MAY SONNETS. HardeLe hi. heart that loveth nought In , May, when all this mirth 1s wrought. Chaucer. 'The queen of all the months ismith us now, 'Stepping through woods and foilage-ban nered Over theyegal purple of hare-bells, With a right royal step, and crowned brow? And litalten-heided ells, that gather flowers, Sustain her rich robe'd flower -broidered train, 'Unconscious of her presence in the lane, Where dandelions serve to tell their hours; And mirth of holiday gladness comes "with her, Nature's fair pageant, and divine array; 7lutter ofwreathing leaves, like garments Whenpomp of grand processions is astir, For mirth of olden times cames back with May, - Whereto all meadow-eights do minister. Old Chaucer's daisy opes its golden eye To see more meadow-gold among the grass, 'Where happy trine 'mid tufts of amber ass And crud out fragrance wheresoe'er they lie; For everywhere 'mid lush luxuriant green, Crowns the effulgence of the lavish May; Cowslips and dandelions bright as day, And radiant as the halo tot their queen. May's yellow buttercup, eagerly seen, Like treasures found not under every sky, The merry milkmaid's sweetheart doth esy, And toper raised chin holds its tell-tale sheen. A. merry month this month hath ever been, And ever brimful of glad melody. The odorous air made up of meadow smells, Is bubbling with sweet sound of blended song; A hundred larks into the heavens throng, A thousand wild bees hum their drowsy spells Over fair ilowers, which droop their charmed bells, And unaware yield up their honey wealth. _Music is bonne of simple-life and health, Wherever life this merry May time dwells. The olden miniatreisy of breeze and stream ProclaimAth still the merry rein of May, Blending with those sweet vo es, heard always, 'Thepoets who interpret nature's dream, And to all times in dulcet numbers say, For love and mirth, May bears the palm supreme. ..n Aquatic Feat by "Pap Price" and Other Rebels. [From a City of Mexico letter.] During the wet season the rain pours down with a suddenness and violence un known elsewhere, in a few hours swelling the smallest rills into wide rivers, render ing them impassable for the time. The -streets of the city having very little drain age, soon overflow, much to the discom flture of pedestrians. Last season, as Gen. Price, Governor Harris, and several other Confederate officers were dining at a restau rant in this city, the rain suddenly began to fall. The dinner party made themselves quite merry over the matter, expecting the shower soon to pass over; but hours passed and the rain continued to fall without in termission. Presently the sidewalk was overflowed and the water found its way into the restaurant, where it continued to _rise. Chairs and tables were at once appropriated to a new use. In one orner • was seen the stalwart form of "Pap - Price," mounted, upon a little round table, while his vis-a-vis was Gover nor Harris, carefully balancing himself upon the back of a decidedly rickety chair, and the rest of the .Confeds were disposed of to the best advantageupon other articles of furniture. Here they remained, cogitating upon the fallen fortunes of the. Confederacy, ,the power of Uncle Sam, and the instability Of the Mexican climate, until the storm sub sided. How to get to their hotel was the next question. There were no canoes to be had, and carriages would not venture out in such times. At length the General set tled the knotty point by taking off his boots and divesting himself of his nether gar ments; his example was followed by his comrades, and, carefully rolling up their boots and clothing, the party sallied forth, "Old Pap" taking the lead. Such a pro cessionwas never before seen in the streets of Mexico, and the costume of the party would hardly have been considered a /a spode, in New York; however they had dry breeces to wear by this aquatic feat. Tames TO THINK OF.—The number of languages spoken is 3,064. The number of men is about equal to the number of women. The average of human life is 33 years. One quarter die before the age of 7. One-half before the age of 17. To every 1,000 persons, one only reaches 100 years. To every 100, only 9 reach 65 years; and not more than 1 in .500 reaches the age of 80 years. There are on earth 1,000,000,000 of •Inhabitants. Of these, 33,333,333 die every- year; 7,780 every hour, and 60 every minute—or 1 for every second. These losses are about balanced by an equal number of births. The married are longer lived than the -eingle: and above all, those who observe a sober and industrious conduct. Tall men live longer than short ones. Women have more chances of life previous to the age of Fifty years than men, but fewer after. The ammber of marriages is in proportion of 75 to 100. Marriages are more frequent after the equinoxes—that is, during the mouths of June and December. Those born in spring are generally m ore robust than others. Births and ,deaths are more frequent by night thdn-by. day. Number of men capable of bearing arms is calculated at one-fourth of the population. SINGULAR OILCUHSTANCE.—A very sing ular circumstance occurred in reference to the death of Mi. J. Price, which occurred a few days ago, near Cockeysville, from an *ccident on the' Northern Central Railroad. His horse was run over by the cars and killed, and himself thrown violently on the cow-catcher, from which u after the train Qtopped, the bodY'was removed to a depot -of the Company, lor dead, placed in a room for safe-keeping, and left lying on the floor. Some time during 'the night the supposed -corpse resuscitated and _moved to another part of - the room, where it was found, life -extinct, the following morning, sitting on a -chair, head leaning against the wall.
