As many of our readers are aware,
11 rig. -t itui. H. J. MADII.I.. was severely wounded in ,
the hip i m Sunday. April 2, near the Boydtown i
Road, while gallantly leading his brigade in a :
ehaige upon the enemy. He was carried on a |
-tre teller some 15 or 18 miles to the railroad near
Petersburg, and was placed in a car and brought j
taTity Point. He was much reduced by loss of
1.l nl. fatigue and sickness. His brother. Dr. \V. j
A M,m <ii.i, who is in service, found him in hospi
tal on Thursday or Friday, of the same week, and
wlitis that "the wound is severe, but that he is
doing well."
Dr. Titos. F. Ma dili., on his way to City Point,
writes from Washington on the 11th inst., that !
"he had just received a dispatch from City Point, j
train Medical Director, G. B. PARKER, saying that 1
brigadier H. J. MAIMLL is here and doing well."
'1 he friends of the gallant General will be glad i
to learn the wound is not dangerous, and that he I
i- likely to recover and will soon be with us again, j
Full four years he has been in active service— j
first as Major of the 6th Pennsylvania Reserves, 1
then as Colonel of the 141 st Regiment, P. V., and
tii. illy being promoted to the rank of Brevet-Brig
•oib r-Gcneral, he was assigned to the command of ;
u.. '.'.il Brigade, Ist Division, 2d Corps, which com- !
in ind T -held at the time he was wounded. Al-i
tl tgh !: lias passed through some twenty battles j
and ha- 1.1 a half a score of horses shot under !
hint, this is the first wound he ever received.

lb".. JAMES TRACY HALE. —Died after a J
- rt liln-ss, ol' typhoid fever, at Bellefonte, on!
fie n: uning of the 7th. Eldest son of the late R.
He dtv'd of this county.
■' id.'e HALE was born in 1810, and raised within
|"A iii .'s of Towanda. He was amiable in dispo
sition and ambitions of literary improvement, from
sis yint h up. His father died in 1825, when he'
w..s only fifteen years old. When very young he was I
employed us a clerk in the Recorder's office, and j
fio n, in the Prothouotary's office, of this county. I
Hi studied law. partly with his brother-in-law, Gen. !
T itton, and partly with his Uncle E. W. Hale Esq.
of I,ev.'istov.!i. Tn 1832. he was admitted to the
.sir iii Miffin county ; where he practiced several '
years, at the head of his profession. He married a j
ughttr .I Judge ill sioN', of tlit. Supreme Court,
!. 1 changed his residi ncc from Ecwistown to Bell- '
el..lite, where his father-in-law resided, and after!
practicing, there, a.short time, he was ftpjmiuted
in KM, Presiding Judge of that judicial district,
bi ls.'s. he was elected to Congress-—re-elected in
I S ' D, ami again re-elected in 1862, and consequent
ly served, in that body, six years. During his last
Gnu, he was Chairman of the Committee on Claims ;
fin'duties of which onerous, difficult, und respon
sible jiusitinii lie discharged with integrity and
ability. He was conservative in his political views
'"1 presented and urged upon Congress the pas
r_!< of compromise resolutions soon after the re
■ ■ !inii broke out, and had the enviable respect of
parties in that body.
I " lineage of Judge HALE has been traced to
• MATUEW HALE Chief Justice of the Kings Bench
bnglaud : ami through life he made that great
I good man his exemplar : and, like his illustri
prototype, he was an upright Judge, a learned
'""I " pure christian. He and Hon. Gideon
t.s. See. of the Navy, were full Cousins, and he
~ s.lso related, bv family affinity, to Gov. Ci'KTIN,
' 'his State.
1 L'c HALE had acquired an ample fortune and
■ from public life ; but still pursued tlieprac
"i his favorite profession ; and, but a few davs
• f" r < his death, he made a speech, in Court, of
■ hours ; which was marked by extraordinary
ability.
.y ,1 1 l '" captivations of professional and
''b*. his attachment to the mansion resi
''. v his frequent family visits to it ; which
, '-'Ldly welcomed by its inmates, and by all
'Da.ihitants in its vicinity, who found in him a
' ll patri inizing friend to their interests and ob
' " ,s of publi e utility,
j i '" l> """ 'liber of long, and high standing in
•l' N <ipal Church : and in a spirit of commen-
i liable generosity, he offered to contribute a thous-
and dollars towards the erection of a new house of
worship in this place. He was affable in mannets
and entertaining in conversation ; and, had he
been Divinely inspired, he could not have presen
! ted a greater equanimity of temperament through
the even tenor of his life, for it was never known
to be ruffled by that debasing passion, wbicb, in
biblical phrase, "resteth in the bosom of fools."
He was in fact a rare example of enviable purity,
in all the relations, and walks of life, and while the
) finger of exulting fame was proudly pointing to high
! er earthly honors, yet in store for him, the grim
messenger of death claimed him as worthy of a purer
j and better world.
Although he has bequeathed to posterity a rich
legacy, in the unfading brightness of his moral and
religious example, yet his sudden withdrawal from
the theatre of life, has left a wide and gloomy
j chasm, from which the mourning echoes of pub
lic regret and family grief will long be heard.

A MELANCHOLY ACCIDENT. —We are deep
ly pained to state that the Rev. Frederick A. Par
i menter, youngest son of Elihn Parmenter, Esq.,
! of this village, was instantly killed at Elizabeth, N.
J., on Friday, March 7th. He attempted to step
on the cars while in motion, missed his footing,
and fell under the wheels and was literally torn
ito pieces. His remains were brought to Owego for
interement in Evergreen Cemetery on Tuesday last.
By this most heart rending dispensation, a young,
I promising pastor, has been cut off iu the very dew
| of his youth, and sorrow and bereavement brought
near to a happy and hopeful family circle. Young
. Mr. Parmenter received his primary education at
Owego Academy, where he was highly esteemed
for his social, moral and intellectual qualities. At
| College, and at the Theological Seminary, he stood
among the first in his clases. While but a boy he
wrote poetry of no inferior quality, and as a wri
ter he was highly esteemed. Doubtless his obitu
| ary will be written by some pen more eloquent
j than ours. Still we cannot refrain from speaking
1 of him as a much esteemed friend, a pious, devo
ted eminently gifted minister of the Gospel. Tru
ly, " God moves iu a mysterious way" when a young
: man of his rare gifts, graces and qualifications is
| cut oft'in a moment, while many weak, worthless
; wicked are permitted to attain to three score years
and ten. But it is not for us to doubt the wisdom
and Goodness of God. Even in this most crusli
-1 ing bereavement we most conclude that "He doetli
all things well."— Oteego Time*.

It is an established fact that a large proportion of the
Garden Seeds sold in the country are worthless or nearly
so. The reason is obvious. Seeds are left by the owners
with merchants to sell on commission, often but a small
portion of them are sold, the remainder being returned,
repacked and sent out again the following year, and so
continuing until as a matter of course many ot the seeds
arc worthless. Iu order to get the best and most reli
able seeds I have bought a large stock of Robert Buisi.of
Philadelphia, a house whose reputation for selling fresh
and pure seeds is not surpassed by any in the country ;
and who never send out any seeds on * commission, and
consequently not liable to accumulate old stock.
1 think a little reflection will convince any one of the
advantage of purchasing these seeds. I have many var
ieties not to be lound any where els ein town. Also
: Rutabaga, Beet and Carrot seed by the pound, and Peas
by the bushel.
