Tanori, the hat= chief, who -escaped from Guaymas, was captured by the Libe rals on a vessel bound to Mazatlin, together with twenty others, all of whom were taken back to Guaymas and shot. Tanori , had been decorated by Maximilian with the cross of the Legion of Honor, for services rendered the Imperial cause in Sonora. Among those shot was Dr. Pierson, a nephew of Guayadaro, and the following ImperiarGenerals—Teran U. Berries and J. M. Almada: The Liberals promised to spare their lives if they surrendered peacefully, but executed them. Mazatlan has been placed under martial law. Nnw YOBS., Oct. 31.—A. letter from Ma zatlan, dated the 23cilinstant, says—Military matters are not materially changed. It was generally believed that Corona will make a demonstration on Tepic, and cer tainly fight the French before the evacua tion of Mazatlan. The transports Rhine and Talisman were daily expected to remove the horse; mules and ammunition. Some guns had been taken from the forts, and the forts destroyed. The Imperial,Commissioner had issued a -decree, requiring property holders to pay rent to the Imperial Government instead of to the owners. The goods . of those who re fused to obey were being seized and sold. The bark Francis Palmer had been re leased. - • Tanori, Almada and seventeen others, - were captured in an open boat, unarmed. CHICAGO, Oct. 31.—The Pacific railroad excursionists, on the way to Fort Riley from Philadelphia, passed through this city to-day. • Much excitement was caused here this afternoon, by a report which turned out to be untrue, that the Lake tunnel excavation bad caved in. A convention of the presidents of the dif ferent colleges of this State was held yester day in Chicago. The principal object of the meeting was to secure the distribution of the agricultural college fund among the various colleges. The project meets with much opposition,--Press. TELEGRAPH FAc-SIMILES;Mr. Field has brought out to this country a number of very interesting specimens of the system of telegraphing now in operation between Paris and Lyons, and Paris and Bor deaux, -by which exact copies of the message are produced at either ex tremity of the lines, solely by mechanical means. The message is written on prepared paper covered with a lead-colored surface, which is a non-conductor of the electric fluid, The writing, or drawing, in the ink furnished for the purpose, changes the points touched by it to the opposite electrical char acter. The pendulum is swinging at each end of the circuit in unison. Its upper end is divided into points, say, like a fine tooth comb. The message benig passed over these at one end, sends a current to correspond with the writing or lines, and produces an exact copy of the original upon the prepared paper held to the vibrating pendulum in the distant city. Thus a fac simile of writing and 'signature is furnished without any skill of the operator. A draw ing of the likeness of a thief er absconding clerk is reproduced with minute faithful ness. Patterns of machinery, patterns for bonnets, hieroglyphics, messages in. Chi nese' ()yin an unknown tongue, are copied with as little trouble as the simplest letters of a familiar alphabet. Sosie notices of this have been.given in foreign journals, but no mere verbaldescription can convoy a full idea of the wonderful process. The M elva b ' who insisted, some years ago, that the t graph operator should forward his photo ph over the wires to his sweetheart was only , a little ahead of his age.—Journal of Oommerce. _ Appourriumurs BY THE PnEirnierr.—The President ..to-day. made the following ap pointments SolomonT.
