Deatn of Alexia Crane.
The death or Mr. A. Crane, which took
plaee at bis residence in this place, at 4 1-4
o'clock yesterday afternoon, was not an un
expected event, ai be bad been in very bad
state for some days previous to bis demise,
jot has cast gloom of sadness over a large
portion ot our community, among whom be
bad long been known as an bonest and up
right citizen, and one whose loss will be se
verely felt nod long mourn, il liy large cir
cle of friends and acquaintances. Mr. C.
was born in Richmond, Chittenden county,
Vermont, in the mootb or April, 1820, and
at the time of bis death was aged 49 years
and 7 months. At an early age he moved
into New York State and settled at Fulton,
at which place be resided for many years,
and where be was married. He came to
the oil region in the year I860, and imme
diately went into business as an oil produ
cer, being largely interested iu the develop
ment of the oil territory in this vicinity.
For tbe past few years be bad been engaged
in the business of refining oil, under the
firm name oi Crane, Tbacker & Co., one of
tbe oldest Arms in this section. He loaves
a wife and four children, also a sister, Mrs.
M. L. Bates, to mourn his death.
His remaius will be taken to Fulton, N.
Y., where be will be buried with Masooio
honors.
Funeral services will be held at tbe late
residence of the deceased at 10 a. m , to
morrow forenoon, and tbe remains Will be
taken away on tbe 11 o'clock train.
New Dbdo Store. Griffith Bros, will
open their new drug store, opposite the
Opera House, Washington street, to-day.
They bave laid in a large stood of drugs,
medicines, toilet articles, perfumeries,; &o.
These gentlemen are just starting in bus!"
nets and should receive a liberal share o'
the pnbllc patronage.
Tbe Niagara Farm is steadily improving
in production. On the 31st day of October
tbe production of tbe farm was 292 barrels,
and onjtue 30 of Nov., (Yesterday) the pro
duction was 400 barrels. Tbe Superintend
ent of this Farm, ullages the tanks evory
day at noon and consequently tbe produc
tion is accurately and satisfactorily known.
We learn a new well was struck on Fri
day las: the Miller Farm, opposite Fos
ter Station, on the Allegheny Valley R. R.,
and is dulng 25 barrels per diem. Wm.
Roth, and a Mr. Miller, or Tarr Farm, are
sole proprietors.
The TituBvllle Herald comes to us this
morning in a bran new dress.. It presents a
line appearance. We are glad to witness
our neighbor's prosperity and hope it may
continue.
Almoht a Fire. This morning about
11 o'clock as a couple of tbe neighbors were
passing the residence of Mr. Cook, In Wild

Eatly last Summer a partially insane man
left Cairo, taking with him a son. seven
years old, and nothing was heard of them
tilt a few days since, when news of his ar
rest as an Insane person Was received from
Sacramento. He was ragged and travel
worn and the little iy was in a condition
equally pitiable. The whole distance from
Cairo to California has been made by them
on foot. They bad traveled steadily, beg
ging food on the way, sometimes . failing
and thirsting for days, but continuing their
j mmoy the while, as it' the route ubouuded
in extravagant plenty. The ''Professor,'1
inspired by tbe insane Idea that California
was indeed a land of gold, exerted a super
human (strength, carrying the boy in bis
arms for hours after thu lad's wear leg: hud
refused to support blm further. Night and
day, week after week, tbe journey was pur
sued widened into distance or more than
two thousand miles, closing the last day
with a walk of over thirty miles.
Sunday last began the ecclesiastical year
as January 1st begins thu civil year. All
of our Episcopal churches will duly notice
this commencement by appropriate services,
anthems, psalms and collects. The sublime
liturgy of tho church uses its grandest col
lect in Ihe s uson as follows: Almighty
God, give us grace that we may cast away
tbe works of darkness, uow in tbe time of
this mortal life, in which Thy Son Jesus
Christ came to visit us in great humility,''
fce. Now for six mouths to come is tbe
most interesting and solemn portion of the
Christian year, aud the services at all
these churches will be of tbe most interest
ing character. Soon will came Christmas
with its eucces-don of holidays, to be fol
lowed by lent, Guod Friday, Easter, Ascen
sion, aud Whit Sunday, some months
hence.
Tho original plan of Atlantic coast lights
will be carried out during the coming year.
The light-houses destroyed on the Southern
coast during the rebellion are being rebuilt,
aad new lights projected on tbe tlungereus
coasts between Capes Henry and Hatteras
and on Alligator Reef in the Florida pass.
In the course of a year, the aids to naviga
tion will be greater than at any preceding
period.
They bave another sensation In Chicago-
the ease ot a young man named Melbourne
Stuart Hale in a stale of suspended anima
tion for fourteen days, and clillaiu that

J liy Gould bus resigned the receivership
of tbe Atlantio and Great Western Railway,
and Judge Hitchcock has been appointed in

thousand dollars. This ends tbe trouble
until next court. Tbo answers in petition
for foreclosure and sale aro to be filed Jan
uary 10tl, and tbe case will be ready for
bearing January 24tb.
Advices from tho Interior of Cuba are that
hunger and misery prevails to an alarming
extent. Tbe columns under Col. Hidalgo
lately round at a but in tho vicinity of Pal
ma Soriano, containing tbe lifeless bodies
or eight persons who had died of starva
tion.
A terrible affray occurred in Johnson coun
ty, Arkansas, last week. A planter named
Johnson bad an altercation with three
bands in a cotton field, who attacked bim
wilb knives. Johnson drew a knife to de
fend himself, killing two or them instantly,
aud mortally wounding the third. Jobn-
aon received more than twenty wounds,
but will recover. He bears tbe reputation
Of a good, quiet citizen.
' The Ohio river bridge at Louisville w i 1 1
be completed December 15th. The spall
over Iudiaoa channel was swung on its
bearings Saturday morning. ' It is 400 feel
long, and is the largest erected in America.
Tbo temporary superstructure will now be
removed, and' in five days tbe channel will
be passable for boats. The clearances un
der tbe bridge above thu low water lino
ninety-six and a half feet, and above high
water forty-five and a half.

Deer hunting in Clarion County is very
profitable just now. On Thn:s lay of last
week, Dr. Strattnn. of Strattanville, r-hot
three, ono of llion a fawn, without moving
from the spot where 1:6 delivered the first
shot. On the 19th Inst. Mr. Isaac F nse
temaker, of Clarion, shot a buck, in Paint
lown.-ship, which weighed, when dressed,
210 pounds, which ills said to be one of
tho largest ever killed in that section.
Lyman Allen, an old man, wus feiind
dead in bis bed at Taylor's hotel, Jersey
cit.", Thnisday morning. Ho was a merchant,

years in a miserly manner. lie took but one
meal daily, ami his wardrobe at bis death
