ATTEMPT AT MURDER IN BINGHAMTON. —Last
o'tt, Friday, August 24, says the Binghamton
™d of August 25, a person entered the house
Lev. Mr. PI.ATT, of this village, through the
slnr-way, anil proceeded directly to the room of
: "ITA O'CONNOR, the hired girl. The glrHiad
'tired, but was not yet asleep, and on hearing her
Uh r open, inquired who was there. At that iu
nt she was struck a hc-avy blow in the chest,
.tiled loudly for help, and the would-be as
mum, going out through the back kitchen.
. roenring a light, Mr. PLATT'S ax was found in
hall, just outside of the girl's bedroom door,
if dropped by the criminal in his hurry to get
■'ity. Various circumstances pointed to a colored
>" by the name of Eli Miller as the perpetrator of
offence, and on the complaint of Uonora O'-
Uiuuor, a warrant was issued by Justice Durkee,
"■'"l placed in the hands of Chief of Police Flynn,
J arrested Miller, and he is now in jail, awaiting
lamination.
Mr. l'latt s family arc absent, nnd the premises
-re in charge ot a Mr. Stoddard. He was awaken
, by the noise, but on going to the room from
whence the screams issued, the man had fled.
' "'■re is every reason to think that he intended to '
kill Uonora. This Miller had been at work for
Mr. l'latt, but was discearged just after Mr. P.
• tit away, and he knew he was not at home.
The following notice of our village
■ lrom the If nvcrit/ Advocate. It contains too
•h truth to be complimentary, and we commend
' t the careful perusal of our borough fathers :
An article in the Athens liqmblican of best
on the. wealth and general prosperity of To
* 'a, reminds ns that we recently paid a brief
Dit to that village. We can vouch" for its being
' ItLy, and blest with a good share of individual
j ' uprise ; but we think the village, iu its corpor
* 'pacity, will not bear the very flattering no
sii is accustomed to receive. Towanda has a
; ••t'-r number of first-class residences than any
"iL.-r place of its size within the limits of onr ac
'-aiutance, and the business portion of the town
"ill up in a highly creditable manner. All
j" 1 ' ' ! °wcver, is the result of that individual en
r -pttse fur which she is deservedly noted : but
iti crossings, side-walks, gutters, <kc.,
my disgraceful to that otherwise beautiful
i , 1 ' j ey show a bad administration of its
M'"rate atlairs—show, at least, such indifference
1 mltnesß, order and good taste, as would re
discredit on any village of wealth. Pave-
KLi 5'i S ° ca^ e d, along the main thoroughfare,
• a have always been a stumbling block to pe
destrians, remain to-day in the same condition
they were thirty years ago, when the stones were
j pitched into their awkward positions. The back
streets and suburbs are almost entirely destitute
| of side-walks, and all are lumbered up with fire
wood, posts, lumber and rubbish generally. We
think tie/ in this respect we never saw a more un
tidy villuge. We have no taste for peering into
other people H tiflairs—oll the contrary, we believe
in the doctrine of every man's keeping his own
door-yard clean ; but we could not forego these
much needed remarks with reference to a village
in which we have heretofore resided, and in which
we still feel much interest. We have probably al
ready provoked a retort, but good will come of
what we have said, even at that; and still more
good would be manifest if the journals of that vil
lage would do their duty, and point out these evils
to their people, and the derilection of their au
thorities in not correcting them.

DR. COULTER, " Medical Electrician," of
Philadelphia, has taken rooms on the first fioor of
the "Means House," where he will remain a few
weeks, devoting his time to the treatment and
CHring of chronic diseases by his new system of
" Medical Electricity." This practice, after prac
tical proofs of its superiority as a curative agent,
lias been adopted iu the Hospitals of Paris, and
London, and after being left for a time in this i
country in the hands of the inexperienced in its
application, and ignorant of its laws, has been
adopted by some of the most eminent of the Med- I

ballled all medicine, yield to Medical Electricity.

NICHOLS—On the 20th of June, 1800, Earl Nich
ols, in the 60th year of his age, having reached
his 08th year on the 18th of April last.
Mr. N. came to Burlington township when only
four years old, and lived there until the day of his
death. He took possession of the farm on which
he died, and where he is now buried, 30 years ago,
and when there was a continuous wilderness from
his rude habitation to Towanda— save one small
clearing of a few acres—a distance of nine miles.
By his prudence, and great industry, Mr. Nichols
acquired a competence for his declining years, and
brought into a high state of cultivation, not only
a beautiful home, but one of the best farms in
Bradford county, and where, when he commenced,
neither a competence or a good farm, seemed pos
sible to human energy or foresight. Now howev
er, the traveller on the Berwick and Elmira Turn
pike, who passes the old home of the late Earl
Nichols, sees with gladdened eyes, the many,
smooth, fertile acres he brought to sun-sliine and
usefulness, and where his widow, who was also
born and has always lived in Burlington township,
now resides, in comfort, patiently and hopefully
awaiting the Master's call. Mr. Nichols having
thus spent his life in subduing the rugged forests,
and preparing for the enjoyment ol his children,
(his two sons, worthy and highly esteemed men
now possessing the farm,) and creating property
for the community to tax in perpduwni. This
quiet, patient and heroic worker, earned, and de
serves fame more justly than the conquering hero.
For while he has been a benefactor to his race, the
successful soldier is at best but a scourge ; and
how far above the mere politician, the speculator
and trader, who deal in millions, does the result
of Mr. N's laborious and humble life place him.
While he worked for himself and family, he work
ed for the public good, and while civil government
lasts it will derive benefit from his labor.
