middle of the bed; a Towanda gentleman fami
liarly celled "Beeman." He routed the intru
der, who forthwith made—a rash for the next
room, and bounded on a bed occupied by i jew
'peddler:: The peddler thus -suddenly roused
from his - - slumber, imagined himself -in the
hand's& a midnight garoter, and cried mur
der" to the top of his . voice, which quickly
brought Sheriff Mooney and a number or other
.persons to the rescue. "Beeman" gave vent)
to his indignation in language not over pions,
but very emphatic, and ended up .by declaring
than` he "could lick any man in(Sullivan coun
ty."s This roused the patriotic impulses of Our
oia meat man, Martin Welsh, who attempted
- then and there to "punish" the slanderer of
the fair -fame of-our county, bat •tho by-stand
era interfered and prevented kith from "chaw
ing up "-the boaster. The Sheriff then produc
ed some iron bracelets, which ho proposed-to
put on the innocent gentleman who only want
ed to sleep on a jew peddler, but finally, on due

too Much frightened to sleep, packed an his
traps and was roidylor a start early in the
morning. As.he was leaving, he anxiously in

At 10 o'clock, 11ev. ,Tosr, JEWEL ~.was intro-
duced to the Conventien, and delivered $ very
practical and interesting address, on "The Sa
perintender.t's Difficulties." The speaker held
that the-whole chtirc# should be interested in
the school, and that the fisperintendent should
be chosen by the church. The Pastor Should
conduct the teachers' meetings. The Superin
tendent must learn to govern himself, or he.
Can never govern the school; and must always
realize his responsibility to God; should entlea-,
vOr - to live above the trials and vexations of the
world, not trusting in his own strength, but al
:ways realizing Qv weaker he is in himself, the
Stronger he is in God. •
The large and varied experience of the speak
er, in the &today:school work, gave-additional
weight and interest to 'excellent address.
