Whatever is written by Dr. Pusey is pretty sure tobe marked , by - :great ability and a decided' character 'of Christian courtesy. However much his peculiar religious opinions may be objected to; no one can well refilie him the praise of unfailing urbanitY and kind consideration for the opposing convictions of his advaniarieis. "An Eirenicon" -is no exception to this rule. It is an answer to Archbishop Mtuming, the Catholic prelste of Westminster, and seeks to show that the English Church is a next of Christ's one .Holy 'Catholic_ Cimrch, -and " a:= means of . restoring • visible unity." • The. first point seems hardly to need. argatnent,. nor does it require any labored , proof,. save when a member of the Roman, Church is to •be dealt with. All the objections to this view urged by Dr. Manning, 'are most satisfac torily disposed of in'this volume. Dr. • Pa sey shows - ,theintinfrioleney of Dr:: Man mug's deinntn; and vindicates the • Euglish Church from all his charges. It is' f course impossible in :a brief notice to give the whole . argument., The reader will be sur prised and probably comdderahlyinstructed at Dr: Puiley!iable handling of the Articles and forniula.ries of the English Church. . He shows that she rejects - no truths, • holds no erroneous views on the number and nature of sacraments---rejects only con ceptions whibli hive crept into the Roman Ibith in the progress of ages, and lightly re gards the authority of General ., COuncils. _These and similar truths are sustained in the volume with a wealth of learning and exactness of logic truly admirable. The doctrines of the Roman church,on the other band, in regard to those points in which she differs from the English Church, are most 'indly but most clearly pointed out, and we hardly se& , kow a candid _mind can read the exposition without being convinced of the facts asserted. Still, we cannot indulge any lively hope that unity will be :restored to the universal Church by any amount of arguments or ex planation. The faith, as held by the great mass of christians of different communions, differs so much from the faith to be drawn from their formulas of faith, where exactly interPected, that the old ada'ge, "He that's convinced against his wili, will have the same opinion still," will, we fear, apply to the Christian Church, and keep its commu 31i0118 separated, till the good spirit of .God, filling all souls with outflow - Mg love, shall work out "all pride, prejudice andpassion " andmake men of one mind by : first making them of one heart. This book, however, will repay perusal, even if it fail to produce conviction. For sale by Ashmead & Evans. CITY Bl3]MMMif. CHARGED wrrxr. THE WALNVT.—The character of /ring LOUIS XL of France, the great opponent of Duke Charles the Bold, of Burgundy, and the patron of the executioner Tris tarn and the barber Oliver le Dein, has never had so able a - dramatic representative as Mr. Charles Kean. The readers of "Quentin Durward" and It irk's mag nificent life of Charles the Bold, could not but be fas cinated on seeing so grand an embodiment of the crafty monarch's qualities as that presented by Mr. B can last year at the Academy and last evening at the Walnut.,; The house was paczed from stage to roof with one of the moat Leshionable audiences which ever collected there, and, owing to the lateness of many of the arrivals a large proportion of th e spectators were unable to enjoy a very_ pleasant little comedietta in which Mr. and Mm . Walcott played most capitally. However, when the curtain rose on "Louis XL" the scene was most impressivethe hushed and expectant audience fairly held their breath, and during the entire evening the most profound attention was_ given to every word and movement of the drama. Mr. Kean never acted with more force and delicacy of genius, d we have never seen better support accorded to any "star" at this theatre. Mrs. Kean had but a slight part, during a sit gle scene, but it was graceibily per formed. Mr. Cathcart's Nemonrs was admirable, and ML--s Chapman's personation of the Dauphin was of a very felicitous quality. It was ingenuousness and grace to perfection. This evening Mr. and Mrs. Kean appear as Mr, and Mrs. Beverly in "The Gamester." and to morrow night for their farewell appearance they will give "The Stranger" and "The Wonder."
