Wrom Tex ati-.T b Pro,-. Expedition to NOolftrl3Y.' - - Nnw Onravar,s, Jan. 3. —Additional ac . counts from - Brownsville say that Genera Crawford has plenty of funds. Ills chief staff, Col A. F. Reed, is rapidly raisinsr, cruits in Brownsville, enlisting United States soldiers still in tile United State service, and promising them discharges so soon as' the necessary papers can be made out and forwarded. There has been no in ---terference with this proceeding by our au thorities as yet. Recruiting offices are opening in other parts of Texas. One of the recruiting otrs• cers informed the correspondent of the New Orleans Times that a force is to come from New York in addition to that, being raised on the Rio Grande. A camp is being es tablished below Brownsville with, sufficient supplies. • lt ia reported that Gen. Logan and GOD, Lew. Wallace are connected with -the expe dition which aims at Monterey. • Gen.' Mejia, is aware of Gen, Crawford's Movements. e NEW ORLBAYs, Jan. s.—The Brownsville correspondent of the Times, anger 'dates of the 30th of December, says: , -• "Gen. R.t•Clay Crawford has, arrived at :Brownsville with .the appointment, of General in' the Mexican and Republican 'army, and authority to recruit an Americas division for the Republican service,-under cowman_ _ - Gen ,Crawford 'established recruiting Offices at ,Brownsville.and other places:in TexaS, and the enlistments were already progresedriff rapidly. It is reported that Generals Lew. Wallace and Logan are' connected,' with the move.: ment; and they are soon expected to arrive irktravajal, the •farnotts . 'A:schooner, laden with arms and - immn- Adtion,.e.Onsigned to a purveyor at the head quarters of the Twenty-fifth United States Army Corps, went ashore at Bagdad, and was-seized by Imperialists. General Mena levied aqoan of $lO,OOO on :the merchants of Matamoras. The military railroads from Brashear are, completed to White Ranches, making the travel' from Brownsville to Brazos in four hours. Later news says that American families are leaving Matamoras and coming to the American side, fearing an attack. Liberal forces numbering about two thousand two hundred, are scattered along the river. Reneontre in the Virginia CapitoL RICHMOND, Jan. s.—An exchange of pis tol shots took place to-day at noon, in the hall of the Capitol, between Henry Rives Pollard, of the Examiner, and 'Nat. Tyler and William D. Coleman, of the Enquirer. Six shots were fired without damage, ex cept the knocking off of half of the tassel on the cane of the marble s t atne of Washington. The House of Delegates was in session at the time, and the occurrence produced a great excitement. The parties were ar .rested by the Sergeant -at-Arms, an d brought to the bar of the House. Pending a discus sion on a motion to refer the case to a com mittee, the House adjourned till to-morrow. The difficulty originated in an article in the Examiner, on the public printing to which the Enquirer replied by calling on the former to name the person referred to, or stand convicted of falsehood. The Ex aminer made no editorial reply. SialeofaWeisWrn SATIDUSKT ' Ohio, Jan. s.—The Sandusky, Dayton and Cincinnati Railroad was sold to-day by 0. Follett, ReCeiver, under order of the court, for $750,000, the minimum valuation, to J.P. Yelverton, of New York, and J. W. Pierce and Israel M. Spelman, of Boston, the purchasing trustees, under the plan of the bond and stockholders for the capitalization of the secarities. HORRIBLE TRA4ED7.—The Conneaut (Ohio) Reporter gives the particulars of a tragedy near Grand Rapids, Michigan. Ao cording to its account, N. H. Durfee, of Pierpont township, Ashtabula county, then a member of the 3d Ohio Battery, induced a young woman, of Beaver. Pa., to marry a soldier, named Belden, about two years since, for the sake of getting Os bounty. It is said that soon after the marriage Bel den was poisoned. Last October Mrs. Bell den and Durfee went to Michigan, takiffg with them the child of Mrs. Belden, eigh teen months old, and tioeompanied by Dur fee's brother. On arriving at 'Ada, Rent county, Michigan, Durfee procured a livery team and drove the woman and child into a secluded field, where he killed the woman, by nearly severing the head from the shoulders, and then fractured the skull of the child, which, however, managed to crawl off and was found by a farmer, who adopted it. ' The body was not discovered until November 28th, and it was several days afterwards before it was identified, and suspicion directed to the murderer. The sheriff of the county, after considerable effort, traced Durfee to Ashtabula county, but arrived too late, as the man had left, it is said. for England. The brether of Dur fee has been arrested as an accessory. SHOCKING DEATH Or SIT. CHILDREN.— Says the Madison (Wis.) Journal: Mr, Henry Drew, Assistant Superintendent of Public Property, has related to us the par ticulars of a case of hydrophobia at the village, of 'Waterloo, which surpasses in tragic interest almost any story of the kind Ave ever read. Some six or seven years ago a mad dog went through the village of Waterloo, Jefferson county, and bit a num ber of animals.- Among others, he snapped at the leg of a cow belonging to Mr. Bab cock. The animal was examined, but no mark was found, and it was supposed that it escaped being bitten. The animal was afterward sold to a man by the name of Garrison, who used her milk very freely, as did two of his children. Some of the neigh bors, including Mr. Drew's family, were also supplied with the milk of this cow. At different times during • the time since the cow was bitten, there has been inexpli cable and fatal sickness among those using her milk, and two children of Mr. Garri son, two of Mr. Drew, and two others have been attacked with spasms and died in agony. Mr. Garrison has also been at tacked at times with spasms. The mystery of this sickness was solved by the death, with every symptom of hydrophobia, a short time ago, of the cow so slightly bitten seven years ago, and in whose system mad ness has bees latent ever since. CAPACITY OF THE Earn CAN - AL.—The carrying capacity of the Erie Canal, with double locks, is equal to 8,000,000 tons the navigation year of seven months; that is, 4,000,000 tons each way. This would call for daily shipments at the points of de parture of 18,000 tons, say seventy boat loads of 250 . tons capacity. We heard - no complaint of the need of facilities for trans portation or the; lack of capacity in 1860, 1861 and 18t4, when the total movements on all the, canals of the State ranged from 4,800,000 to 4,500,000 tons, but in 1862 and . 1863, when there - wItE4 a large increase of ----eastern-bound .freight,- and the tonnage movement on all the canals was increased 10,5,500,000_ tons, and before the large class <if boats carrying from.2oo. to 250 tons came into use on the enlarged eanals, with a draft ,: 4 3f fiiet of water, there were some lookage " detentions; on the Erie 'at the single locks. And even then if f.the locks had been kept in goodworking..order, and 'well and dih gently attended, as, they could and should hava, bpen, there would not have been any delays or detentions, nor any complaints_ about the capacity of the Erie canal.—Report of the OWWI Auditor of New York.
