THE ADAMS EXPRESS ROBBERY. .New Developments---Details by the De tectives. The great robbery of the Adams Express -Company's car in January last is fresh in the public - mind. The recent trial of Tris tam and .Clark, at Bridgeport, resulted in, their sentence to the State Prison, since when the detectives have been busily at Work, with the most favorable conse oquences. The facts as developed and given by them in connection with arrests made last we4r., are as follows : The opginator of 'the entire scheme ap _Tears fo - he John Grady, a- brakesman on the New York and New Haven train, who ;was captured at Bridgeport, Conn., while :performing his usual duties, ou the charge -of robbing : a. passenger, for which he. was lodged in jail. The filets in connection With the great robbery having previously been knownto the Detectives, he was taken into -custodyort the lesser charge in, order to keep him safe:'-'Martin Allen, the engineer of the robbery, was arrested at No. 132 Carlton -avenue, next door to the house of Engine Company No. 9, near Myrtle avenne,Brook lyn on Saturday morning, at 5.30 o'clock. 'The Detectives having no legal authority to make the arrest, procured the aid of - Deputy Sheriff York, -of Kings County, to accompany them. The party consisted of three Detec tives, Deputy Sheriffs 'McGonigle and Moore, of New York, who watched - Allen's house daring the entire night until 5 o'clock in the morning. The officers observing that the occupants in the house were astir, called the servant girl to the basement door, and inquired for the accused. She denied he was within. and slammed the door in their face. It is suspected that the girl informed Allen of the state of affair, and he, without further delay started down stairs and hid himself in the basement. The detectives made an entrance into the house through one of the front parlor windows and rushed. up stairs in expectation of finding him, but failed. - Subsequently he ; rushed into the back yard, and being there confronted by two of the officers in pursuit, returned; and bolting the door, came out of the front basement door, where he met another officer who dermanded his surren der. Using some profane expressions, the prisoner bolted back into the house, and bolting the front door he again took refuge in the basement. The officers who had enr tered through the parlor window about this time came down stairs and secured him. The principal occupant of the house, on ascertaining the facts, and being con vinced that the warrant for the arrest of Allen was legitimate, acted in a very marked and- gentlemanly manner, in contrast with one or the brothers of the ac cused, also living on the premises. The prisoner, on being captured, walked along quietly with his captors, causing no atten tion whatever while passing through the streets to the ferry. Gilbert McLane, alias Gilly McGlory, a well known sneak thief, usually hanging around the corner of How ard and Crosby streets and neighborhood, was arrested in Howard street, near Broad way, at 8 o'clock cln Friday night. James Wella,a brother-in-law of Martin Allen, was arrested at 9 o'clock the same night on Broad way, near the St. Nicholas hotel, having just come oat of that place with two friends. He made no resistance whatever, bat walked quietly alOng. The New York Deputies from Sheriff Kelly's 'office are entitled to credit for their efficient aid. The Police of this city, it is understood, knew who the robbers were immediately after the facts of the robbery became known, but made very little or no effort to arrest them. The ac cused were taken to Bridgeport on Saturday and Sunday, and there brought before Judge Hall, of the Supreme Court, and committed in default of $B,OOO bail each. The proof against the accused is conclusive, and it is probable that they will be tried at the next term of the Criminal Court of Fairfield, Ct. —.Ar. Y. Times. • - _By _Telegraph, BRIDGEPORT, Conn., Ai ay 9.—Allen Wells, McGlan and Grady, the brakemen concern ed in the great robbery of the Adams Ex press Company, have been brought here on a requisition of the Governor and lodged in prison to await trial at the next term of axnirt. _ Fortress Monroe. FORTRESS MONROE, May Bth.—A Military Commission has been convened by order of Lieutenant General Grant, and is now in session at Norfolk, for the purpose of ascer taining andinvestigating the causes which led to the recent riot in that city during the negro procession celebrating the pagsage of the Civil Rights Bill. A number of wit nesses have already been examined, and it is presumed the evidence will be quite volu minous. The Commission met to-day and will prosecute without delay the various examinations of witnesses. The proceed ings will be conducted with closed doors, and the evidence will be submitted directly to Lieutenant General Grant. The following is his order under which the Commission • has assembled : HEADQUARTERS DEPARTMENT OF VIR ,GINIA, RICHMOND, April 28, 1866.—Special Order No. 9.1.—1 n obedience to instructions from Lieutenant-General Grant, command ing the armies of the United States, a Board of Officers is hereby ordered to convene at Norfolk, Virginia, on Monday, the 30th day -of April, 1866; or as soon thereafter as prac ticable,-who -will investigate the cause and progress of the recent riot in that place, and -all the facts connected therewith. FIRE Thr NEW YORK.