If clear and beautiful typography, tinted
paper, and every kind of mechanical advert

the reader of mediocre verse, that be would
accept it as the genuine Inspired article of
poetry, which in outward form it simulates
with a peneverauce worthy a better fortune,
we should say that the author of "Day

that unhappy mortal. Certainly the book is
so unexceptionable in all adventitious mat

A Beautiful Flagstone Pavement
In paling along Water street, a day or tai,
since, our al•cntion was attracted by the spa
cious and olneant flagstone pavement in front
of the well-known eitablishment of Messrs.
Hostetter and Smith, manufacturers of the
celebrated Stomach Bitters. On inquiry we
learned that the pavement was laid by Mr.
Joseph Shallenberger, one of our most suc
cessful and enterprising citizens. In this
pavement can be seen the largest flag ever laid
la this city. It is twelve foot long by twelve
and a half feet wide, and weighs eleven tons.
The stone used by Mr. Shallenberger is all
taken from his quarries on the Youghiogheny
river, and'is of the most superior quality.
The character of the stone is snob that it can
be quarried in immense dabs, and Mr. S. has
the necessary facilities for shaping these to
any required dimensions. Tho durability :of
the stone is also an impornar4 matter, as a
pavement properly laid will last for two Sr
three generations, without the necessity of
repairs. No person, making permanent im
proves-dents in either city should neglect to
empl.ty the rervices of Mr. Shallenberger,
triton he comer; to consider the matter of a I
pavement. We will guarantee that a more I
beautiful, durable or economical job cannot I
be obtained from the hands of any other con
tractor. lie has always on hand ...a ample
supply of 111 every dsts.tription, and is I
prepared to fill all orders promptly end
factorily. •
Messrs. Hostetter & Smith, than ,whom I
there are no More enterprising business men, I
hare now flee wardrooms fronting on Water I
street, omr Ferry, two of which are paved
with flags, and the other three will he simul
taneouely paved her:niter. Those designing
to make improvements of this character
should call and examine the flags in front of
Messrs. Hostetter & Smith's establishment,
The Pittsburgh Female College
The present term of this flourishing and
popular institution will 013E0 on tlo id of De
cember. The attendance has reached the very
large andAratifying aggregate of tsio hundred
cuid rizty-sir pupils. The prospects for the
next term are most encouraging, and a hand
some increase is anticipated. Notwithstand
ing the large additions made to the boarding
department, nearly all the rooms aro already
ogaged. Tho improvements and additions,
:cuds at a cost of some $20,000, aro now com
pleted, except the chapel extension, and this
will be finished, it Is hoped, by the commence
ment of the next term.
Au additional teacher has just been added
to the Peenlty, mating twenty in all. It is
not necessary for us to refer, in detail, to the
corps of instructor,. Suffice it to say that,
from the able end talented President, Dr.
Pershing, down to the primary teachers, each
is fully.qualified for his or her respective sta.
tion, and selected with special reference to
peculiar ability and fitness.
The next term will commence on the Vth of
December, and we would advise tbose having
daughters to educate to send at once to the
President, /Lev. I. C. Pershing, D. D. for a
ratalogue.

The appearance at the Pittsburgh Theatre,
to-night, of the "magnificent Vestvell," will
be ono of the great events of our dramatle
and musical season. That she will be greeted
by an overilowinc house we cannot doubt, for
her anticipated appearance here bag been the
topic of conversation amongst our fashions
bles for the last week. That she will be emi
nently Successful we feel assured, for her beau
tiful presence, and wonderful, rich and melo

Attractivo actress and singer now upon the
boards. The drama selected for her debut is
