Aceer(llngly, Mr. Toss= Lmtz, then of Pond Hill, and I, fixed an apparatus for testing the fact. We took s large wooden bowl and hored a bole in the bottom of it, into which we Inserted the stem of a der pipe.. We then placed the bowlbottom upwards over the spring, till it was filled with the gas. Then, on remov ing the finger from the end of the pipe -stem (where it bad been placed toprevent the escape of the gas), and applying a matchove were gratified with seeing it blaze np some eight or ten inches, After that, this gas was frequentlY burned for curiosity ; but the spring affording bet a small supply of water, is now, since the land has bceu cleared up around it, become al -1 most dry, but doubtless the gas still escapes. Besides the gas at the spring, there are several other places semi twenty•five rods from the spring up the creek, where it can be found. I have °Rol; seed it blubbering up through the water when the creek was low, issuing from the crevices of the . rocks. at the bottom . Now as Illuminating gas is obtained at West Bloomfield, the city of Erie, and several other places, is it not highly probable that it may be obtained at this place by the same process? And if such a fountain of gas as that of West Bloomfield could be opened at Rome, it would be sufthtiont to il luminate the vhole county of Bradford. This may seem visionary ; so have many other things that are now realities. There are many inure foolish things undertaken in this world than the boring for g i lts in Rome would be. The gas is doubtless thlre; but how much, or the expense of procuring it, is unknown. This spring was formerly quite ce'ebrated for , the cure of entanetnis and other diseases, but owing to the scant supply of water it hasentire ly failed of becoming a noted watering-place. A hotel was erected hero by.lititos PRICE and occupied by him. For some time after he left it was occupied by /AA lITEHIENH, Esq., who lived there at the time he was elected sheriff of Bradford county. Then it was kept by .T.karns LANtinos, and by others, but Blies entirely run down and will never be revived except it is by the means of gas. Most, if not all, of this gas region is at present owned by my old friend, Dr. CARE WO/MIMI, and I hope that he will forgive me for (eking of there being so much gat about him, The above is gaseous edough for one article. If it is thought to be not tit for publication, just throw it in the tire and See if it %ill burn, or any light in that way more than the reading.
