A Bounty Jumper In Trouble
Mayor Lowry was called upon to-day by a
fellow giving the name of Charles Williams,
who asked his Honor If he did not recollect him
as a witness ins case of robbery which occurred
NM time since at the railroad depot. The
Mayor recalled the case to which he alluded,
and In response to inquiries as to his present via.
it, Williams stated that he had enlisted In Mead
ville, In August last, and on reachieg Camp
Reynolds had deposited WO of his bounty
In the First National Bank of this city, through
an agent of the Christian Commission. The
deposit was made on the la of Septeniber, but
ho had lost tile certificate, and his obJedt was to
get the Mayor td touch for his identity, that he
might draw his money. The Mayor suspected
that there was something wrong about the
fellow, but at the same time he Informed him
that it the money was his he should have It
withouteither trouble or eapense. Setae time
after he learned that Williams had offered a
lawyer fifty dollars to get the money out of
bank, and this at once confirmed the suspicions
of the Mayor that there was something
wrong, Further Inquiry revealed the
fact that. Wllliams had deposited the money
(or one year, but It had not been In bank two
days until a woman presented a latter or order
for the possession of It, but of course the bank
officers contd not let her or any body else hate
it until it was due. It further appeared that
Williams had sold the certificate to a party In
Cleveland, on the 15th of September, and that
he had no claim on the money whatever. He
was then taken Into custody and handed over to
Provost Marshal Foster, who recognized him as
an old bounty jumper, and at once placed him
under guard. His object was to get ,the money
before it was due, In order that he might swindle
the party to whom belied sold the certificate. It
was a sharp dodge, but it did n't
Accident on the Pennsylvania Railroad
Three Men Killed and one Fatally In
Jared.
We are indebted to Mr. J. McC. Creighton,
Assistant Superintendent, for the following par.
Oculars of a fatal casualty on the Pennsylvania
Railroad:
A freight train, west= bound, met with an
accident neat Beatty's station, at half past ton
o'clock Wednesday night. The train consisted
of four cars, two of which were thrown from the
track, from some cause not yet ascertained. The
conductor, David White, of Greensburg, was fa.
tallylnjured. Three brakemen, Thompson Dark,
residbm near Indiana, Parker McDonald, near
Nineveh, and James Blegerd. of Greensburg,
were killed. Thiele unfortunate men were riding
timether myth° sareoplatform, between two ears,
Never before did an accident so, fatal to the crew
of a train occur on this road.
The passenger train, due here at half-past one
o'clock Thursday 'morning, was detained four
hours in consequence of this accident.
