It is oLly, a few years since the. healing virtue of the waters was diScoVered, and yet the record of wonder ful cities would fill a volume. That these accounts are no fables, is easily demons trated, as, in most cases the Subjects are "living witnesses" of the truth aud per manency of the cure. The waters are retched at a depth of about sixty feet below the surface'. The last twenty-five feet is clay. When the pipe passes through this the water rises, in some places, to a height of fifteen feet above the ground. The flow is continual, and never affected by either dry or wet weather. •In appearance it is as clear as crystal, . and to the an is like pure spring water. As an evidence of tile presence in it in a large degree, of iron, by immersing a knife blade in it for a short-time, the steel will be so thoroughly charged as to lift, a shingle nail as readily as a magnet. Glass subjected to the ac tion of the war also turns a beautiful amber color its lti short time. Prof. Dana, of Yale Cipllege, says of him: "Prof. Ouyot, the author of The Earth and Man,' is one of the ablest 'Physictl Geographers in the *Old, and is , remarkable; not only for his general knowledge and his comprehensive views, but also for the simplicity of his method orPressrating his favorite science to read ers or hearers." Prof. Joseph Henry, of the Sinithsonian Institute, recommends his maps as "greatly superior to any works of this kind previously published in this country." At the Vienna Exposition in 1873, her received a Medal of Progress —the highest honor bestdwed upon any American for Educational works. This is sufficient to shot , the (politica, tions'of the alithdr, and the estimation in which his books are held by the most Competent judges. It cannot be otherwise than that his series of Geographies 'must be greatly superior to those compiled by mein , drill-masters; men who, however experienced in teaching,Lve no scientific training or knowledge for so great an un dertaking. Students of Law or Theologj . read Blackstone, and Hodge, and Watson. Students of Philosophy and Science, 'pore over Reid, Hamilton, Bacon and Agassiz. In these departments, and ,indeed in all others, with the tingle eiteeptieit of Edu cation, it is a recognized principle that the best books come from the greatest and'most original minds. And this prin ciple must come to be recognized in Edu cational matters. The day of mete om pilers_and empiricists must soon reach its end. We see ; a token of this in tho re markable unanimity with which the. Pri ncipals of our Graded. Schools and Made mies recommend Guyot's Geographies. They find that great ability and knowl edge pay in . text-books. Pupils get on' faster- and with far greater ease to the teachers. We can bear testimony from personal observation as to the more rapid progress made by children in the use of these books, as compared with these Of a previous date. We are justified in expect ing larger-results in. geographical studies in our graded school in this borough, and We trust that in due time all the schools in our county will realise the same benefit.. THE ":1108S.”—A BRILLIANT DISMAY. =The streets of Towanda presented a•re markably busy and brilliart appearance on Monday last. The occasion was the inauguration of a summer eamplign by the " United States Fanning Mill Compa ny." ' About noon eight matched teams of horses were led up in front of DAYTON'S h:paiem shop, where e egant new harness were. placed upon them. They were then taken down to the carriage factory 'of .TAMES BRYANT,where new wagons await ed them., The wagons were then taken to the manufactory and loaded with mills, after which the procession proceeded to a point opposite the Yank, where Mr. Wl) oo "took" the whole thing, making a beau tiful picture. The Lin-ta Band, followed by a large throng of peopl?, made their appearance at this time, and, while dis coursing excellent music.m:uchcdthrough the streets, f flowed by the Farming Mill earaleade and citizeuq. The grand di - play was a most gratifying surprise to many of our people, 'or while most Of them had heard of the " Boss," but feW realized the magnitude of the enterprise, or the important relation it bears to the prosperity of our town. A short history of the mill May not be uninteresting. About three years since-, the patenteei. Mr. J. W. JonNsosz, came to thi:i place with a single mill, which be exhibited day after day for many weeks .without indu cing any. one to invest ill his invention. Drivenalmost to despair, he finally- per 'suaded Capt. MANt - ima-: to take hold of the mill and manufacture a few on trial. The result prored so successful that Capti. 31. at once determined to commence the* manufacture on a large scale, anti to thiS end organizeda company with a capita! of $,20,W0. The company has now corn,- mene4.l work, anti will manufacture millS and semi them to every part of the corm try. A trial nr three years has proved it to be superior to any other now - in use, and - the demand for it- among intelligent farmers is daily increasing. The sales in this State alone, will probably reach ten thousand this season. The mill is also being extensively manufactured in Call. ada. The ,FUCC.CSS which has crowned. the ef forts of the inventor is gratifying to the, entire' community, and the evidences of apprreiatiou' which were manifested on Monday must have been cheering to him., The farmers of the country owe , to him a luting debt of gratitude, anti his name will be handed down to posterity as one of the benefactors of the agriculturist. My friend's theory, however, seems the more likely to be productive of immediate re sult, inasmuch as ho is not so nice about coming down from his independent perch, and setting himself to work in the "mud— which mud, be it ever so dirty, should at least have the merit of supporting his neutral fence rails. His manifesto is much more practical in i'social way, than Calthls is in a politiciat; and betrays far 1e17.9 seruple as to the policy of keeping to the old party lines. lie is down on tram mels, and contemplates a terrific ride thrust at exclusiveness. We are suing to,invite most of the 4:iute.; married people, :and all the oldish young ladies,.a:nd the whole bevy of pretty girls promiscuously: If some of them sit around and look bored, and some more stand around and look. as if J they were trying awfully hard to enjoy themselves, anti others of them exeutte themselves from adding their quota of pleasure and testi mony to the occasion, as Witr.ism Ci7L LEN dikrand yet others make known I two or three choiees they are holding in reserve, as Cu sul.F.s Fes:sets did, • it will : 1 only be in ; the nature of things social with: Mrs. IlitisKnEELs, as it was in the nature of things political with Cam.. They will stay late enough to satisfy the gas compa ny, and Muss refreshments enough to gratify the hostess; and then will come lie plaudit, " Well done, goad and faith ful servant,". just as it did to CARL, from' lips as disin terested e as arc the independent rn jouals. - We have given parties ita a matter of principle every season, but never with such presPect of entire satisfaction as since we have declared our independence of old party lines. Mrs: B. has also re ceived valuable suggestions from M AININA JANH upon the advantages of introducing a mare liberal arid nun-exclusive element into her sticial entertainments, such an extent, that her attention is directed to the fact that the most unbending evils of social' HO are attributable to its older tnenthe.rs. "The most inflexible sinners are the old ones," she adds, knowingly. li " The hatid4 that hold up the social bars • most unflinchingly against impecunious' worth and, ungilded virtue, are the wrin kled oues,l' she sighs, , ominously, and it may clime Ito that my beloved will clamor • for a 'system of venerable decapitation, and a social inquisition as hugely indis criminating as the old - lady , affair at Washineten, or the more ancient one of • ^ time Jesuit fathers. • C.
