owners. The man arrested is a German about 26 years of age, and gave his name as George Sol. He is not the man who has apparently been Living in the house. Sol had a hearing before Ald. Holme and was committed. LABCEITIES.—EIeanor Farrington was ar rested early this morning, at Seventh and Baker streets, with a lot of wet clothing in ber possession. She was sent below by Al derman Tittermary. Samuel C. Harris was committed by Re corder Enen for a further hearing, upon the charge of the larceny of a buffalo robe from a Store on Arch street.- A new balmoral sltirt found in his possession is also sup posed to have been stolen. Harris was ar rested at Sixth and Archstreets by Day Ser geant Jeffries. A young woman was before Alderman Haines, this morning, upon the charge of the larceny of a pocket book containing $A the property of James Daily, who keeps a liquor store at Eleventh and Thompson streets. Mr: Daily went out a few days ago and left the pocket ixiok under the counter. The accused. it was in evidence, was seen to - place something in her bosom, while sweeping in that portion of the store. She was held ha $4OO bail to answer. Eon= ROBBEKL—Last evening the house of Mr. Wm; Ryan,No. 236 North Fourth street, was entered a rear win dow, the first getting upon the back building. Mr. Ryan is a manufacturer of shoe findings, and resides in the uppefpart of the premises. One of the family went to a bedroom on the second floor, and found the door locked. This was an unusual cir cumstances, and an inquiry was made. An other visit was made, and it was found that a bureau drawer had been broken open, and 036 in greenbacks had been stolen. The thief made his exit in the same man ner in which he had entered, but first car ried to the third story a heavy trunk fdled with clothing, and ransacked it. Nothing but the money was taken, although a lot of jewelry came in the way of the robber while engaged in his search. • BOBBING A Onuaou..--14ewis Raber, aged twenty-two years, was arraigned, before Alderman Hutchinson, yesterday, upon the charge of robbery , . The sexton of the Fifth Baptist Church, at Eighteenth and Spring Garden streets, discovered a man in the Church; yesterday morning. He notified Officers McCann and Reese, and the premi ses were searched. In the cellar, in the ash bole, Raber was found concealed. In the coal hole was found a lot of very fine carpet which is generally used for the pulpit on occasions of anniversaries, Ltc. This carpet was packed up nicely ready for removal. An entrance to the premises was effected by forcing open a back window. Reber was secured by the policemen. After the hearing he was sent below in default of $3,000 bail to await trial. AssAmannio- A POLICEDIA.N.—John Fer rell was arrested, yesterday, and taken be fore-Alderman Clouds, upon the charge of i having been engaged n the assault upon Officer Oaks, 'at Richmond, on Tuesday night last. Oaks attempted to make an arrest, and was attacked and knocked down by a crowd. Ferrell is; alleged to have kicked him. He was committed in default of $1,500 bail. LUMBERING IN MALNE.—The Bangor (Maine) • Whig says the lumbering business of that state for the past season—especially that - of the Penobscot and Aroostook val leys—has been very prosperous. In conse quence of the ample supply of water for sawing, and the lively demand for sale, the amount manufactured and sold has been very much larger that that of any year for a long time past—and the prices have been good and remunerative. The Bangor sur vey is already some sixty millions in ad vance of thatof last year, and will probably go twenty or thirty higher (say two hundred and twenty-five millions in all) if the river continues open to December as usual. This large manufacture, survey and sale must, we suppose, leave over a smaller surplus of old logs for next''year's consumption than usual. 142: 142. 143 143 143 THE INUNDATIONS IN FRANCE.-A Paris correspondent says: "No less than six col umns of small type appear in the Moniteur, giving details of the disasters caused by the late inundations. The report is extremely interesting, and I only regret that time fails me to give you a r6sunie of it. The most salient fact is that twelve millions will be required to repair the injuries done to pub lic works alone. One detail will probably interest English travelers. In a few hours six kilometres of the road over Mount Clings was destroyed, one of the principal bridges of the Victor Emmanuel Railway broken to pieces, and communication completely inter rupted between St. Jean de Maurienne and the Italian frontier for sixty-faur kilom e tres, or thirty-two Engiish miles."
