John Brougham. on Pni.lodelph4. t „qicj.voridon 43ra, of Dec. 17th, contains -the --folloWing pleasant letter--from -John Brougham: ; • • - • PRILADELAni..s., November 28th. One week in this reetangtdarcity of "brotherly love,” with what result, professionally, "A. • B.'s" natural and national diffidence really Prevents hfin from Chronicling.' Personally, 'l' am quite satisfied that you will , cull-from late newspapers some ; eulogistic, remarks to myself and a few others, , in:- dicative of, my progress in both Ways. 1' `Must Say, ittrwever, ` , .in acknowledgment of my , receptton here, that it 'transcended that of .New.:York." - , combined en thusiasm ofd ati east end audience, and the appreciation Of a west one',. Multiply both ' by two, , and you may obtain something ap- . proximating, to the 'result. ' ' • The city of Philadelphia is certainly generis. I wonder what your "typo" will make of that; but for fear he , should twilit it'into something .utterly unintelligible, I'll say that there is nothing like it in the world —at least that part of the world - ,that I halip seen, originally founded. and' 'niainlY in habited by Qiialiers.. It Partakes, to a great degree, of the Quakerly erenient. Toe in terminable -furlongs or streets are lined with,Quakerlyhouses, iall'of.the ' same uni 'form pattern, until the eye "aches frona;the, fatiguing 'monotony. :Quakerly trees , *re planted at equaldiatancesalongthe Quakerly • route; .Quakerly white shutters glisten on tliti'seber-cafored',QuitkerlY therers an aspect of Quakerly rigidity,;andsuperabati-. dant cletipliness, about :the ^entire of the • Quakerly vicinity. - 'lt Is - a •loYely sight tO, see every-moniing, , if-you-can only manage to escape - atseries Of , cortipilisory shower baths', the army of housemaids, with every variety of, hydraulic contrivance, deluging . - the fronts' of •the houses, mopping the im maculate.white shutters, and brooming, the red brickpavement, or, as they call it here, sidewalk, to the serious detriment of the in eautiouspedestian. ; , This r however,ls only the general charac ter of the , atreets which contain private residences: ,In the business pprtiens there is a, manifest -and. startling ,differenee; the contrast is. marvelous , to ;beheld., It is as though a sad-favored, gravely-dressed Quakqrly , gentleman had grown worldly, and arranged himself in all the varieties of gaudy-colored attire. Intensely submitted, pervaded by a busk,. happy looking crowd, everyplace covered with enticing announcements; multiMdious signs swinging from all available .points, gigantic letters on the roofs ,of the houses—my good friend Colonel Forney!s sign-board can be read easily , two miles off —banners waving, and flags flying, the lower part of the city is like a continual fair. In many instances the curious combination of announcements is amazingly suggestive of a London Pantomime, and the Britisher begins to wonder when master Harlequin will leap through one of them, or with a stroke of his potent bat change it into "Just popped in." There is one great advantage, sanitarily (please to let me have the "a" in that word, good friend typo), in the peculiar chess board plan of Philadelphia. 'The streets are all of a reasonable width, between which ' there are lesser alley ways leading to the back entrances of the houses. In these by ways the refuse of each house is collected, and carted away every morning, thereby preventing the nauseous array of old bar rels, tubs, and baskets, filled with every de scription of abomination in the way of coal dust, old bones, vegetable matter, ferment - l ing putridity, and fever-breeding feculence. s. The principal hotel here, "the Conti mental, is an architectural miracle. There are many other famous houses, but that is the "Aaron's rOd" of caravansaries. It contains ever so many apartments. I' in not going to bother you with any guide-book .statistics. I only mention that same Tra veler's Palace, for the simple reason that I found some old friends there; amongst them Mr. and Mrs. Barney Williams, when I had. the privilegeAf a peep at "that baby," and I am able say,frOm actual observation, that the highest amount of even parental appraise ment could , not overvalue that breathing jeweL I also saw there as good a boy as ever carried'a human heart within his waist coat, John Risley, son of the "Professor," who captivated Europe many years ago with the most elegant and classic gymnastic evolutions ever witnessed. The two hand some boys, who were then the delight of the elite, have grown into fine, broad-shouldered men with sinews of iron wire and nerves of steel, consequent upon 'that early training. Our friend Barney, who remembers with pleasurable pride his visit to the "ould eoun , try," talks of going over .again in the fall, 4 and probablY take `a new drama by d. 13. * - * g I have only time to say that the dramatic profession is , prospering .here. The are four regular theatres and two circuses in full blast at the present' time. At Mrs. John Drew's Arch street, the Williamses have just concluded a greatly successful engage ment. Madame Celeste commences there to-night in Geeen Bushes. At the Chestnut Miss Lucille' Western is filling the house nightly in a highly spiced but exceedingly popular melodrama called ' The Child Btealer. The American rejoices in a Men kenian spectacle entitled The Demon Bider, and the Walnut street is the pleasant ai d profitable arena for the eccentricities of J. B. News From. the Monitor Monadnock. The following letter has been received at the State Department : UNITED STATES CONSULATE, PARAMA- Iuso, December 4 1865.—Sir: I have the honor to inform you. that I received a letter from Mr. Leland,'Consul pro tem. at Cay enne,,,this'incirning, 'wherein he states that the United States steamers Vanderbilt, Tus carora arid_Monadnoc,k, under Commodore Rogers, arrived. atlhat port on the27th and took in four, hundred tons of coal, and left on their ~waY to thd Pacific on. the 30th. The great event of emancipation was cele brated at noon.. by the ringing of church bells and firing of salutes on Boston Corn rnon also, .at Cambridge, Lexington, Dor chester; Charlestown, and other localities. The population were especially jubilant, indulging in military parades and a great meeting in Tremont Temple in the evening, where several distinguished gentlemen made patriotic speeches. Two hundred policemen paraded to-day, with Gilmore's band, making an imposing appearance. The snow and slush, however, rendered the streets execrable for marching. BOSTON, Jan. I.—Lewis F. Bledsoe; a highly respectable merchant of Staunton, Va., in possession of a large sum of money, came to Baltimore on the 13th instant, to purchase goods. He took a room at the Maltby House, registeredhimself on that day, since which time nothing further has been seenor heard of him. Upon an examination of his room it was ascertained that the bed had not been occupied, and his baggage was undisturbed. His partner, Mr. C. B. Wood, is now in search of him.
