g)k,gricultural. Preparing for Winter. Strawberry beds . should nosi bo covered, in most northern localities.' It is not alwaysriecessary to protect the plants, still there are very few varieties thatiwill not yield enough more to pay for the extra expense end trouble. Grass cut from low grounds is the best for this purpose, as it contains fewer seeds that will be likely to grow on upland.: Straw isgood if th reshed clean ; if not the grain will fall out, and be very likely to cause considerable trouble another season. The mulch applied to strawberry plants in the fall should ' be light, not more than one inch deep, as shade is the main object in covering, so as to prevent the ground freezing and thawing , with every change of the weather, in-winter and early spring. ASPARAGUS BEDS may be covered this fall with manure from the barn-yard. Spread it on thick, for there is but little datiger of making the ground too rich - for this vegetable. Next spring the manure may be removed or forked into the soil ; this last plan is the best of the two. HAULING. OUT XANURE. It is a good plan to haul out the manure in the fall and spread it upon grass lands;: or even where it is to be ploughed under in in spring. There is no dangefef waste unless the land is so uneven that the manure will be taken off by heavy rains. A top dressing of coarse manure applied to' late sown wheat or rye will often double the crop Those who have these grains on rather poor land should try the top' dressing system, even if they cannot afford it on only a few rods square. WO are certain 'that the results will satisfy them that it is highly beneficial. GATHERING LUTZ& ' • Millions of tone of leaves are now falling to the ground in this country, i - and they should not be allowed to go to waste. All through the Eastern States the land getting old and sadly dcficicnt•in materials for producing good crops, but how m• farmers -ever think of saving the leaves from the forests or groves on their farms ? There is no better fertilizer known than decomposed leaves. Eiery gar- liner is aware of this fact, and care fully saves all that comes within his reach. Next spring the manure heap will be altogether too small to suit most firmers, and now is a good time to increase the size by gather ing all the leaves, and compinating them with' barn-yard manure. Damp, - rainy days-are the best for gathering leaves, because they bold together better when damp than when dry. DIGGING TREES All harily trees (iixcept evergeens) that are to be tr_ansplanted in the spring, may be taken up now ; and all broken roots and the end of those cut off by the spade should be pared smooth, and then heeled-in a dry place, covering , the roots a foot or two deep. Trees taken up this fall, and carefully trimmed and heeled►in, will be far more certain to grow next. year than if the digging is delayed until epring, for the pimple reason that the wounds made on the roots will commence to heal daring the winter, and be. ready to throw out any feed ing roots harly in the season. Be sides this, spring brings its own work, and we are very likely to delay transplanting trees until too libte for safety. It requires time for the wounds on the roots of trees to heal over, and it is better to give plenty when it costa nothing additional. DLINTISG nutns Itardy_ bulbs, such as hyacinths, 1 tulips, crocus, and lilies should . all be in the ground as soon as possible.— They can be pis rated later in the sea son, but they will not do as well as when planted early, for if the soil is too cold to allow them to make new roots this 'fall, they are very likely to be killed by frost before spring.— Early planting is the only safe plan, either for fall or spring. MINTING TREE SEEDS. All kinds of hardy tree seeds should go into the ground while it is in - a condition to work easily. Chestnut, oak, hickory, maple, and similar seeds may now be sown. Pear and apple seeds may also be flown, although some prefer to keep Om in sand until spring ; but soil and climate differ, and the system followed may be varied to suit each. But let the work be done this fall that can be safely, and therby gain sv much on another year. LANCE ANT) HEATY POULTRY.-A h•reign exchange records the follow ing figures in representing the re spective weights.bf different birds at late poultry show in Rngland, which are as followe-t—Tukkeys--Oock and hen, exceeding mole year old, first second, third and fourth prizes re• spectively, 50 pounds, 46/ pounds, and 42), pounds ; birds of 1867, first prize, 3u pounds, 13 ounces ; second, 35 -pounds third, 35 pounds •, and fourth, 33i potinds. Geese—White gander and goose, exceeding one year old, first prize, 541 :pounds ; second, 49 pounds ; bir ds of 1807, first prize, 44 poun ds ; second, .41 pounds ; gray and mottled, exceeding one year old, first prize, 54 pounds ; second, 41 pounds ; birds of 1867, first prize, 451 pounds ; second, 451 poun44. Ducks—White Aylesbrirg (drake and , duck), first prize, 18/ pounds ; second, 17/ wunds ; third, 161 Rouen, first prize, 191 pounds ; second,lB pounds ; third, 18 pounds; fourth, 16 pounds ; fifth,, 151 pounds; sixth, 151 pounds. Arm an experience of 50 years, a writer in N. E. Farmer says that good cows will eat, on an average, 20 lbs. of bay per day when giving milk, 15 114. when dry. Not by guesswork, bat tested by actual weighing for months at a time.— They will pay well for their keeping by yielding an average of 0 quarts of milk per day throughout the year. Ho estimates summer pasture at 50 cents per week, and milk at Scents per qaart. A MEMBER of - the Paris Academy of Science tested the laying capacities of ducks and hone--threje - , of each for the term of one year. The three hone produced 247 eggs, and the ducks . 517. As ducklings are more easily raised than chickens, and when grown produce more eggs than the latter, and are as valuable when kill ed for market, the advantage would seem to be in favor of the ducks for profit. • Co?MUI .
