On the 12th of August, 1501, wo published in the G...7.Erre an incident in the life of the now notorious lira. Grinder, which serves to show the scheming character of the woman, and the boldness with which she executes her plans. The story 57.111 generally discredited at the time, and as no names were given, Some of the city papers pronounced the statement "purely lens,. timeal." We were under s pledge of eecresv, however, as to the names, and of course could not violate that pledge. 'The publication was lien for *list it Was worth elthent names, and the affair had almost escaped our memory, when It was revived to-day by a gentleman who know the facts. and called oar attention to them. We give the stittement below, supplying the name. of Mrs. Grinder as the heroine of the story : There realdea In this city, In one of the lower wards, a keen, sprightly and dashing woman who has a slow, easy going. simple minded hus band. The match was one of those I a which extremes met--the lady possessing ell the Pellets, strategy and intellect, and the husband content to be merely passive and entirely anheatateve to her will. The household consists of those two pawns, and an only daughter, a romping little girl of some six sumnatts. The family reamed to thiscity when this child was a babe. Efery. b-dy knows, and It is no harm to say It here, that the "pregress of eyenta" is closely Wa what, particularly by the matrons of a neighborhood, and where the ytelts of children, like Male of magas, become "few and far between," the tact Le noted and 'becomes the subject of much 'quiet gossip. ecnuesurprlse was created when a eon friend of Mrs. G. anuonaced that after six long years she was again'to be blesaal. Time grew apace: A visit from the family physician, closely followed by the unwelcome presence of the undertaker, told 01 disappointed hopes. The Gower of a day lay withered and dead. Sorrow leg blends whispered words of sympathy In the ears of the weeping molt cr. The beautiful baby lay cold and silent In the little wale; the minis ter me Sett spoke tender words of con. eoliMh, and the tiny corpse was cre mot to the silent torah. But the stranger will ask what Is strange In all thial Lattho sequel tell. Borne six months previous to the event above narrated, an unfortunate girl applies to a friend for assastance to enable her to bring to Janice a young man who had decayed her, and left for the Were. Nothing could he dens, as the man had entered the govenmentaervice. In two or three weeks attar the death of Mrs. Griader'a child, this girl had occasion to apply to the same party, for advice to enable her to obtain a sum of money due her, and divulged the following singu lar fame" After falling In her effort's to apprehend her seducer, her coneitiou by some means be came known to Mrs. Grinder who sent for her and expressed a desire that she should remain with Ler until her trounle was over—that she would assume all the appearances and all the reapon• abilities, and afterwards adopt the child as her owe.
