Fruit Prospects In Ohio Mr. M. B. Batsman has examined the fruit trees, of various kinds, in quite a number of locilitioi about Columbus, and states that the prospects are not quite as unfavorable as rep resented. He says : Apples are considerably injured, especially the early varieties, but enough have escaped to afford an average crop, and it is not likely the bud) will be Injured after this time. Peaches are badly injured; and all the fruit buds, sod most of the small branches are kill ed, but Ido not think many of the trees will die from the effects of the winter, unless they were very old or previously di/leased. They were as badly injured in 184 d, and many persons thought them killed, but most of think recovered the following summer. The trees need to be pruned generally, as soon as the buds have started, cutting back all the limbs to healthy bark and bode. The dark color of tho wood under the bark . need not canoe apprehmorien. Cherries, of the meet or heart variation, ' are touch injarcd—thelntit buds all killed— but these are not mush grown here. The Morello, or tart kinds, ore lees damaged-- perbape half the buds killed. Plums and peers are damaged considerably, bat soma kinds seem but little injured, and butlow trees will be likely to die, if the dead branches are cutaway after the leaves start, so as to show where to cut. Grapes ue eery little, if st all, injured, especially where trained •gaieet buildings or fences. They should be immediately trim med, If not already done, as the vines will bleed badly if cut after warm weather nets in. Currants, gooseberries and strawberries are not generally injured. Washington's Birt hday An act has been rend in the House, to do clue lituhington's birthday a public holiday. It provides that the 22d of February, the birthday of the immortal Washington, shall be deathed and proclaimed as a public holiday, and shall be duly observed as Meil; that the payment of all gotes, checks, or other Metre wants,. payable on said day, abaft be deemed to become due on the secular day next pre ceding said holiday. Americans, it is claimed, have not enough and if the number is to be increaded there can certainly be no better or more ap propriate holiday than the 7.2.1 of February. After prayer by the Rev. Herrick JOhnson, the same gentleman delivered a lecture on "Education and our Common Schools." He commenced by laying down the aphorism : "They are not Kings who have thrones, but they who know how to govern them." This Is the voice of History witkher earliest and latest enunciations. Bolton, when he stood before royal stupidity is the person of George 111. to speak of the vast powers of steam and the loom, stood u the true King. in the pros once of crowned majesty. Knowledge is power. Ignorance IA weakness and feebleness and evil. Knowledge is strength. Ignorance makes man grovel on the earth. Knowledge is the wings by which we fly to Ilearen. Ig norance in Africa anJ Australia, destroys the social station of man and wife, and degrades the woman to misery and __fumy. TO America, although knowledge Is the more prevalent and elevates the people, stmerindoeing in dustry, patriotism and the dissemination of truth and morality, yet to certain sections ig norance rules, or rather the wicked role through ignorance, and we witness or hare witnessed the same or worse demoralisations as In Africa or among tbe aborigines of Australia. The Ignorance and wickedools of the South stand to-day a blot on the fair fame of our country. There she anomaly exists of opposi tion to public schools, or any education of the masses; while, thanks ho to God, the consman schools, which, like a net-work, covers the North, form the palladium of our liberties, and are the disseminatore of everything to benefit and elevate humanity. Long may our schools prosper. Let them advance on their grand mission ; le, ticason, disloyalty, ignor ance and wickednmis have disappeared from our load, and loyalty and unity, prosperity, the principles of ete-nal liberty and troth prevail The eloquent lecturer then proceeded hi lay down the views of what constitutes tree edu cation. An able essayist has said that we are atudents of words, end that we spend years in schools end the cloisters of learning, and when we consider our education, we are not to much filled with knowledge, bat are rather bags of wind. This is not altogether true, yet it is too mush so. Passe teachers fill up the youthful minds with facts and items of knowledge.,as coffee is poured into a bag. They introduce them to new stunts', new books of the most varied nature, without inquiring whether they have mastered the old ones. Children under such training become roperficial, and of a feeble and Unmanl char acter, while, if they were confined to a few !woke, and taught thoroughly, far greater benefits would result. After the lecture, a discussion on thorough ne•-s In teaching followed, and the session terminated. Tux MICCOA Ott. WELLB.—The Warren Orron. icle states that the excitement in Mecca con sequent upon the indications of new discov eries of oil by deep boring, is as great at this lime as it has ever been before. A well bas been lately sunk to a depth of nearly a thou sand feet, and those interested have been pur chasing land and leasing largely. Within the last week, one company or men have pur chased land to the amount of fifty thousand dollars, and two other companies have pur chased nearly as much. A s some of these men hare had large experience at Oil Creek, it is supposed that they know what they are about. ANOTHER PAINTER Gual.—Wm. L.
