'IF g, THE 'PITTSBURG- DISPATCH, SUNDAY DECEMBER 4 1892. 8 TWO MAIN QUESTIONS To Be Settled by Democratic Leaders in the Sear Future. r KAUFMANN'S met mi HOLIDAY SALE ! AN EXTEA SESSIOS OF CONGRESS R 5250.000 WORTH OF SPECIAL CHRISTMAS NOVELTIES And Action on a Tariff Bill Aw the Things to Be Arranged. KEPUBL1CANS TO FORCE THE FORMER DM 1 i m 1 ,, truOM a BTArr coRBESPO'roiirr.l Wasittngto.k, Dec 3. As the week iloscs, Congressmen of both wings of the Capitol are dropping in rapidly, and not so much from any expression of individual Bpinioa, Irnt from that indefinable feeling rhich is "in the atmosphere," one accus tomed to that atmosphere is enabled to reach some conclusion in regard to the prob abilities of legislation this session and the chances of the calling of an extra session. These arc the two great questions to be lettled in the near prospect: Will the Senate agree to the tariff legMatioa ol the present Hoae, which is constituted for all practical purposes as the next Home will be, or will the Senate refuse to do so, and thereby nrobabIy compel a cxtra MMlon f the Fifty-third Congress? While individual Kepablican Senators ire slow to give an opinion, on account of the fact that too few of them haTe yet ar rived to warrant an attempt at even an in formal conference, it can be stated as ab so'utely as though formal action had been liad that uot one single proposition ot .the last session of the House now lod ged with the Senate, will receive favorable consider ation. Democrats to IJavo Fall Swing. The sentiment, so far as The Dispatch correspondent has been able to sound it, Is unanimous in support of the policy of per mitting or compelling the Democrat, to idle upon their boastful backs the entire burden of the responsibility of any change in the system now in vosue or levying du ties on foreign goods made by cheap foreign labor, the foreign manufacturer waiting Uh feverish eagerness the opportunity to bring them into successful competition with American labor. Senators Sherman, Hale, Hawley, irye and their strongest co-operators in the House, such as Reed, Lodge and Burrows, are fixed against any tanfl legislation by this Congress, and that may be accepted as a settlement of the whole question. As to the feeling among the Democrats in regard to an extra session, it is a constantly growing one that it cannot be avoided, even jf it nere desirable to do so. Some of the leaders still hold out against it Mavy are still non-committal, believing that the events of the next three months and the wisdom of thenew Presidentand his Cabinet should be permitted to dig out of the confu sion of ideas something definite. Too Much Talking Bcin; Done. There is a growing impression that many of the most prominent Democrats have been doing too much talking, if all the reports of their talks are to be relied upon as au thentic A forcible suggestion in thie. line lias been given to some ot the leaders which has come verv directly from tne gentleman vho is now engaged in duck shooting upon the eastern shore in that neck of woods ....... ...i;..iu .nilnrl "ft.-!!! water." bift Mbich is known to all natives as "Hoz Is- land." It is asserted that Mr. Cleveland pet the morning papers thereafter they are several evenings old, and that he has ex pressed much displeasure at thefreedom with which the supposed mott cautious men ot the party have appeared to declare for sr against an extra session. 8 Holiday Presents I OPERA GLASSES.
