A now and strange, but far better civilisation has succeeded the criel bond. age and barbaric pomp of former ys. On this comparatively small tract we see a be ginning, an epitome, of the mighty change which has bogus to pus over the domain of slavery and eaten. Let us hope that a pure Christianity and an intelligent spirit of law-abiding Liberty will mark the pro ' gross of thisgreat revolution; and that all deletes there will be lifted up together, so that class shall ever have either the ' will or_power to get their feet upon the .:peeks of the others. As soon as the meeting was organised, the 'Doctor arose, to state the object of the meet ing. This be did at some length in a writ ten document, the substance of which was as follows: That the ministry and Churches had proved recreant to their sacred trust. That the ministry "had ceased to preach Christ and him crucified, and had been preaching the nigger and him glorified;" that the - Chnreh had become very uncharitable, and had engaged in the support of a cruel and unjustifiable war. He also went into a lengthy exposltion of certain portione scripture, dwelling with special emphasis Alien oar Rasloy's cay teribes and Pharisees. These Scribes and Pharisees, by an easy construction, he made , s the_ ministers of the present day—the Jews were the Republican party, and the tithes and offerings were greenbacks. C. R. Starr, on an app'iostion of Mrs E P. W. Packard, of Manteno, in this county, to be discharged on a wtit of habeas carpus from the illegal imprisonment in her own house by her hus band, Rey. Theophilus Packard. About four years since the Rev. Packard commenced a system of persecutions toward his wife, while he was offiebet gas the min liter of the Presbyterian Church at Mon tano, for the purpose, as alleged, of sup pressing her free discussion of religious tenets which were at variance with the or thodox views of the Presbyterian Church. And because doctrines on religion thus ad vanced and maintained by her were new to the Rev. Packard and the three deacons of the church—although maintained by some of the most eminent scholars of both Europe and America—they pronounced her insane, and to be rid of her influence in the church, and that the Rev. Postcard might be rod of her company at home, ho formed the most infamous plot of incarcerating her in the Asylum for the Insane. With this end in view he pronounced herinsane, refused her !tsetse and intercourse with her friends, goaded and tormented her into excitement upon the trubject of-religion. refused her ad tendance to the Sabbath school and Bible alms, and finally to the church; tore her children from her on the plea that she was insane and incapable of caring for them, and on every occasion gave out that she was hopelessly insane. He appointed spies over her--distorted and prejudiced minds, who would construe every act on the theory that she was insane; end after a violent tumult and controversy with her on reli gion, had it arranged to coil in a phyeloitin to give on spinier, ae to her malty or in dimity, and while in that state of mitt:l Packard obtained a certificate of mental ea. oitement upon the subject of religion from a well-known physician of this city. In June, 1850, be actually kidnapped hie own wife, with the ald of one woman, 100 men and three hundred dollars. put her on the oars and took her to Jackson•ille, to the State Hospital, where she remained until last June, when she was discharged She plead hard that she was not insane, and begged for the form of a trial by jury, in conformity with the dictates of reason and humanity, but the Rev. Packard would close the ears of those who would be her friends, by telling them they were the ap peals of a ravine maniac. The Rea. Pack ard imposed upon Dr. McFarland, of the Hospital, or else Dr. McFat land became a willing tool to aid in this nefarious scheme. There are many facts which lead to this last conclusion, and which need ventila Lion. Rev. Packard is a man of about nix-y yetis of age, a faithful type of the bigot: cold, selfish, illiberal, with a email modicum of brain, a physiognomy innocent of ex pression; who was educated in the Calvin bide faith, is a faithful reprraentatiee the total depravity of mankind. Oue bun Bred mules are in hie bead, and his stub bornneas is only exceeded by his ignorance. The animal largely predomiustes hire. Packard is a lady of about lorty• fivarof fine mental endowments, and blest with a liberal educatton. She is so ertg ins', vigorous, masculine thinker, and was it not for her superior judgment, combined with native modesty, she would rank as a 'strong minded woman As it is, ehe comports her conduct strictly to tee sphere Lousily occupied by woman. eche dislike• parade or show of any kind. There are els ebildrenot their motet-mar riags; the y oungeot was eighteen menthe old when the was kidnapped and trans ferred to Jacteonville: t .- The older children have maintained a firm position soloist the abuse sod perseeutic.n toward their mother, but were of too tender age beret:Amber any =Aerial s .•i.t .aee Toe question of her sanity or insanity was tried by a jury, ordered by the J edge. and - every opportunity was offered to pro duce all the testimony on either side of the case that would have a tendency to throw light on the queetion. The physicians who maintained and testified Is her merit:acacia were Doctors Knott and Brows, of this city. The evidence of Knott, however, was on the presumption that all seldom] advo mites of a particular tenet were monome , niaes on that question_ Brown was very positive that she was insane. He *meleet there by Packard and employed for the purpose st granting a certificate of tossed ty, to enable Packard to &blunt her to Massachusetts, and confine hoe iu en asy lum there—a plan very fast maturing when the writ of habeas corpus won Dewed. Brown gave a' number of lucid reasons, carefully written down, upon which Le based his judgment of the insanity, and the first was that she claimed to be In ad vance of the age SO or 40 years :11. That she disliked lo be called insane. 31. That she pronounced me a copperhead. and did not prove the fact. 4h.An ir c .herency of thought, That ehe failed to illuminate me and fill me with Nit. sth. Her over idea to the doctrine of the total depravity of man (With Packard and Drown btfore t her, it will be deemed remarkable that ehe did not believe in the total depravity of mankind.) Gib. Her bell, f that some co laadty would befall tier, owing to my being there, and her refusal to shake hands with me when I went away. 7th. Her viewing the subject of religion from the osterie , standpotnt of Christian exegetical analysis, t and agglutinating the polsynthetical eon, blast's of homogeneous asceticism. All of which is about as intelligent m tbo jargon of a Hindoo. His view was eupported by the testimony of two witnesses —relatives of Rev. Pack and —one of whom swore upon the said exam• ins Lion, that it Wei strong evidence to his mind of insanity, "that a person would offer to leave the Presbyterian Church and join the Methodist." The days of bigotry and oppression are not yet past If Owed-fourths of the people of the world were of the belief of Rev. Packard end his witnesses, the other fourth would be burned at the stake. On the defense; _the testimony of phyel claps who had kmitinlier for a number of years was intreddielk, •logether with her neighbors and assootatee,. all of whom tes tified that notattly wssehe not insane ' but Jfillan . wqman pone/Bed of fine mental and ediaittiorial endowments, a gond and affec tionate mothei, and a true ornament to so ciety.
