Martinez. -Shis victory literally placed Sal
tillo in the hands-of the- Imperialistsrwho
■were daily expected in Monterey.
A long despatch Is said, to have been re
cently, reoeived from Napoleon, which had
the effect of halting some French troops
-about embarkingyand others were differed
to prepare far active service.- Confidence in!
Canales’ Ability to -hold Matamoras' is in
creasing. His force is said to be fifteen
hundred strong, most.of whom were boys.
It is reported on good authority that Juarez
had directed-the arrest of CanalesandHina
josa, and their trial by court-martial. It is
reported that he has; also.ordered the arrest
of Carvajal, for granting such terms to
•Mejiaandthepeopleof Matamoras. Nothing

Havana, Oct. 20.—Advices from Vera
Cruz to October 13th, and Mexico to October.
-45th are received. The situation of the Em
pire is daily growing -worse.' It; has lat
terly lost Guaymas, Hermosello, Urea Sla
ner, Zongpllca andotber places of less im
portance.' The Era Nouvette announces
that on the 6th an important conference
took place at the. palace at Chepultepec,
-upon the most expeditious means to pbtain
.funds for the Treasury, and a committee
was appointed to draw up a report, which
was all that was accomplished.
The Estafette says: ,A Council of-Minis
ters met on the 6th, at which Maximilian
presided. Questions of .the gravest impor
tance were submitted to the Council. It
was rumored that Larrainzan, Minister of
the Treasury, was to be removed. A .con
voy, with §3,000,000 in treasure, left on the

- Letters from Tampico assert that the
■' Liberals have formally taken, possession of
the lands of Manuel Onofre Parados, and
"were selling the cattle' at §B2 >per head, and
yokes of oxen at §B5, and offering the lands
for sale at analagous prices, and for the lat
ter object had sent agents to the United
States soliciting purobasers. Tulancingo
was being put into a.state of defence. Vin
cente Martinez and several of his men were
■arrested in the vicinity of Tlalpamon an
the Btb, by the order of General Oparon,
and were shot the same day.
The Liberal chief at Adam, Antonio
Perez, had discovered a concealed store of
three hundred muskets, and had raised and
• equipped two hundred men.
A communication had been in circulation,
says La Patrida , directed by the represen
tations of Marshal O. Roberts, of New York,
and Bon Ramon Clarke, of the Somorana
Company,'to the Minister of Public Works,
setting forth, among other things, that-a
sew impulse was about to be given to the
labors of the inter-oceanic-road at Tehuan
tepec, in order to finishtbem before April,
1869, and that the company had effected pe
• cuniary arrangements with Marshal O. Ro
berts, and in consequence of this arrange
ment, and for the better 'service of the un
dertaking, the residence, of the directing
hoard had been ahanged from New Orleans
to New York, changing, the Same to'the
Louisiana Steamship ana Railroad Compa
ny of Tehuantepec; but as the consent of the
Lmperor was necessary, J. P. O’Sullivan,
Attorney for Mr. Roberts, had arrived at the
capital in order to obtain it.
The Belgian officers whose term of service
was up, had left for Europe. On the 12th,
about 900 soldiers of different French corps
d’armee, arrived at Vera Cruz. The 81st
- corps was also expected from the interior.
This body would be the first to return to
. Prance.
The yellow and typhoid fevers, with chills
and ague, were raging at Cordova, and
caused such a panic- that many families had
emigrated.
In Yucatan the war'between the castes
■still continues, and from what may be
gathered from the meagre reports, the In
dians have thus far obtained the advantage.
.At the captnre of Ures by the Liberals, the
Imperial Tranberg was oalled. It is said
this Government has purchased of the
United States two monitors, at an expense
of §2,000,000, and &b the Government has no
available funds, two wealthy merchants of
this city have become- security for the i
amount.
New York, Oct,2l.—The Heralds Mata
xnores correspondent, of the 19 th, states that
correspondence in reference to the rights of
American citizens has Men going on for
some days past between the commanders on
the respective shores of the Rio Grande, and
has terminated in an amicable adjustment
- of all questions.
It is not known that any Commissioner
of Ortega has arrived here from New York,
though one is expected.
Cortinas has announced, in an official
communication to Colonel Sedgwick, that
fhe should attack Canales in accordance
with orders from the supreme Government,
Both parties are making energetic prepara-:
tions for the coming conflict.
Business is almost entirely suspended
there; the gunboat Chenoco is still in the
hands of the United' States authorities.
-Canales, Cortinas and Escobedo have asked
for her. Colonel Sedgwick responded that
lie would await -the decision of superior
authority. Escobedo is still in Monterey.'
In a communication received at Browns
ville, dated October 6th, he writes:—“Gene
ral Tevine.has marched to the interior with
-4,000 troops; that the troops of Victoria and
Tampico are in accord with "him, and will'
-act in conjunction with him in his opera
tions.”
Information has just been received here
-that General Tapia; with 800 men, is escort
ing a conducts with §BOO,OOO from Monterey
to Mier. The steamer Terry Galvin has
gone up the river to bring the money down,
Upon his arrival Tapia will immediately
proceed to this city, drive ont Canales and
assume the governorship by virtue of his
commission from Juarez. He will doubt
less act in conjunction with Cortinas.

'They have been pursued by companies of
rancheros and United States colored troops,
and five of the thieves have been killed.
