RIOT AND LYNCHING. —A man named May hem) was lynched by a mob at Janesville, Wis consin, last week. It appears that the prison er had been found guilty of a most brutal mur der. but the law only prescribes imprisonment for iife. The Sheriff undertook to remove the pri.-oner from the Court' House to the Jail, but he with his posse had scarcely got out of the Court House when theory arose, " Ilanghim! hang him 1" The officers were then completely overpow ered by the crowd, the prisoner seized, a rope placed around his neck, and, notwithstanding his awful shrieks and prayers, they dragged him to a cluster of trees and hung him till dead. A band of three hundred men had been organized to execute the deed. The greatest excitement pervaded Rock River for over one hundred miles. ONE OF THE BOYS. —WM. HALE, a lad of 12 vears, son of SAMUEL DALE, of Trout Run, was riding through Lycoming Creek a short time dncc with another boy somewhat yonnger, but equally as large mounted behind him, when the horse stumbled and fell, precipitating both into the water, which at that point was of considera ble depth. The little hero took his companion on his back and struck for the shore, but was ( .impelled to swim some 80 yards before find ing a place to land his precious charge. That accomplished, he returned for his hat which had been lost in the -stsaggle and succeeded in. -eruritur it. On being asked by his father why lie went back into the water, he teplied, "why, father, it was my only hat."— Williamsport Press. The Markets, July 19.
