As many of our readers are aware,

Road, while gallantly leading his brigade in a :

Petersburg, and was placed in a car and brought j

tal on Thursday or Friday, of the same week, and

writes from Washington on the 11th inst., that !

train Medical Director, G. B. PARKER, saying that 1

sition and ambitions of literary improvement, from

T itton, and partly with his Uncle E. W. Hale Esq.
of I,ev.'istov.!i. Tn 1832. he was admitted to the

years, at the head of his profession. He married a j

the even tenor of his life, for it was never known
to be ruffled by that debasing passion, wbicb, in
biblical phrase, "resteth in the bosom of fools."
He was in fact a rare example of enviable purity,
in all the relations, and walks of life, and while the
) finger of exulting fame was proudly pointing to high
! er earthly honors, yet in store for him, the grim
messenger of death claimed him as worthy of a purer
j and better world.
Although he has bequeathed to posterity a rich
legacy, in the unfading brightness of his moral and
religious example, yet his sudden withdrawal from
the theatre of life, has left a wide and gloomy
j chasm, from which the mourning echoes of pub
lic regret and family grief will long be heard.

A MELANCHOLY ACCIDENT. —We are deep
ly pained to state that the Rev. Frederick A. Par
i menter, youngest son of Elihn Parmenter, Esq.,
! of this village, was instantly killed at Elizabeth, N.
J., on Friday, March 7th. He attempted to step
on the cars while in motion, missed his footing,
and fell under the wheels and was literally torn
ito pieces. His remains were brought to Owego for
interement in Evergreen Cemetery on Tuesday last.
By this most heart rending dispensation, a young,
I promising pastor, has been cut off iu the very dew
| of his youth, and sorrow and bereavement brought
near to a happy and hopeful family circle. Young
. Mr. Parmenter received his primary education at
Owego Academy, where he was highly esteemed
for his social, moral and intellectual qualities. At
| College, and at the Theological Seminary, he stood
among the first in his clases. While but a boy he
wrote poetry of no inferior quality, and as a wri
ter he was highly esteemed. Doubtless his obitu
| ary will be written by some pen more eloquent
j than ours. Still we cannot refrain from speaking
1 of him as a much esteemed friend, a pious, devo
ted eminently gifted minister of the Gospel. Tru
ly, " God moves iu a mysterious way" when a young
: man of his rare gifts, graces and qualifications is
| cut oft'in a moment, while many weak, worthless
; wicked are permitted to attain to three score years
and ten. But it is not for us to doubt the wisdom
and Goodness of God. Even in this most crusli
-1 ing bereavement we most conclude that "He doetli

It is an established fact that a large proportion of the
Garden Seeds sold in the country are worthless or nearly
so. The reason is obvious. Seeds are left by the owners
with merchants to sell on commission, often but a small
portion of them are sold, the remainder being returned,
repacked and sent out again the following year, and so
continuing until as a matter of course many ot the seeds
arc worthless. Iu order to get the best and most reli
able seeds I have bought a large stock of Robert Buisi.of
Philadelphia, a house whose reputation for selling fresh
and pure seeds is not surpassed by any in the country ;
and who never send out any seeds on * commission, and
consequently not liable to accumulate old stock.
1 think a little reflection will convince any one of the
advantage of purchasing these seeds. I have many var
