A Pr'oud Record In our telegraphic column Is an account of the award by General Grant, of a sum of money, to the three soldiers most conspicuous for gallant ry on the final assault on Petersburg, with an autograph letter to each. One of these, Ser geant David W. Young. to a native and resident of this city. Ho is quite a young man, and en listed In the company recruited In Allegheny City by the late Captain Jeremiah Sample, which was afterwards company E, of the 139th regi ment. In all of the cogagementa in which the regiment participated, the Sergeant, although modest and unassuming in his manner, was noted for bin brave and soldierly bearing, which earned him the promotion to Color Sergeant. In the final assault on Petereburg, which occured on the 2d of Am 11, the 130th regiment, which was attached to the Ist brigade, second division of the oth corps, took the advance, and under the command of Major James IPGreggor was the first to gain possession of the rebel works, Sergeant Young planting the colors of the regiment upon them. The reg iment, although It lost heavily in the assault, retained the adyancethroughcmt the day. It is from the New York licralci "We give the route which. after careful study of existing maps, and long conantatio ea with experienced travelers of those regions. has been derided upon by Engineer Bulk ley as the moat feasible and practicable. The wires of the Pa cific Telegraph line already extend throuzb Cal ifornia, Oregon and Washington Territory to New Westminster, in British Columbia. This leaves the connection to be made in British Co lumbia near the Frazer river, the course of which It will follow northward (east of the Cm • cads range of momatahas) to its headwaters skirting Lake Alevender and Stuart's Lake. This v. 11l properly be considered the neat Beaton of the line. A considerable portion of this sec Lion bas been surveyed by Assistant Engineer Conway, whose explorations timing the winter have been performed upon the lee and through or over the deep snows characterising that re— gion. His explorations will in of incalculable advantage, as the party have made such land marks under his supervision as will enable de pots of telegraphic supplies to be established at various convenient points easily accessible to the working parties, and have placed him in • possession of mneh valuable information relative to the topography of the country and the char acter and disposition of its Inhabitants, which will enable him at once to report to the chief en einem' the quantity and character of supplies es sential fortheprovition of the building parties, and likewise the amount of wire and other tele graphic mater:lal neeeSitary to traverse the dis trict. I es w Wlly Leaving the headwaters of the Frazer river, the line will ran northward through the valley between Cascade and Rocky Mcrantaltus to Samp son river. Yellowing the course of this stream, it will pass through a gap of the Cascade Monn takes and touch the Pacific - coast at various points near Admiralty, Prince of Wales and Queen Charlotte Islands. Thence the line will ran along the coast to the mouth of Copper river, the eastern boundary of the Russian poseessions in America. Following the courseof the stream It will be extended northwest to Port Yonkon, at the junction of the Porcupine and Pell) , livens, and the extreme western outpost of the British American possession. Following the course of the river Yonkon, formed bribe Polly and Por enplhe (a stream 2,000 miles' long, and naelga. bin for steamers for 1,500 miles and for barges the whole length,) the line will reach the Pacific coast again at the town of Nitchaelowekt, on Norton sound, about three hundred milts below Miring Strait. vow TIM. T4CITTIO 15 TO TM CaOSSCH Instead of crosslc. the Pacific at Behring Streit, as originally Intended, Colonel Bulkley has determined to make the passage by sub. merged cables from Michaelcmeki to Bt. Law rence Island, and thence to the other shore at Cape Thadeua. Therm two cables will be re• specticely one hundred and thirty-fire and two hundred and fifty-five miles In leogth. Through the northeastern provinces of A yiatle Resole the line will be erected In an almost en- Judy uninhabited region, and numerous stations will have to be built. The distance to the Amour river from Cape Thadene is about one thousand seven hundred miles, and this will be by far the moat difficult part of the fin 3 to construct and maintain. From the Amoor ricer the One will be extended through North Siberia and the Southern prov inces of Asiatic Russia to Moscow and St. Fe tensburg. From St. Petersburg the main or direct line runs along the Northeast of the Bal tic Sea and Gulf of Bothnia, to and across the English Channel, to London and the Jumping off place of the Atlantic cable on the coast of Ireland. Thence the Atlantic cable will cons. pate "the girdle around the earth," and Puck's preposterous fancy grow tame and common place beside the great reality. TEE small operators and speculators In New York declare that they smell trouble ahead in the completion of the Atlantic telegraph. They say a close and powerful "ring" will be formed to avail themselves exclusively of the expensive dispatches, and that "curbstone" will be no• where In the "bear tight." From these gentle men, at least there will come ■ yell of satisfac tion if the great cable don't work after all. S.EIFrI.4"G .711.1C.111.VE8 I; WORTHY OF NOTICE.
