Nashville and Knoxville are connected by rail

fearful of ah 'attack, and cannot spar© reinforce
ments for Polk.
The Mobile Hews says that Polk has been shame
fully outgeneraled by Sherman, who had advanced
beyond Meridian, between the Bishop and Montgo
mery: and the Marietta Rebel has rumors of a hard
ight in Mississippi, on the 13th inst.
. A tide of veteran volunteers is being sent to the
rtumt; every car on the Nashville and Chattanooga
Railroad being wanted for their transportation

V FBOM WASHIKGTON.
Washington, Feb. 19. The House Military
Committee had under consideration to-day the
joint resolution -which passed the Senate yesterday,
allowing persons to be transferred from the mili
tary to the naval service. The Committee in
structed the Chairman to report against it, for the
reason' that provision is made for the transfer in
the Enrollment bill.
- The Committee authorized Mr. Garfield to amend
* the Senate resolution cf thanks to Gen. Thomas, by

They also passed a resolution recommending the

ce men to examine and report on a machine
which, it is claimed, can successfully navigate
'the air, and tbereby be of great service in making

The Amendatory Enrollment Bill, as it to-day
passed both Houses of Congress and now awaits

Loxdo*, Feb. 4.—The Austrians attacked the
Danes at Bistorefon the 3d inetaut. This town is
one mile south of Schleswig. The Danish trooDs
their position in splendid style. Subsequently an
attack was to be made on the whole Danish line in
front and flank, from Missunde to Acel. <Thls at

It is asserted that England has offered to guar
antee all that Austria and Prussia hare demanded
of Denmark.
Lokdok, Feb. 4.—The Times has the following
