Suggestions in Farm Manage- In almost every, farm nel4hbOrn+ hood we may find farmers whose sys tems of farm management, from year to year are decidedly, bad—bad for their own, ipocketi—bai for their rep utation and bad for adjoining farms. Their syntem of management .allpw weeds to mature, and Scatter their seeds to adjoining fields and farms, valuable farm fertilizers to be, wast.' ed by washings and other ,causes, and in consequence.thei farms too ra pidly deteriorate in fertility. It is 44 to see a fine farm with a naturally fertile soil suffering waste from neglect in the ciwnerto follow a proper system of husbandry. In some few cases such manage ment is excusable, but' usually we Inv trace it to carelessness and neg lect on the part of thn owner of the farm If we inquirelnto the cause for such neglect we shall find it is usually a lack of help. The , farmer. says he has not. time to attend to such and such things and he cannot afford to - hire much help. ; In very many cases the Inas that will •be sus twined by •sucti impropf manage-, Tent directly and indirectly would more than pay foesnificient help for cultivating the Path un - in a` host thor ough and faraier-like manner and at the same tine keftp thenVinproving in fertility, nfttibp!sequeutly return to the ownerlnuclimore clear profit. He reminded us- that he had not time to put the soil, where the grain was planted in properoncli tion, and his wheat for the same cause was sown rather late last fall so that it did not make enough growth . before cold weather set 'in. Another difficulty was, as 'we knew from appearances,—the soil had not been manured for" a number of Years. Around his horse stable was large quantities of manure - that had not been hauled for two or three years, his barn yard was also well littered with good manure, but it ivaslso eon 'structed that the leaehin,gs were car ried away to a creek by heavy rains, causing, great/ waste. His pig pen also showed much previous neglect, and loss from the same cause. His corn fields showed the same thinness of stand as- his other grain field and would have yielded double had a few loads of manure been ap plied to the soil. But he says' he could not get time to haul out any manure and,so he planted his corn without manure. Tall pig weeds were discernable all ()writhe field, to such an extent that be felt the need of an apology and said : " I have been so busy this summer that I - was obliged to neglect cultivating my corn the second time which accounts for my corn and potatoes beibg so weedy." " What are you experimenting with l' in that , field ?" we inquired, pointing to a field where nothing but tall not= ions weeds three or four feet high could be seen. Let - us fag,- gest how Willey be improved so that farming will pay better. All the manure that is made upon the farm, at least, Ahould be applied, to the soil. It is very poor economy to convert the productions of the farm into manure and then suffer them to. go to waste for want of being hauled out and applied to the better exchange or sell our products and replace their worth as fertilizers,. with manure from the city or village. It is the reverie of economy to at tempt to operate a farm without suf ficient help •There are certain kinds of work, which at certain seasons will not bear putting off, and unless they are attended to in good time it will be too late, and therefore loss will be the certain result, for work done too late is rarely . done well, be sides being , much more laborious and costly. While it is a inult with some farmers that they hire too much la bor, it is also a fault with some, and we believe of more than the other ex-, treme, that they employ too little. labor upon their farms. Of .course all farm labor must be well directed to yield profitable: returns. ' For a puinbcr of years we have made it a practice , to dig potatoes late, except those, needed for ,table use, or for the Market. There is a diversity of opinion which exists on" the Siibject, however, among some of . our best farmers, some believing that early Iligfzing prevents rot, ..while others believe that a -potato Oncedi: seaseewill rot whether In or out the. ground. If this is true, We have . a strong iirgument in favor of late digging, as the poor diseased pota toes will .have rotted. in the ground, where they will improve the fertility of the soil, rather than infect the cellar with noxious odors. We have noticed tbatPotatoes dug early and. stored in the cellarare as, likely to rot, as those left in the grci, und until_ late in - r Potatoes should not be stored in barns or out-buildings during the Autumn months, .as they will dry andshrink up, and-- lose their fresh ness.