-At 6.30 o'clock yes lerZlay afteinoon a fire broke out in one of ;the upper floors'of the five-story building, No. 198 Broadway. The flames gained good beadway, before the arrival of the firemen, but they went to work with so good a will - that the flames were checked before they bad'extended below the fourth floor. The third, fourth and fifth floors were occupied by Alfred Reynolds, dealer in hats and Loss by fire and water estimated at 111000. Probably insured. The second - floor is occupied by Denison & Co., manu facturers of cloth labels and tags. Loss on stock and fixtures by water about $3,000. The first floor is occupied by H.R. Hubbell, patent safe agent: Loss by water $l,OOO. ale basement is occupied by J. Beck & Stevens, barbers. Damage to fixtures $5OO. Insured. The building belongs to J. E. Andrew, and is damaged to the extent of .aboutls,oo(F. Covered by insurance.—N. Y. Times. STORM CLOUD.—The Richmond (Va.) Ea .ritzirer of May Bth says: "One of the heaviest and most remarkable storm-clouds which we have noticed, for -years passed over our , laity on Tuesday night. It was of inky blackness, circular in form, and seemed to revolve spirally upon an unseen axis, as it swept over the heavens from southeast to northwest. Its passage, was accompanied by a furious - wind andvivid and incessant lightning, but there was comparatively little thunder.- .An the cloud reached the zenith a furious hEdl-storm came up, which lasted nearly an hour. The wind prostrated seve ral fences, and tore off large branches from trees in. various portions of the city." Coal 011 ht the Southwest. Judge Swan, President of the Petroleum Conipany, showed us this morning a sped - matt of the coal oil found in the parish of Calcasieu, and burned it before us. It is very pure, _pure as any known, and we do not see why it should :not be, nor why it should not be found in Southern Louisiana in inexhaustible quantities. The extensive coal formations above in North Louisiana and Arkansas are ample guarantees of the 'presence t.f large q uanti ties - of the purest oil below. It is, indeed, found all', through that country from Cal casieu to the waters.' of the Ouachita, whence we hive recently seen'very hand some specimens. The coal beds and oil wells of Arkansas and • Louisiana are, of course, geologibally related to each other here as in any other country ; but in their geographical and other relations they resembled the coal beds and oil wells of Southern Mexico most of all.. In the great '.State of Oajaca ere im mense beds of the finest coal as in the State of Arkansas; while, below on the low Isth mus of Tehuantepec, are not only wells, but open ponds or lakes of petroleum whence all the ships of the world can be freighted, and all the people thereof supplied. It is not now, indeed, the question whether pe troleum can, in sufficient quantities, be found ; the practical questions are, its cheap transportation to market, and, preparation use. And therefore itleffnost gratifying to know that we have inexhaustible wells of coal oil so near the great city of New Orleans, where it can be prepared for use, and; by the facilities of navigation in the Mississippi Valley, transported, in its re fined and purified state, direct to a large portion of the civilized world.—N. 0. Pic ayune. A MARYLA.ND GIPSY STORY.—The New town (Md.) Record has an account of an adroit transaction : "Two Gipsies, answer ing to the names of William and Mary Wallace, encamped about seven miles above Drummondtown, succeeded in per suading a Mr. Edward Wright,.a merchant of the place, that if he - would allow them to put any amount of his money in his trunk, the key and trunk both to be in his (01r. Wright's) keeping, after it should remain a number of days undisturbed the amount would be doubled, evidencing their faith in their prophecy and in him, by putting $ 300 of their own money with $5,000 of his, most of which was borrowed, which done on the sth instant. About nine days after this a gentleman from whom Mr. Wright had borrowed several hundred dol lars called upon him for the amount. He (Mr. Wright) not being able to raise this without taking it from the amount in his trunk, went to it for that purpose, and found to his astonishment that no money was there, and upon inquiry learned that the Gipsies and money had gone together. He found in the trunk, however, a package similar to the bundle- of money which he had supposed was placed there, and also a bundle of lead corresponding with a pack age containing three hundred dollars in gold, which he thought had also been placed in the trunk. "We learn also that other parties, who do not wish their names known, lost two or three thousand dollars additional by the same transactions. It may be stated that they had before this performed some won derful freaks of sleight-of-hand. Mr. Wright telegraphed immediately, offering $l,OOO reward for the apprehension and re covery of the money, which he has now in creased to two thousand. William Wallace is ofmedium size, with dark hair and whis kers. His wife Mary is a large woman with no complexion and with brown hair." A WHALE IN THE CHEsAPßkze.—The schooner Clara Coward, Captain George White, of Tyaakin, Somerset county, en countered a whale off Barren Island, in the Cbeseapeake bay, on Monday, April 23d. The captain wrusat the wheel about sunrise, when :he whale was first discovered, and was puzzled for a time to make out the character of the long black mass that rose from the water about 150. yards from the schooner. Hewes soon convinced that it was a whale, and called all hands, to en deavor to get out of his reach as soon as possible. He made in for shore, but the whale still followed, until the captain find ing he medited no harm, put out into the deep water again, when the whale left and ran up the Bay, having followed the schooner over an hour.—Somerset Herald.
