The proceeds of both Donations amount ed to over one hundred dollars. Useful as the gifts are,we value much higher the kind feelings which prompted the liberal action. May the gift of eternal life through our Lord Jesus Christ, be bestowed on all our almoners. Especially the young men who contributed their money so willingly, may consecrate their immortal souls on the al tar of Christ ; and find eternal reward of the Gospel. Mtdium in parvo. D. E. BOWEN. The people have been considerate of my wants and comforts, and I take pleasure iu being connected with a church and people, manifesting the liberal ity of those within the bounds of the Wya lusing charge. A F. HARDING. Seal" The extreme cold of the past winter, had made the ice in the pool of the dam, at this place, of unusual thickness, aud fears were entertained of the destrue- j tion of property, when it moved off. For tunately the weather has been very favora ble, and the ice passed out of the pool, on Thursday evening, without doing any dam age. We do not hear of any injury to the canal nor to any of the bridges on the North Branch. FlßE. —About one o'clock on Mon day last, the Turning Shop on Shepard's Creek, near this village, belonging to S. T. Dicker, took fire, which, together with its contents, were consumed before any mate rial assistance could be had to stay the flames. There was much valuable lumber and unfinished work in the shop, none of which was saved. All the machinery and tools, and some fine cabinet maker's tools were also destroyed. Neptune Fire Co., of i this village hastened to the spot with their engine, but were too late to be of much ser- ! vice. The loss under the circumstances,is quite ; severe on Mr. Decker, it being from SI,BOO to s3,oßo—insurance SBOO. W. ll.Bassett lost a chest of superior cabinet tools. Or son Waldo also lost a ehest of joiners tools. Several customers had work in the shop which was burned. The fire occurred while the hands were at dinner, and is supposed to have been accidental.— Waverly Advo oate. RAIL-ROADS. — VYC learn that the Lehigh Valley E. E. Co. have purchased the Fittston branch of the L. A B. li. E. : j the understood price is $5u,000. A week or j two since we mentioned that the Lehigh A ' Susquehanna E. E. Co. were actively en- ; gaged on the rock bluff's, south of town. — j They have lost the Fittston branch, this j work is now suspended and the force of la- ' borers transferred a few feet lower on the j bluff to cut a lit >v towing path for the canal, j It is understood that the Lehigh Valley ! road, after crossing the canal near Mill : Creek, will kti p between the canal and river to a short distance north of the Tompkins' Shaft, where it will cross to the east or j berme side, following the line of the L. A j B. branch, through town to the present de- i pot at North Fittston, where it will cross [ the L. AB. It. it,,and continue up the river i Susquehanna. By this transfer of the l'ittston branch to | their rival, the Lehigh A Susquehanna Co. j are literally bluffed out of town—at least the ! bluffs prevent their getting in, except by an j ascending grade from Port Griffith through ; the depression where the E. 11. of the Penu'a j Coal Co. is now built.— Pillston Gazette. ______ W ILEI.Y THE MURDERER.—Governor Geary on Saturday last issued the warrant for the execution of Alexander B. Vilely the murderer of McElwee, now in Jail of Lu zerne county, on Friday, March 15tli. The murderer was convicted in May last. The citizens of the Borough v,ud vicinity favorable to a larger and more j appropriate location for a new Cemetery I are requested to meet at the Grand Jury ! Boom, on Saturday evening next, at ~k o'- ; clock, to take measures to accomplish the j purpose. EQL. An alarm of Fire, oil Tuesday ! morning at lour o'clock, aroused our citi-1 /.ens. The alarm was caused by the burn- j lug ola quantity of straw, covering ice in i the yard west ol the Ward House. A few j pails ol water sufficed to put out the fire, j How the straw took fire is a mystery. NEW TOBACCO AND CIGAR STORE. — Messrs. REVIVALS. —Much religious interest is being manifested in Tioga county. At | Blossburg, something over two weeks since, I a protracted meeting was inaugurated by Elder J.G . Crane, assisted by Elders Nor thrnp and Reynolds. About sixteen souls, ■ several ol them the heads of families, eon -1 fessed conversion or reclamation. The