It ex ceeds eon) , rain storm within te- 111 , 11 , 7 of the "eldest inhabitant," while It cow-lusted, nod the damage, to nrcq-erty along the low streams, especially In Allegheny, is very great. The large sewer which was built from the front of the Penitentiary to the Allegheny river In Allegheny, was incapable of conducting the water off underground the track of the Pitts burgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Anil way, from the outer depot into Federal street, being graded below the level of the Commons, became a vast surface conduit., and a torrent of water eaten reciting down the track, Increasing as it came, until, at the crossing of Marion Avenue, the +ante, wan come two feet deep, and about forty fret broad. One portion of the current rushed down through the coal yard of the Pittsburgh and Connellevilla Coal company, and sweeping down fences, gates and strung posts, washed out thousands of bushels of coal, mach of which we observe down on Rebecca street, near the corner of School, frilly two squares chatant. The main current, however, followed the railroad 'track around the curve, until the new tunnel, under the tracks. at the head of Craig street, was reached. Here the torrent found.an opening, and rushing in, ac complished in a few minutes a more extensive excavation then was Intended. Thousands of yards of gravel was washed out Into Martin and Craig streets, and the Inside tracks of the rail road undermined for a distance of thirty yards, and for a depth of some lice feet. A Mr. Tyler, who kept a grocery store at the corner of Martin •and Craig streets, is a heavy loser. The flood carried the debris Into his bones, until the floor became Overloaded, when the Joists gave way, precipitating his stock of groceries Into the cellar beneath, now toll of water and mud, and leaving his house a perfect wreck. All the callers along Craig Street as far as Laeock, was flooded with water, and a deposit of gravel from the railroad, varying from one to two feet In depth, covers the street and pavement. Along Martin street, from Craig to School, all the cellars are filled, and the street filled with debris. Corry street, for two squares, to In the same alittaelall. Several washes were formed by the water from the street rushing Into cellars, carrying the sidewalks down at the same time. Very considerable damage has been done at many other points in Allegheny; all the streets In the lower part of the Fifth and Fourth ward, and also up nearthe northern city line, have ex perienced mourner less damage from the flood. The storm was a peculiar ono. Those who were observing the approach of the storm as In dicated by the state of the atmosphere, informs tts that the clouds seemed to come from the east and from the west, and that when these opposite currents met, than "she windows of heaven were opened." anziani At Wood's Run, there was a heavy shower, but the heaviest rain did not extend much fur ther west. We have not heard holy far east the atone extended, but Jrdge by our rivers— which are not perceptibly affected—that the heaviest rain was of limited extent, geographi. catty. No serious damage to roads or craps, is therefore, to be apprehended. The Pittsburgh, Fort Warm and Chicago Railroad have a strong force of men at work, thin morning, repairing the damages. As they have still two tracks Iminjured, .at the point where the wash took place, there will be no Im pediment to the travel or business of the road. The Buyer Commissioner of Allegheny will and employment for his "reernits,' for some days, in finding the bottom—or rather the top—of the street above named.
