(From "AU the Year Round.") MT CHURCH IN TOWN. 11Iy church in town! It fronts our square, With Gothic portals,--Scott designer,-- Tall epire, and painted windows rare. There's nothing in all London finer. A church - that'a counted "very high," A ritualistic rector owning, Who makes a claim to heaven rely On crosses, candies and intoning. 11. And crowds of worshipers come there, Who give one morning of the seven To treading with exceeding care - A fashionable road to heaven, Fine ladies who low bending pray, And sigh for services in Latin, And mortify the, flesh each day In gleaming robes of silk and satin. The curate, "such a dear," you know, Airs a white hand to turn his pages; I hardly think St. Paul did so, When preaching to Athenian sages. His doctrine, if it have a fault, Stands much in need of force and flavor, .And makes me think the Gospel salt Has very nearly lest its savor. Where Dives sits, I look in vain For Lazarus, even at the portal; I wonder, does their creed maintain The rich man only is immortal? .And yet my mind is somewhat eased: So vain and vapid is the preaching, That Lazarus hardly would be pleased To'gather fragments of such teaching. It would be worthier of the times, And talk of charitable graces, If we took care the Sunday chimes Should sometimes sound in silent places. The broidered altar cloth might tell Of pious hands and yet be plainer, A simpler, homelier rite were well, So should the poor man be a gainer. [For the Philadelptda Evening Ballet - in.] Elstorre %neon suiaabeth. Madame Ristori's first engagement in New. York being concluded, she is now, as you are aware, playing a brilliant series of soles in Boston. It is in anticipation of her approaching visit to Philadelphia that I send - you the following pages with relation to her Queen Elizabeth, a performance so extraordinary that mere words fail to do it justice., Imagine a handsome, graceful, queenly woman, entrancing the beholder so com pletely by her perfect identification with the character which, she assumes, that all re membrance of the seeress is utterly lost, and you Seem to be in the midst of the English court in ;days of old, listening to Queen Bess's very self. Ristori's acting of this part soars entirely above criticism. It is faultless. Still, there are salient points in i t which deserve prolonged description. From the moment when Hudson exclaims: "La Regina!" and Ristori, grand and ma jestic, sweeps with consummate grace upon the stage, you are enthralled. You have before you an actress who never trips upon her robes, who is neverawkward, whose by play ,is better than the " points " of. most others. Her voice is music; her presence, majeety; her smile, fascination; her gesturea, grace. The very regal dignity that invests her completes the illusion created by that rare ,perfection and splendor of costume in which she is unapproachable. Her jetty locks are hidden beneath false red ones, and resplendent with diamond solitaires. Her eyes, which are blue, harmonize with these golden tresses, while her complexion, which has none of the swarthiness of the Italian, is not at variance with them. Her beantifal mouth and teeth, her curved lips, whose peculiar form, and feasibility seem to adapt them to the liquid harmony of her most choice Italian, fix the gazer's eye. You long for her words, and when she smiles, , you understand that Leicester, Essex and tutti lemma should have 'loved. Yet how astute, how terrible the " virgin queen" becomes as the play progreises ! How you. hang in horror upon the deed that condemns Mary Stuart! How yon thrill and weep when she weeps over the dead Essex But to retrace my steps: let us go hack to the scene where she dictates two letters at the same time, one of them to Leicester—to whom, greatly to her indignation, the crown of Belgium has been offered, the other to Popham, permitting the performance of "Henry the Eighth," and ordering that Shakspeare's debts shall be paid and the poet released from prison. This scene is a triumph of art. Enraged at Leicester, she bids Davison, who is seated at a table a few yards from her, to begin his letter: "Orgogliorissono Conte, le corone non sono fatte per la vostra testa!" ("Most arrogant Earl, crowns were not made for your headr2) - and continues to pour out a letter full of wrath to the Earl, while breaking off at the end of every line to dictate, in most soft and musical accents, that through. which Shakespeare is to be set' at liberty. The rapid change of tone, expression and manner,as this queen--who justly says: "I am king!"