"As Suggested-in my report of
last year', the Clydesdales appear to
i r
be 'flanking the ercherens, or at
legit outnumber' `g them ,on Th'tir
ow& `ground . Of the former breed
there were ten where there was one
last year, and a the Percherons
there were something like prcipor
tionately less. It is urged against
the French horses that thi are too
'large; have too heavy hind and fore
quarters, and "too small a middle'
piece," (as an old farmer expressed
it), to stand up under a hot sun, and
the hard work of all kinds all the,
year through. It is claimed for the
Clydesdales that while their progeny
is not as large as that of the Per
eherons, it is quicker, has more , style
and action, and:when bred to, half,
three•quarters, or full-blooded racing
stock, they make a class of carriage
horses for which there is 'an unlimit
ed demand in large cities at large
pricei.
" But=let it not be thought or un
derstood that either the Short Horns
or the 'Percherons are abandoning
the ground in Illinois. I„am report
iUg what I think I see of the chang
s. going.on in &tock-breeding fash
ions. It will be a long time before
CBI:MEER, 4'
the Short Horns will not outnumber
all other breedtaken together, and,
a time quite s long before the
t ,ri
strong blood o 1 i the Percherons fails
to show very dr_inspickusly on the -
Allinois-bred horses. SUmething bet
ter than the. Short Horn has been
sought for, which will do better on
grass alone,l.and that has led to the
introduction ; of the HerefOrds; and
something ;of lighter weight' ; and
more style and action, that the Per
cheron has been called for, and the
'Clydesdales have been imported;'
.and the 'result Will , be, not the aban
donment of the one old race or `
` ; the
other,
but the . . multiplication :` of
breeds and 4acis, which will. more
fully respOnd to the, increased de

suited to ill the 'requirements of the
times. t - : B. F. J.

Although cows require • a great
deal of water, many Of thein are al
loWed to suffer - for , want 'of it, be-
Cause their peculiar fastidigusness is
not understood or regarded.: The
Ainerkai Cultivator • says on tAis
subject.: If the cows have to drink
from any have other than brook or
riyet, do - not. , turn nut more than two
at a time. tMany of our. hired, men
expect a ciaw to drink like ailliore:
which they certainly do not.• Lead

'drink immediately or not at all, . but
a cow will usually stand and look,
wet her lips and sip a mouthful., half
a dozen times before slit; begins to
drink in good qarnest. j Some cows,
how l evdr, will ' drink immediately
But' n case of either cots Or; horses
proper care cannot.be taken of them
till their peculiarities are well under
stood;- and whoever undertakes to
mike the most of his stock must
make every individuil one a speoa
study. If cowsare:watered out o(a

and if a change is, made it will be in
stantly detected. Few cows will eat
hay that another has breathed 'upon.
It is well to humor tlie animal in
such eases, while' stlyfying to supp'y

• Look 6 / qt for Glanders. •
A stirgeon in the German ;army
calls the attention of officers and sol
diers and of all who have to do with
horses, to the danger of using ti:e
handkerchief to,wipe away the foam,
from the mouth or nose of a horse,
which may have been thrown upon
their clothes. Some months ago,
the writer'atates, an officer game to
him suffering from an obstinate cold

f rO BOIL' ONIONS.--Some years ago
I Fend in an - English journal a - Con
tribution of Mr. Frank Buckland,
where he stated that after mental-fa
tigue and occasional sleeplessness he
was greatly benefitted by eating on
ions, at
.l•is dinner. ,Flow soporific
or sleep•inducing the onion, the °Web
despised vegetable, is. I am not pre
pared to state; but kilow that .many
persons who are troubled with sleep
lessness Wile them. If properly boiled
in at to get the .twang out of them,
the onion is a most delicate vegeta.:-.
ble. To irvery quart of onions a
qtutrtof cold water, with s half ta
blespoonful of salt. Boil not too fist ;
for tiro boars. Drain in colander
thoroughly and allow to get cold.
Make a sauce with a tablespoonful pf
butter, the same o' flour, and orle
half `pint of milk; rub butter and
flour perfectly together, with a pinch
of black pepper. - Boil milk, which
poor over.flour and butter, and stir
all the time to keep smooth. Put
onions in Lance and let them heat urr•

The, Virtues of Buttermilk.
Few people know tbe,Jralue of bUt
termilk. A proper and \constarit-toie •
of buttermilk will entirely core the
constant craving for stimulants to
which many persons, from long use,
have habituated themselves:. 'Lye
it'handy, and when the appetite says
whiske or other stimulant,' drink
half tumbler of buttermilk ; the
cravi g desire will be satisfied, Dad
the mach will be much benefited
and treugthened , initead of weak n
ed. here are very many good effects
fromik, free use, of buttermilk.. It "-
alone will often cure sour stoma!, ,
ancilienhanently. The lactic 'add
needed by many persons is supPLed
by, butterwilk much more larg..ly
than by any other known food bever
age. One vital and important use of'
Ifuttermilk is the prevention of val
vular ossification of the valves of the
heart, from which, in this,country,
so many persons die, especially old
1 persons. There are many other pe
r euliar so-called heart diseases which
litetic acid, if partaken freely, pre
vents. ' The so-called fluttering or
palpitation. of the heart, - consequent
upon a lisorded, dygpeptic stomach,
can _be entirely removed by a flee
uie of buttermilk. There Are many
other unpleasant feeligs thus cur.d, '
all of which their seat n the stonn.ch
—melancholy, the blu,' etc. . -.-
