The "tracts" consisted of lots usually con taining from one to two, three, or four hundred acres, more or less, each let marked with the name of the supposed owner. These were most• ly suppositions names. It would be a tedious task to follow the me. anderings of the bounds of this purchase. The eastern corner of the southern line ter minated in the neighborhood of Pond Hill. The purchase (as near as we can get silt) embraced the whole of Rome township, parts -of Bbeshe• quirt. probably part of Athens, latchtlekl, por tions of Windham, Warren, Orwell, Pike, Stand ing Stour, Tuscarora', Wyalusing, Ac. WHO WILL TELL THE STORY ?,--The enquiry arises in my mind, Who will tell the story of the exit of ofhors from this present state to the unseen world, from whence no traveler returns? One after another ul the first settler. of this country are leaving us, and, while I am sketch ing this, I am apprised by the token given by the church-bell, that a procetsion approaches the house of worship, bearing the body of the late Joux C. nocuwitu., who died at the resi dence of his son, Satter+ A. ROCKWELL, Feb. 18, 1870, in the 77th year of his age. In this procession Were hientwo brothers—an that are alive in this county—Ewes nocawan+, of Canton borough, now about 83 years of age, whose once erect position is now bowing over— still his memory remains beyond ethers—and hi. brother, Reres Itocawn.i., of Troy borough, now about 75 years. They have come, ai' a large circle of relations, to take their last look at the lifeless remains of Joni( Citrus noon- While others are permitted to assemble and listen to the kind words and huitructiou that will be given by Elder L. P. Priracrun on' this occasion, I am again prostrated by the erysipe las,- and confined to the house, barely able to pencil these thoughts. -- My mind is led to think of the few now left in the western part - of this county capable of re biting the privations they endured in the first settlement of the country, in trying to support a family. In this number, I recall to mind the aged and well-known Col. /stn Wrisort, of Alba borough, atill in the enjoyment of tolerable health, with his snowy locks sort and white as the wool on a young lamb. . His memory remains active, and he is able to relate with interest his first intro duction to the old log house; In Leßoy township, the aged Deacon Aaiun KNAPP still lives, but :a almost broken .down with age and' disease; his memory' impaired, still leauing on his staff, expecting and waiting his summons to leave, and every reason, so far as health is concerned, to . welcome death, the end fears." Pixvirs. Who does not like to call to mind that aged and once active citizen,_ Bran Brouwar, of Franklin township, who still is permitted to re main for the utisfactke of hisnumerons friends and acquaintances he has made during a life of some 90 years? May this cheer him on! Mr. heath Brace, of West Burlington town ship, is the only inniving settler remaining on the Sugar Creek. Although his memory re mains somewhat perfect, yet he reminds the observer of some tall oak that has been left in the field ;—its body has almost ceased to hare life, its roots hare long given evidence of decay, and some ationg blasts that sweep over the land will soon prostrate it. In conclusion, who more deservedly demands a notice here, or a place in my 'fiteilloo; than that aged and • distinguished citizen of East Smithfield, Dr. Ramos Antoci ? Although in the enjoyment of the conveniences of life, yet who does not remember his well-chosen part ner for life, who, a few years since, was' sum moned to exchange this present state of being for that of an Immortal state? and though he has endeavored:in submit to-the'risitations of Providence, yet he evidently toeh old! his loss.
