RELIGIOIIB INTELLIGENCr 'We bnefl? alluded some days since to a statement heralded about in the realmns of newepaperdom, that the eighteenth hundredth a nniversary of the martyrdom of St. Peter, was to be celebrated, with all. the pomp and ceremony of the Roman Catholic Church, during the year 1860. It is said for years rumors have been afloat that the Pope intended to convene at Rome a meeting of all the Cathohc bishops of the world In order to fcrtily himself by their consent in his efforts for saving the remain• der of the temporal power. This report seems probable, bat a few months will de termine this point. Recently it Is believ ed, the Pope coot emplates aSsembling the largest gatheling of Roman Catholic lay men the world has ever seen_ A leading religious journal calls attention to a few representative facts in the history of the nineteenth century, in which it is shown the important labors of the laymen have oontributed largely to the present strength of the Papal Church. Looking back to leas than a half century, when the leading Pro testant Churches began to reap the first fruits from mtwonary sccletiee, intelligent and zealous Roman Catholics looked with amazement at the grand results. It was soon discovered that the unorganized ap peals of bishops and priests failed in a great measure to accomplish similar resulta. Forthwith a Catholic society of a similar character in many respects, calloci the Reman Catholic Society for the Propaga lon of the Faith, which has, since its origin, been largely under the administration Of lay men. Some years later the B . Vincent Association was established, chiefly for the support find education of the poor sad neciy. The memorable year 1848 when the straggle for establishing potitLal liber ty s■d untrammeled freedom of the Church, the first Catholic cturcli corko-c.io especial purpose of using more systemati cally end effectually the lay force of the Church was Inaugurated. The remarkable speeches of Count Blontalembert and oth ers at the Catholic Congress of Belgium In 1863 is fresh in the memory of the people cf this day. Viewing these signs in which the lay elements of the Church has been as it never was before useful, is it any wonder that such a report is current that laymen as well as bishops arc to be convoked by His Holiness to assemble at Rome next year. The Great Hunk Rubery at Concord, N. U. —Additional Particulars—Thirty Thou- Kane Dollars Reward for the Robbers. The Boston Atonal of Tuesday says sae traordinasy robbery of the National Bank of Concord, N, H.. routines to be the chief event of local interest and excitement. The boldness and completeness of the transaction, the large amount stolen. and the escape of the robber or robbers with their plunder, form a coutomadon of rare chmumUdettee which are certainly without a partici In this community. The rob bery took piece, as near as can be ascertained, at about one o'clock—certainly between hel ped twelve and two o'clock, the per; rd during which Mr, Cheney, the cashier; was absent at dinner. That It was accom pithed try some one conversant with Mr. Che ney'. movememta, and by one who had previous ly had access to the bank, there Is not the least doubt. One circumstance which strengthens the suspicion that the robbers had had previous access to the bank is tne fact that, a law Say. since, it was discovered that the lock to the outer door bad been tampered with to :such an extent as to precast its being repelled. No serious attention was paid to this, however, and the matter would probably hare been forever forgotten but for the unfortunate event winch has Just taken place. Oa this occasion, while the cashier was absent to dinner, the other door of the bank, which la up one light of stairs, was entered by means of a false key. Having thus got Into the banking room, the robber pro deceded to the vault, which is fastened a couple of large Iron doors. The first was un locked, and the second was locked, but the key remained. By means of the key, the robber unlocked the eecond door, secured and packed up about three hundred thousand dollars In . money and bonds, and quietly and rapidly departed. The leek to the Inner door of the safe, which had to be unlocked, was one of the paneling combi nation character, and now the thief managed to unlock It wattle so short a period Is • matter width Is as mysterious to the bank officers, as the lock ordinarily would hare been to one an, acquainted with It. 7 be bank, now known as th "Concord Nations'," was formerly known as Hi "Old Ootcord Bulk." and was organised nude the National banking laws with a capitol o $lOO,OOO. The =minter lose which It will &agi tate by the rubbery will not be large, probably not more than SSO,OOO, as most of the muds were property of other parties deposited for eafe keeping. A emall wooden trunk which was la the vatal, but which contained nothing, was broken open, and a tin trunk containing bonds belonging to Win. Emerson, was undis turbed, and also one containing bonds beionging to a Mr. Tattle. While the prtceea of plundering was going on, a little girl about ten years old, belonging In the family of Mr. Cheney, the cashier, went up the slake lags Into the batik. She was met at the dew by a man (probably the robber) who told her that aho could not enter. She Insisted, she &aye, upon going In, sailed that she wished to see Mr. Cheney, whim he informed her that he had genet° dinner and would not be back until two o'clock. At this, the girl went home and found Mr. Cheney there, but made no mention of the stranger she sun' In the bank until after the tubber,' had been announced to her. She describce him as dark complexioned, with dark whiskers, and low-crowned black hat—probably fen. At about this time, while tbo robber was prosecutleg. his work undlatudic 1, there were several directors of the bank asac nhied for a meeting in the insurance office o:M Brats on the floor below. The noise of the robber was heard quite distlectly, and one of the director' remarked that Mx:Cheney had returned from dlnnexeer else be had not (gone, and they would hold the meeting as soon as he came down. There is acme little suspicion attached by people oat aide of the bank officers to the presence of a elk pedlar in town during the day. About the time the robbery took place he was In the parlor of the Middlesex House aoillng some goods, and it Is said he appeared glaX101:15 to getaway in time to take the half.pest one train for Boston. What detracts somewhat from the suspicion against him Is the feet that he has visited the town far some yeast past In the capacity of a pedlar, and Lie description Is unlike that of the man loan In the bank by the little girl. There le a reward of 11:0,000 offered for the apprehenelon of the robber and the recovery of toe stolen property, which will probably stimulate the detectives to an energetic and thorough search for the rascal and his plunder. p Attemrt to Kill Lientenat General Grant AD.:trains Not all Hung—Special Train Thrown from the Track.
