Serious Charge—William Maddenhaa
keen arrested■ by the Fourteenth District
police upon the - charge of aiding.in the es
cape pt Robert Little, wbo is chafed with
tbe killingof John Hughes. All three men
were einployed' on the farm of 'William
Massey, hear Branchtown. Little'beat'
•Hnghes • so : bad on Satnrday that he died
yesterday. Maddei) knew that the police
were after Little, and instead of detaining
him, informed him of .the faot, and told him
him to get away. He was committed by
Alderman Thpmas. Little has not yet been
arrested, nor is. his whereabouts known.
John Hnghes, the deoeased, was a single
man, about thirty years of age, and resided
at Branchtown.
Charged with Robbery.— Daniel Drain,
alias John Magonigal, was arrested,
day afternoon upon the charge of having'
been concerned in the robbery of the office
of Clarkson& White, No. 2240 Market street,
yesterday morning. The fire-proof safe was
blown open, and about 875 were- stolen.
Drain bad in his pocket a button which had
been left in one of the drawers in the offioe.
He was taken before Alderman Beitler, and
was committed in default of §3,000 bail for
trial.
Larceny. Charles ' McGlnley was
arretted yesterday at Fourth and Chestnut
streets upon the charge of larceny. Itaeeon
that some time since his employerjsent him
with a check for §175 to bank, to draw the
money. Be did draw the money, bat
neglected to band it over to the proper pef
son, and also forgot where fie was employed.
He was hot-seen again until yesterday,
when he was captured. He was locked up
for a hearing.
A. Dishonest- Horse Deader. —Aider-
man Allen had before ■'■ him this morning,
Thomas Sharpe, charged with obtaining
money under false pretences. Itis alleged
that the accused swindled Samnel Wynn,
in the sale of horses. He was committed for a
further hearing.
Another Firemen’s Turnout.—' The U.
S. Hose Company, which has been on a
visit to Lancaster and Reading, will return
to the city this evening. Arrangements
have been made by several companies of
the department to give the U. S. an appro
priate reception.
Re(Jkless Driving.— John Ottinger was
arrested yesterday, at Third street and Gi
rard avenue, for reckless driving, and run
ning his vehicle into and breaking a coal
cart belonging to John McLean. He was
taken before Alderman Wilkins* and was
held for a further hearing.
Bobbed his Employer.— Abraham Baoks
•was before Alderman Shoemaker, this
morning, upon the charge of thedarceny of
$3O from a grocery store, on . Lawrence
street, below Poplar, where lnjrrwas em
ployed. He was committed to answer at
Court.
Frost.—This morning the ground, in the
several sections of the city, was covered
with a heavy white frost. The weather
daring Ihe past two or three days has been
rather winterish, and overcoats and Ares
have been brought fully into use.* :
Factory Accident.— Edward Kerr, em
ployed in the Pekin Mills, at Manaynnk,
baa his right arm badly lacerated, yester
day, by being caught in the belting.
- The Cholera.— The reports of the cho
lera at the office of the Board of Health to
day showed eleven new cases.

Sodden Wealth.— The
(Mass.) Herald says that one day last week
a hard-working young man of that place
received a letter from New York, announc
ing the death of an annt who left a large
estate; a full half million of which will come
to him. He appeals to be a very sensible,
as he is an and temperate man,
and on receiving Intelligence completed his
day’s' work as though nothing had hap
pened, and after .having been to New York
to confirm the facts in the case,has returned
to his daily labors, which he will continue
till the administration of the estate is com
pleted. r
A Menagerie • Let Loose.— The Medina
county (Ohio); Enterprise says that >two
large boa constrictors, the property "of
Stewart Graven, of Congress; Ohio, escaped
from their .keepers, in company with three
other snakes, a short time since. The boas
have not, at last report, been captured. An
alligator escaped, about the same time,
taking possession of a field near at hand,
driving out the cattle and sheep in a very
short space Of time.! Mr. Craven seoured
the.monster by throwing a lasso over him,
and he is now confined in a small compass
hy a heavy board fence. These reptiles
were formerly a part of Dan Bice’s mena
gerie. ' ’ *
The , Nayy.Department is in receipt of
despatches from Com. Coster,, commanding
the United States steamer Monocaby, an
nouncing the arrival of that vessel at Bridge
town,-Barbados, on the 24th uH. The Mo
nocaby put into. Barbados on account of the
illness, and subsequent,death, on the 23d
nib, of Lieutenant'Commander J. C. Chap
lin, the executive officer of the vessel.' Com
mander Caster pays a' tribute to the char
acter of the deceased, “ whose record,” he
says, “for daring and bool courage in the
performance of bis'duty, is not-surpassed
by that of any other in the service.”

