A Champion' love Tom Allen's
Surrender.
Tom Allen, the champion pugilist of the
United States, was to have msde bis appear,
ance in this city yesterday, fcavlng reached
i,Vljicj(es on bis way here from St. Louis.
He-did not come here, however, lie return
ed to St. Louis instead, in response to a tel
egram. It is probable that by the time this
reaches our ronders Mr. Allen will have sur
rendered the belt, beaten in one round by a
young woman, his early love, who ran away
from borne to share his honors. When Al
len came to this country two years since,
she attempted to come out with him, but
was prevented bf her parents. Not long
since, however, her family came over and
settled In Now York State. Tbe young lady
immediately commenced a correspondence
with A"en, which was kept up until bis re
cent with McCoole. Thnt fight settled
th business, not otily with Mike, but with
(be English girl. She could no longer re.
sist tbe pleadiogs of her old lover, now sud
denly become famous the country over. So
sbe left her parents and borne between two
days met Tom at Viocennos, and proceeded
with him to St. Louis, in search ol a church
and a minister of the gospel. Cincinnati

dred and twenty days. Viewers have been
appointed by tbe Court to assess damages
for tbe right of way."
Sheriff Herpst informs us that there are
now but thirteen phrsons confined in tbo
county jail. This we are sure is not the
fault of tbe prosecuting officers who have
been a terror to evil doers aud have made
the way of the transgressor very bard in
Venango. The certainty of punisbm ent by
our courts is bearing good fruit.
The Petroleum Gaslight is tbe title of
a neat little paper just staried in Pleasant

a receipt for subscription equivalent to a
share in the concern and says:
" When 2,000 shares have been sold the
largest number of subscribers that can bo

some manner of disposing of tbe office.'
Subscription price $1.25 per annum.