Bap | tist congregation proposed, through their | Pastor, Rev. Mr. Reynolds, a series of Union j meetings, using the two houses of worship alternately. Rev. Mr. Barnes, of Coining, was invited to participate, and came. Up | to Monday evening last over forty individ uals are counted as converted or reclaimed. The interest continues unabated, and seems to deepen. The protracted effort at Del mar , ne;ir Charleston, some twelve miles Irom Blossburg, closed about three weeks since, with forty hopeful conversions. At the "Block House" many new converts are repot ted, some placing the number as high as a hundred souls. The Troy Gazette speaks with uncalled-for harshness of the action of Judge STREETER, for fixing the amount of bail in the Troy burglary case, at SIO,OOO. However persons may differ in their judg ment as to the sufficiency of the bail requir ed, no one will question the uprightness of Judge STEEETEK'S motives. Being fully cognizant of all the circumstances connect ed with the case, it is fair to presume that he settled upon such an amount as to him seemed proper. Bail has not been procur ed and the parties charged with the crime, are still confined in jail. Special Notices. Down with Horse Thieves ! Get your Horses Insured! GREAT SECRET EXPOSED ! Yielded at last to th • wishes of friends. Time and again has the following proposition been made ; but never exposed until the present. FIVE YEARS AX UNREVEALED SE i- CRET! NERVE YOURSELF FOR TIIEjsnOCK 1 First proposition to be made public : FRIEND NELSON First, I would say, ac cording to the best calculations, in the Uor. ugh of Towanda, there is sold yearly one hundred thousand dollars worth of Boots and Shoes, mostly slop work of the most iuierior kind, and t lie people generally are sick of tit. And, now 1 say to your again, as I have before, en large your Store make it neat and commodious, and keep a good stock ol Boots and Shoes, and you shall be sustained. Most oi the people be gin to feel a little above buying their boots and shoes at Dry Goods Stores; it looks verdant and outlandish, u'e do not ask to make y.-ur goods if it is not convenient. The •facilities in some other localities, where a better th ice of stock and.workmen can be had, may be still bet ter And yon have always been in"the badness and better understand this one point and im purtant branch u; the Merchant's art, titan those that deal in Silks and Muslins, and Ibey. 1 believe, would he glad to let this business go where it belongs ; that they have done it hereto fore to accomodate the people ; i do believe if you would open a firs'-class Shoe Store the people would not'go to Dry Goods Stores to buy Shoes any more Uua they would to Drug Stores for Oats. Stop, stop,! what are you talking about ? has not any one the right t j sell what he pleases'! it may he, bunot injustice is it right in so large • place as this, where practical men are engaged wholly in this b isiness. It has been given up iu every other place, and according to custom it v, iii be here. Two thousand five hundred propositions madeirom customers, is, to bring more of the same kind oi Boots and Shoes you brought with you when you came in town seven years ago. 1 have neve seen a good Shoe before uor since, is the language o' them all at the same time, liaise thy feet gently And think it so queer That the Boots 1 sold then Should wear them a year. I now yield to the above propositions, and have promised to sell Twenty-five Thousand Dollars worth of !iis Boots and Shoes i: lie would make them as good as those 1 brought here seveu •years ago. and the answer is I will 1 1 will 1 Well friends, yonr proposition made And I've consented to the trade, so I will sell yon Shoes both strong and neat, To ploa-e the taste and suit the feet. 1 have I.ndies,' Misses', Boys' and Mens'.J From iancy down to coarse bi ogives. Come one and all, do as yon agree, And buy your Boots and Shoes of me. Come! Come! I say, where you can find Boots exactly to yjurraind ; A d it you was never here before, You'll find it is the very Store, Come ladies, Gents, i have goods for all. Buy your goods ol me this Fall, And whin Spring comes 1 will the cry,' " At 1,. C. NELSON'S I will buy!" There is one thing more I'll say to you, 1 'm in the old Store made over now ; it any read, and stand the shock. My place you'll find joins Patton's Block. GENTS' CALF BOOTS AT BARGAINS.
