RELicunrs INTELLIGENCE Since the meeting of the great National Convention of Congregationalists at Bos ton, a number of the leading religious jour nals of other denominationis have been cilitci.sing the special claims of this body for superiority over others. The publica tion of "Dexter's work on Congregationa!- tsna"—fram the commendation of Congre gational journals as the last and best word that can be said for their peculiar system— has rather intensified the opposit ion views.. We do not propose to enter the arena, nor offer our views an tits much dispute! question, but simply to refer to the subject frees two different stand-points. The "fan. damenta I prlnciple" of Congregmtlanaliam, accordnag to Dexter, is, "The Bible inter preted by sanctified conamo n sense, with all w.se helps from nature, from history, from all knowledge, and eapecially from the revealing bpirit, is the only and saM• cleat and authoritative guide in all matters of Christian fattb; so that whatsoever the Bi ble teaches, by precept, example, legiti• mate influence, is Imperative upon all men, at al/ times; while nothing that it does not sot each ran be Imperative upon any man at any time." Referring to this definition a leading New York paper says: "Mr. Dexter is laying corner stone of a peculiar system; and hi takes one which belongs to Protestantism as a whole, and claims it fortis own little edifice." It Is well known that the real corner -stone of Cengrega lion—that which distinguishes it from all other ecclesiastical systems—ls the cona• pteteness and independence of the local chorea. Mt. Dexter himself defines It to be a "form of church order and government, not a system of doctrinal faith," and therefore may be "held and practiced by. those of liniment religious benefit." It is so held by Trinitarians and Unitarians; by believers in the inspirations:lnc Scriptures and by Parkeritea. And they are all quca ling the language of the journal referred to, "legitimate Congregationalists, so long • as they hold to the completenass and inde pendence of the local church." Mr. Dar ter says It "furnishes the most efficient bar rier against heresy and false doctrine," and yet he admits there are "thirteen or fourteen hundred churches in this country which are, in substance, Congregattenally governed, and which are yet avowedly and fatally heretical In their creed." Here Is another view on this question, speaking of the relative Increase of Congregational. ism and Presbyteriaaism, It Is argued that these two denominations are much of the same age on this contkent, and have enjoyed about equally favorable surroundings, ex cepting that Congregationalista have been identified with the most popular and Presbyterians with the least popular of the five points of Calvinism, yet Presbyterians among us now outnumber Congregational ists by more than three to one. The writer asks, does not this conclusively prove that government by the local churches—Styled, for popular effect, "the liberty :of the local churches"—is a less effective gospel system than a central government vested in Church Councils. —At the anniversary of the London Jews Society, the Bishop of Ripon, stated when the society was first formed, It was supposed there were not fifty converted Jews in the whole of the kingdom. Now in Lon don alone there are a,OOO con, yerted Isreal ites st.d It is known the 4 tyii 20,000 con• vests w L o are visible members of the Church of Christ. Whatever may be the faults of Bishop Elliott of the Episcopal diocese of Geor gia, he utters in a Psstooal letter, words of merit: I would suggest to those parishes whose churches need repair, to set about the work themsolvea, and do everything In the plainest manner and upon the moat econo mical principles. Got! does not look at the decoration of s building, He looks at the hearts which are throbbing within that building. A. lectern, a table, chairs car ried to the house of God, are all that are necessary when the walls are standing; congregational singing can supply the place of the organ and choir. When the edifice itself has been destroyed, some va cant room can be procured where worship may be conducted, or camps be constructed for the purpose. tls asserted that the members of the British Parliament from Ireland,• the entire number, about forty, are Roman Catholics, and not one a Protestant. —AI the tenth annual meeting of the New York State Sunday School Convert.
