Founder in Horses:
Founder or laminitis consists of
inflammation of the vascular d
sen
the !mince of the•horse's foot. It is
usually caused by over action, rapid
driving, and especially by allowing ,
the horse to stand in the wind or , cold
uncovered, after active exercise, or
by drinking freely cif cold water when ,
warm, and allowed to stand still af.
terwards it may also be caused by
derangements of ttui digestive system.
Usually one or both of the fore feet
are effected, but the bind feet may
also be involved. The 'feet are hot
and tender, and the animal stands as
much as possible upon his heels and
trembles when moved. The disease
is usually manifested the next day
after exposure. tze
Dr. Cressey in a recent lecture be<
fore the Connecticut Board of Agri=
culture; said that any case of founder
can be cured if taken - within thirty
hours of the attack. The horse's feet
should be placed in tubs of warm wa
ter, blanket heavily, and get the ani-
Inia l l thoroughly warm. In short the
treatment consists in equalizing the
irculation by making the 'animal
weat, and thus•relieving the feverish
.ondition. Any one who has a horse
bleb becomes foundered should at
dopy vigorous treatment In order
to remove - the disease the case must
be taken in hand before the affection
becomes established: • :

To Keep 'Very Shaded Places
Especially in the front yards of
dwellings, both in town and country,,
which are much shaded; We often see
the ground completely bare; not a
living thing perceptible. Sometimes
there are many nearly nude, strag
gling limbs lying upon the ground or
very near.it, which are unsightly and
every wayworthlessithat ought to be
cut away:- This would give room
there. for some plant or vine that
Would be adapted. to it, and which
would not only cover the" naked spot
and make it a . ." living green," but.,
would: be adding Very much 'to .the
general appearance s of the. premises.
The besj vine for
. this purpose is un
dolibtedfy the periwinkle. It will
grow almost anywhere in the shade
if the proper attention is given to• it,
but not otherwise. It is a beautiful
vita and Will densely cover. vt.hc
ground, producing' nearly the 'whole
season a very pretty blue ftower.
Weeds, however, are 'its deadly enc.
Mies. It cannot fight them. -Steadily
they Will encroach until they drive
away . our • faveirite and occupy the
fieid 'of battle. A little help now and
then, however, will defeat . the com
mon-enemy, and "permit us to enjoy

A New Pest for Partners
The New Jersey experimental ag

lately - received a sample of clover-.
seed from Wilson Fitzgerald & Co.,
of Camde n Eddy contained numbers
of the lame of-some insect. The seed
came from Kempton, Pa. - Professor
Cook, director of the station, sub
mitted -it to A. 8. Fuller, of Ridge
wood, - for microscopic examination,
and-he reports that the larvre are, in
.his those of the recidorayia

of Lintner, and closely allied
to the Hessian fly and wheat midge.
Its females deposit their eggs on ,the
seed while-in the clover head in'the
fleh — T - When the clover is right and
falls down-in autumn the larvie crawl
out, enter the ground and: remain
there - to • finish or complete their
transformation, coming forth as flies
the coming season. But if the clover-.
seed iS gathered or the hay cut, the
grubs or pupae are also gathered, antt
while most,of,them ivillsbe killed in
balling the seed, still a few, may es

or violently shaking, it in some kind
of a mill would probably be the most
'udicious way or destroying the grubs
or pupae. If the seed was placed in
.tight barrels, with a JittlCi gum cam::

the -insects And not . injure the germ

this matter and See that all insects in

Culture of the Melon.
Of all our delicacies in summer the
melon is tnore welcomed than any of
the fruits indigellioll to our climate,
and deservedly so; not only on et
count of being a luxury, but for its
beneficial effects op the syfstern. we
receive thew by thousands, and extra
good ones command high prices,
with quick sales. They are not
grown to perfection on heavy cl a y
soils, but on light, sandy, dry loca-'
tions • they reach immense propor
tions and ripen' early. But while_
melons grown more 'or less on all
classes of.soils, and every one sectos

yet,,like everything else, there i 6
right way, and in order to have them
of fair size and good quality it.shunl , l
be closely followed. - '
The same culture adapted to the
watermelon applies also to the musk
and cantelonpe varietieS. Strange to