—turns from one to the other, was - never - approached, - latch less equaled, on American boards. It is consummate act ing and greeted with rapturous appreciation even by that portion of the audience to whom Italian is a sealed tongue. We pass the many passages in which the great statesman is so.vividly brought before us that we live through the reign, as it were, in a single night, and come to that one where Ristori makes us hate Elizabeth, that scene where, after signing the death warrant of the fair Stuart, she feigns, to the exasperateel and grief-stricken James, that her will has been unduly forced andlie.s tened. "Ova regina . itna soredla !1.. . . (a queen! a ' later! ) ," she exclaims ... mai, rant t' avrei futta morirel" (Never, never would I have put her to death!!) She feigns fury, she feigns grief, she even, weeps, and when, bending her head, she starts to withdraw, in apparent peni tence, to her oratory for meditation and prayer, the looker-on cannot but admit that lofty ancteastute minds might well find that dark heart an -enigma. Bat the news of the victory of the great Drake is brought in by himself and the exultant queen drops her mask at once. I have ,seen Grisi strike the shield in Norma, but that action, the grace of whieh has beenthe subject for the sculptor and the artist again and again, is cast into the shade when Rittori's fat; hand, unsheath ing the massive sword of - her sire, raises it and swears to *achieve Englendis victory. She is more than gracernl; she is more than - `grand; grand; she is grace, she.is grandiar. I pass by her exquisite scene with Essex where that :courtly noble (persbnated by Giacomo Glech with gr.,eatskill succees) i insinuated himself into' his sovereign's affections and receives the celebrated ring, and I comer° that in which she strikes him in the face with her glove and is defied by the outraged earl. No actress. less perfect could have been' anything but vulgar here. So unwomanly an act reproaches so bitter; rage so intense, ' -311n.st ave - been-Undignified at the hands of any woman who had studied less conscieri=" tionsly or wets devoid of innate refinement god taste. . • .‘ p o i dee faneiullo e "re! tratterent da fanoiulto I!' (Yon are a child and as a child .we'll teeat, yoli !) exclaims Elizabeth as she strikes - the Earl; and when Essex exclaims' An bitterness that . the peers of England re bleeheeed by the cannon's smoke TRH DAIL Y EVENING _BULLETIN ; PHILADELPHIA,: SATURDAY NOVEMBER 10,1866:-7-TRIPLE GREET receive, at a woman's hand, insult upon their faces, when he breaks his sword and hurls- the - fragmente at -her feet,- she shrinks and you see the woman 'who loves once more, you are tonched;.you pardon. Another magnificently , rendered' and striking passage in this role is the scene in which Elizabeth, after a moment of heart rendingprostration at the intelligence of the fact that Essex had sent her the ring and that the Duke of Nottinghath has in.- n•rcepted it, receives the final certainty that the death -warrant has been executed and that the Earl ie no more. The queen van i,hes, the heart-broken woman is before you, moving every pulse of your heart with the agony of her own. A. . breathless audience nightly attests Ristori's triumph When we again behold her,, Elizabeth is stricken with death,-yet-struggling against it. No one would recognize the handsome Ristori—for of a high order of intellectual beauty the Italian lady •is • certainly pos sessed—in the hag. who appears before us. Aged, wrinkled, grief-worn, haggard, bent nearly double and stricken with terrible ykirs, the. majesty of England, the great queen, totters in. When she has crowned James with the regal bauble to which her dying lips have clung in a ghastly kiss, the people shout. She clutches the crown from his head with a trembling, a dying hand, and placing it upon her own brow, defies them to remove it till she is "dead, quite dead !" "Anima del mio Roberto . vienni in oontro, ci seambierento it thud° di pace . . . davanbia Dio! "Eccomi! eccomi.!" (Soul of my Robert, baste thee to meet me—in God's presence we exchange the kiss of peace. I come, I come.) And so she dies, and we, what can we do but weep? We have Tragedy with us, and her name is Ristori. CAROLINE A. FOURNIER. CITY BULLETIN. TA1.1., CITY'S PROGRESS. Everywhere about the city the march of improvement is visible. INCREASE or CAD-M.—The business dis posed of by the last term of the Camden County Courts, of a criminal character, ex- Libits a sad increase of crime. Over one hundred cases were canvassed and disposed of, besides those who pleaded guilty, and those who were fined without that. Many of these were sent to the penitentiary for a term of years others to the Essex county Bones of Correction, others to the county jail, and others again were fined in various sums according to the grade of guilt made out on trial. CAMDEN COUNTY.—The success of the Union Republican ticket in Camden county, by an increased majority, is a gratifying in dication of the purity of our principles. Hon. Edward Settle, for the State Senate and Hon. G. W. N. Custis, for the Assem bly, from Camden, were names that gave power and force to the entire ticket. All the candidates were gentlemen of probity and influence, just such men as are required for the present emergency to lead the great Republican party to increased fature power. IkIANUFACTORIES.—There appears to be a new Impetus given to the manufacturing interests of Camden, and a number of new establishments are to be erected. These enterprises will contribute much towards advancing the future prosperity and growth of the city. PETTY OFFEICCES.—A number of persons have been recently before Mayor Budd, of Camden, charged with petty thieving, ma licious and disorderly conduct, &c.
