The Fenians are on the war path; Col. O'Neill, of Nashville, with six hundred sons of Ireland, and a train of nine army wagons, has seized an old redoubt at the mouth of the Niagara river, and raised the banner of revolt in Canada; horses have been seized, and a Canadian official has been despoiled of sixty dol lars in gold. The "bould soldier boys" who run with the Sweeny machine have committed these acts of war; but with a degree of martial financial honor that would have done credit to a Cade, a Wellington or a Sherman, they have scorned to appropriate private pro perty to their own uses without full coMpensation to the owners. The im mortal Jack Cade hung one of his fol.. lowers at Tyburn for despoiling a Lon don burgher of his goods. Wellington would not allow his men to appropriate even an orange in his famous Peninsular campaign without its equivalent being tendered in British' gold, and Sherman paid honest Yankee greenbacks for the chickens and' green corn that were consumed by his troops in the .cele ,ibrated march through Georgia and the Carolinas. Colonel O'Neill has started bnsinessupon themme correct principles ..and he is imitating the illustrioasexam pies noted above by paying Canadian poniei aud B'tiC-nose fodder with bonds of the Irish Republic, convertible into current funds at the convenience of the 'drawer. The Colonel has also followed the example of Cresar and`of Cortez, not Xactlybyburninghis ships afterlanding PAds gallant "six hundred" upon, hostile shores, but by turning adrift his:trans port fleet of canal boats and steam tugs, Whether he-will take up aline of march into tk9 bowel's of the-'laud; or iritiench 400 2bo 0 00 400 14 00 20 00 RENNETT & 00., TOWER TrATiry 518 MAR KET STREET. him to neglect even his own political household in order to feed his enemies, and to strip his own children to clothe his enemies. A marked instance of Mr. Seward's benevolence has recently come to light which deserves special notice. Our readers will remember Major A. R. Calhoun, whose eloquent speeches in the last Presidential campaign contribiited so largely to the success of the cause in Pennsylvania. This gallant officer served for nearly four years, and until his health was entirely broken down by wounds, sickness and long imprison ment. He carries the marks of seven honorable wounds, and the re cord of ten long months of languishing in the prison pens of the South. In the hope of restoring his shattered health, this brave and accom plished young officer applied to the State Department for some appointment abroad, where a more favorable climate might re-establish his strength. Hisap plication was backed by warm recom mendations from a host of loyal soldiers and civilians from various parts of the country, and the President's order to the heads of departments to fill vacancies with honorably discharged soldiers gave every reason for hope that the application would be granted. The Consulate of Amoy, in China, was vacant and Mr. Seward promised it to Major Calhoun. But just here, the benevolent Secretary's solicitude for his "democratic and rebel friends" got the better of him, and he turned his back upon the young soldier and gave the place to a pet of Mr. Cowan, a certain Mr. Denby, who has never smelled gunpowder, nor seen a battle field, but who has enjoyed a fat office in the Navy Department at Washington. The secret of Mr. Seward's conduct in this affair is easily explained. He dis covered that Major Calhoun had re mained true to the principles which he so powerfully advocated in 1864 and would not desert them in favor of the Seward-Johnsmi policy. Whether. Mr. Seward expected to establisha National Johnson Union Club in Amoy or not,we do not know, but he would certainly have showei better diplomacy, at least, by banishing Major Calhoun and his principles to China, than to - leave him here to devote his remaining strength to the cause which Mr. Seward once professed to love so well. Thai e v e hear, of ' a gathering of the claps at St. Albans, Vermont, ready for a swoop upon the shores - Of Canada. At Elmira, too, the "boys in green" Jiad gathered in force, all ready to do or die, and so anxious, in fact, to.do &idle that they had got to fighting among them selves, and the first blood of the war that is to liberate Ireland by making a raid upon Canada, has been shed in the United t3tates. The business seems somewhat Hibernian in its progress and' developments thus far. While these grand military move ments are going forward, we hear of some details that are interesting. We learn, for instance, that the British regu lars are to be demolished with six shooters, while the Canadian volunteers are to be scattered with grape, an ar rangement that could be made satisfac tory all around, if the British Com mander-in-Chief would only be obliging enough to keep the regulars and militia separated in such convenient lots as to make the Fenian arrangement availa ble, and to prevent confusion among the ammunition boxes of the Sweenyites. We have treated this question of the invasion of Canada in a trifling manner because of its manifest absurdity. Were it, not for the mischief, that will grow out of it,the movement would only be calcu lated to excite laughter. As it is, the probabilities are that it will be attended with bloodshed, the serious destruction of property, the strengthening of the bonds of Ireland and the endanger ing of the amicable relations that - exist between England and the United States, There must also be much fear and appre hension felt among thepeople of Canada; but we do not count this circumstance among the evils of the raid that we should deplore. Canada sided notoriously and indecently with the rebels during our war, and its peo ple aided and abetted, in every possible way, the Southern scoundrels who had an asylum in the province, while they concocted steamboat burnings, the de struction of railway trains, bank robbe ries, hotel burnings, wholesale poison ing and the dissemination of infectious diseases. The curses have gone home to roost, and to make • the retribution more complete, the • invading Fenian, both officers and rank and file, are largely made up from among men who served in the Southern army daring the rebellion... We wish them much joy of the Unwelcome visit of their old friends and colleagues. a E. SEWARD'S HONESTY. In Mr. Seward's flippant opeech at Auburn he asked, with an airy assu rance worthy of Palmerston, "How could - Democrats and Rebels avoid being converted?" The country is be ginning to answer this question differ ently from the intention of the ques tioner. It is beginning to see that it will be quite impossible for the rebels long to withstand the overwhelming kindness of Mr. Seward.
