"R '.'lOcmiicii :—You rCques'ed me to write you as "we got settled.'' I think I can safely say that morning of the 21st " we got settled," for men, and trains, were" stuck in the inutl" to that ex ■' febe's rejoiced and we mourned over our coin -suunlf.ninent of an attack upon the enemy's left. '• r> to march at I P. M , of the 2oth,were chang ers to move at 11 A.M., of the sime d .y. At " d hour our Brigade took the advance and :ous march of nine miles, arrived at a point ;v r lades above Falmouth on this side of the river, --•"bpc-d in the woods, within one mik of the rive, at - "k. The field and statr officers being without 'wre obliged to sleep upon the ground. At about > a rain storm set in and continued until late in '.v '.-i the 'Jiil. Upon the morning of the 2lst, we " r .ds, which the night before were hard and - 1 of pontoon, artillery, provision and ammunition ' ' ' were sunk from Id to 2d inches in thick,te " l'rom the proposed place of crossing to " M : t camp the roads were blocked up with wa could not be tuoved, and the rain stilt fall "iiing of the 21st our regiment, with oth "= 'ladt dto help haul these foundered wagons to " me l lafrnear the river. Passing and rc pass f ■ bie reads and fields, only served to mortarize ['*'"■ ;i! "' finally, through sheer inability of men I •-to wade, the bridge contract was abandoned ~ • ' succeeded in dragging some twenty pontoons to the top of the bluff. It was now near i ' c and the rebel force was rapidly coming j, I w-hich must have inevitably fallen into our 'he clemeuts prevented. The bluffs upon ••••*••* tiott b'jhr tlzsa upon our own, sf fording such a natural defence that the enemy had "ne glected increasing its strength, except by a small breast work which had been raised to defend a ford that exists at that point. By noon, however, the crests of their hills were covered with busy rebels digging all conceiva ble kinds of defences, so that when we were reluctantly obliged to postpone the advance, their position had lie come absolutely impregnable. In addition to other dif. Acuities, the river already considerably swollen, was r.. pidly raising. The next question was how to get " un. settled,"' or out of our bad Scrape. A large force was put at work buildiug corduroy roads, and by dint of i teams and men tugging and teamsters swearing, our i guns, timmunition and provision trains were again got i into a position ol safety. Many pontoons, however, still remain stuck along the road or piled up upon poles wait ing lor deliverance. A esterday our whole attaching force, consisting of a good part of the army, commenced a mmch back to the camps which they left, leaving behind only a sufficient guard for the foundered pontoons. We aui\cd in cainp at about dark last night, after enjoying a pleasant walk ot miles through mud and three nights sleep in the rain. We had been on short rations and our hoiscs upon no rations at all since noon of the day be fere, in consequence of our supply wagon being unable to reach us, so that we were in a fit condition to appre. ciate the fix in which we found our old catnp, which had teen sacked by stragglers. ***### Thus ends an attempt, which was well planned and so far as practicable was well executed, to outflank the rebels. I fear that Northern Rebels will again assault Burnside and quote effectually this as another instance of inefficiency on his part. That he did not succeed was no fault of his. A vast army was silently and suddenly | assembled within a few rods of the enemy without the j least disorder or confusion. How so great a number of men could march by so many different routes and arrive ! at a given point in such order go into Camp in the pre* 1 scribed place and jet make as little noise and let so lit tle be known of their arrival is, to me, a mystery. The plan ot attack exhibits generalship of no ordinary order, j "1 hat we failed Is attributable only to the elements. Yes terday morning the rebels had learned our condition and displayed upon the opposite shore a large board marked " Burnside stuck in the mud." They, of course, wilj rejoice with our northern friends at this new discomfiture, i V. hat our next move will be it is impossible to tell or even guess. If we have fair weather we may pitch at some other point, but my judgment is that the watchful ness and strength of.the enemy will be no increased as to make another effort from this point hazardous. Ayer's Sarsaparilla. ! \ COMPOUND REMEDY, in which we i J\. have labored to produce the most effectual altera i ive that can be made. It is a concentrated extract ef i Para Sarsaparilla, so combined with other subatauce* of still greater alteral : ve power as to afford au effective an tidote for the diseases Su*°sapnrii'.a is reputed to cure. It ' is believed that such a remedy i wanted by those who suffer from Strumous complaints, anil that obe which will i accomplish their cure must prove of immense service to this large class of our afflicted lellow citizens. llow cutu ! pleteiv this compound will do it has been proven by ex perinent on many of the worst cases to bo found of the i following complaints:— I SCROFULA. AND ScROFULOt'3 COMTL AINTS, F.RUrriOM , AND HRUPTIVK DfSKAHF.H, ULCEUS, PIMI'LSA, BLOTCH Sd, ! TUMORS, SALT RUKUM, SCALD HEAD, SYPHSLEB AXU ; SYPHILITIC AFFECTIONS,MERCURIAL DISEASE. DROPSY, i NEURALGIA OK TIC lioi i.OUREUX. DEBILITY, DYSPEPSIA AND INDIGESTION*, Kuysipkla)), ROSE I K ST. ANTHONY'S • FIRR, and indeed the w'nole class of complaints arising | from IMPURITY OF THE BLOOD. | This compound wi I Ire found a great promoter of i health, when taken in the spring, to expel the foul hu j mors which fester in the blood at that season of the year i By the timely expulsion of them many rankling disor ders are nipped in tne bud. Multitudes can by the aid ' of this remedy, spare themselves from the cudurance of ' foul eruptions and ulcerous sores, through which th# svstc-m will strive to rid itself of corruptions, if net as ' siiite dto do this through the natural channels of too : body by an alterative medicine. Cleanse out the vitiated ; blood whenever you find its impurities bnrstiug through the skin in pimples, eruptions, or sores ; cleanse it when , you find it is obstructed aud sluggish in the veins: i cleanse it whenever it is foul, and your feelings will tell you when. Kven where n<j particular disorder is felt, people enjoy better health, and live longer, tor cleansing the blood. Keep the blood healthy, and all is well ; but with this pabulum of life disordered, there can ho no lasting health. Sooner or later something must go wrong, and the great machinery of life is disordered or j overthrown. ! Sarsaparilla has, and deserves much, the reputatioa, lof accomplishing these ends. But the world has been : egregiously deceived by preparations of it, partly because the drug alone has not all the virtue that is claimed jor I it, but more because many preparations, pretending to La i concentrated extracts of it, contain but iiiUe of the vir* ! tue of Sarsaparilla, or any tiling el.-e. : During lute years the public have been misled by large oottles, pretending to give a quart ol Extract of bursa i parilla for one dollar. Most ot these have been frauds 1 upon the sick, for they not only contain little, ir any, i Sarsaparilla, but often" no curative properties whatever. I llence, bitter and painful disappointment has followed I the use of the various extracts of Sarsaparilla which I Hood the market, until t'ue name itsalf is justly despised, i and has become synonymous with imposition and cheat. ! Still we call this compound Sarsaparilla, and intend to i supply such a remedy as shall rescue the name from the i load of obloquy which rests upoh it. And we think wa • have ground for believing it lias virtues which are ir ! resistable by tlie ordinary run of the diseases it is inteud iedtocrue. In order to secure their complete eradica ' tion from the system, the remedy should be judiciously ! taken according to directions on the bottle. Prepared by Dr. J.C.