The apathetic condition of the Stock Market noted
for some time past still continues, but prices have tin.

closed very quiet, with 113% bid for the Coupon Sixes,
’81; 114% for the old Five-Twenties; no% for. the ’64S;
105% @166% for the Jane Seven-Thirties, and 106@105%
for the February do. State and City Loans were un
changed, with small transactions in the latter at 101®
■ioi% for the new. and 87% for the oldlssues. Reading
Railroad was very quiet, and offered at 58. Catawissa
; BaUroad Preferred sold at 30£@36%-decllae of %. 129
was bid for Camden and Amboy Railroad; 67% for
Pennsylvania Railroad; 57% for Mine Hill Railroad;
39% for North Pennsylvania Railroad, and 82% for
.Philadelphia.and Erie Railroad. Canal stocks were
dnllat yesterday’s quotations. Bankaharea were not
offered to any extent, and as all these Instltutims are
doing a lucrative and safo. business, they are mostly
held for pennanent investment. In Oil stocks the
only sale was of ocean, at 5%. Passenger Railway
securities were doll. 15% was the best bid for Heston

There Is no inquiry for Flour fbr shipment, bat the
home consumers are purchasing to a lair extent at
very full rates. Sales of 2 "00 barrels, chiefly North
west extra femily at |l2 50@|13 75 p barrel. Including
150 barrels Ohio do. do• at (15, small lots of extra at
(9@12, and superfine at (7 75 to (9. Bye Floor Is held
firmly and fnrtt er sales of 100 barrels were reported at
|7 50, In Corn Meal nothing doing to fix pilces.
The receipts of Wheat continue trilling and It Is held
stiffly at yesterday’s figures. Smallsales ofeommon
and good Penna. Bed at !3@3 15, and Southern at
(3 20@3 2S. White ranges from (3 25®3 45; Rye
is steady at (1 40 pibusbel. Corn continues to come
in slowly and meets a steady demand. Sales
of 4.000 bushels of yellow at (120, and mixed
Western at gl 19. Oats areless active, and cannot be
quoted over 63 cents afloat; i,2uo bnshels sold at this
figure. In Barley and Malt no further rates hare
come under our notice.

Grant and Sherman were in conference

The Case ol the Baltimore Commissioners.
Annapolis,. Oct, 26, 1866.—The investiga
tion of the charges against the Police Com
missioners commenced at 11 o’clock. A large
number of witnesses were present. The
counsel of the Commissioners appeared and
announced that they came to participate in
the cross-examination,but did not withdraw
their plea against the jurisdiction of the
Governor to pass final judgment. Mr.
Schley, for the petitioners, objected to the
Commissioner’s counsel participating in
the. investigation unless they withdraw
their plea against the jurisdiction of the
Governor. The counsel are now arguing
that point. 1
From Norfolk, Va.
Nobfolk, Oct. 26.—The stem portion of
the wrecked schooner Belle Bernard, of
Philadelphia, recently drifted ashore on
Body Island beach, with a portion of her
rigging and sails attached, and another por
tion at Hog’s Head, N. C. The .bodies of a
white and colored man were washed ashore,
and buried by the natives.
The Qnebee Sufferers.
Quebec, Oct. 26.— The subscriptions in
aid of the sufferers by the fire are progress
ing favorably. Two thousand dollars were
received from the Ney York Stock Ex
change yesterday, and the citizens are much
pleased with the generous gift
Boston is about forwarding a large dona
tion of clothing.
The weather here is very cold.

Charged with Perjury.— Pat Lanegan
and Robert Hodges were arraigned before
Alderman Beitler, yesterday, qpon the
charge of perjury. The complainant was
Llent. John G. Loveaire, of the Ninth Dis
trict Police. It appears that two or three
Weeks ago the accused were arrested for
drunkenness, and as is A usual with prison
ers, their valuables were taken from-them
and retained until they got sober, A day
or two after the affair Lieut. Loveaire and
three of his officers were arrested and
charged with the larceny of $lOO belonging
to Gd 8e men. It was sworn-positively that
Lieut Loveaire was behind the and
received the money. He showed conclu
sively that he was in bed at the time he was
alleged to have taken the money, and the
charge was dismissed by Alderman Harley.
Then Lieut. Loveaire entered suit, against
Lanegan and Hodges. They were held in
$1,500 bail for their appearance at Court.
COURTS.
Oyer and Terminer— Judges Allison,
and Peirce.—Gilbert Weitman was put on
trial this morning charged with caasing the
death of Daniel Ringler. The defendant and
deceased were neighbors in St. John street,
near Poplar, andon Sunday afternoon, Au
gUat J2th last, got into a quarrel at Ringler’s
door. Weitman made a remark about ob
taining a second wife, and Ringler objected
to the language being used in tha presence
of his daughter. Weitman retorted' that
Ringler was a fool if be considered that he
had been insulting. This led to a retort,and
Ringler proposed to fight. The parties en
gaged in a scuffle,and both fell to the ground
heavily, Weitman on top with his knees on
Ringler’s stomach. The men were sepa
rated, and Ringler, who was in ill-health,
was found to be injured. He died in two
days, and a postmortem examination dis
closed the fact that his bowels had been rup
tured. The case is on trial.
