UiMmt9. 'iFWSFis "vsess ww THE PITTSBURG DISPATCH, SATURDAY. DECEMBER 8, 1892. THE HEYDAY IS PAST. Business Takes a Less Favorable Tarn With Winter's Advent. THESE BIG FINANCIAL EVENTS Are the Monetary Conference, Gold Exports 'and Gould's Death. IBON H1BKET SOHEWIIAT WEAKER Kew Yobk, Dec. 2. K. G. Dnn & Ca's weekly review of trade says: The begin ning of gold exports in November and their expected continuance tends to trcak seic The- death of Mr. Gould and un favorable reports from the Monetary Con ference have somewhat aflected all specula tive markets. There are also some symp toms of diminished activity in business, and while manufacturers are generally occu pied with orders taken some time ago, there Is more complaint that new orders do not come forward as was expected. "While the volume of trade is still very large, it is not surprising that there should be somewhat less activity during the re mainder of the year, except in holiday lines., At the same time, there is general confidence that business early next year will be active and prosperous. A setback in speculation would be, by no means, an tmmlxed evil, but there aro no signs of dls- turbance at present, though the money mar kets are working a little closer. The State of the Iron Trade. At Pitubarg pig iron Is slightly weaker, with more eagerness to sell; but finished Iron is in good demand and all the mills fairly well employed. Trade in glass Is large In volume, thouzh at low prices. In gen eral, iron is weaker, with pressure to sell some Southern brands Copper lias sold largely at 12QliJic. and lead 1 lower. Coal Is ialrly acil e, and bituminous is scarce and dear. Breadstuff's have been stronger, which is natural in view ot the very low prices, tliouch Western receipts of wheat have been 500,000 Dushels in four days, against Atlantic exports of only 821,000 bushels. A rise of about a cent in whoat and oats and three-quarters in corn resulted from moder ate transactions, but ho?s and laid are slightly lower, and coffee declined a Quar ter. Cotton rose to 10 cents and reacted to 8 cents, sales again exceeding all records, being 2.5WI, bales lor the week. In drjjfoodsthe season has beenone of un precedented activity. A general boom and advance appears in cotton. Export of mer chandise irom New York rail $5,277,000 below last year's in November, and are proDably $10,000,000 lower at cotton ports for the same month, but even with this decrease the ex cess ol exports over imports must have been bear. IJoslne failures durins the last week number 269. compared with 209 last week. For the corresponding week of lust year, the figures were 30. Bradstreet's Notes the Weekly Features. UradtlreeCt will say: The feature of tho week -are the 'exceptionally favorable posi tion of the cotton mills North andSoutb; the bcavy advance in the price of print cloths, c to 4 1-lGc; the outlook for a (nrther ad vance to 4c per yard; increased buoyancy at the South, due to high prices for cotton, and the reaction in asfcing prices for some erodes of pig iron of 25e per ton in Northern , markets, and of 50c per ton of steel billets. ool is very quiet, with prices barely steady, and no speculative feeling in any di rection. Our Australian takings are only one half those of a j ear ago. Cotton has re acted somewhat from recent highest quota tions, due to realizing sales. Speculation for the past week was out- uardly dull, narrow and professional to a desree. Beneath the surface, however, Wall street was experiencing a greater agitation tlmn appears in tho limited fluctuations in i alues, w Inch constituted the actual trading for the greater portion of the time. The market has, in fact, simply been waiting for matters ot importance to develop. Jlr. Gould's illness and death ranked first in effect upon the sentiment of those opera tors who indulged in any activity. The prospect of gold shipments, possibly, on a large scale, has also been a prominent factor In the proceedings, Tvhile thenenc from tile Monetarv Conference was discussed with an Intel est that shows now keenly the street Bppreciates the benrihg of the financial and currency problems i-which conrront the country upon the ultimate course of values. Opinions of De Rothschild's Plan, It must, however, be noted that the Brus sels conference was influential mainly so far as it affected sentiment. It had been generally belie ed that the gathering wonld be negative of results. The fact that the only serious proposition for an interna tional agreement on the silver qnestlon came from the English delegation, and was Submitted by a member of tho liothscuild lamlly, was eminently calculated to create surprise, while thu utterances of the gentleman in question, indicating plainly that failure to accomplish an j thing at Brussels would be followed by danger to the finances of the world, tended to create an impression that the possibilities of a successful result had been underesti mated. The favorable impressions due to the circumstances were, however, not last In?. It was quickly realized that the De Roths child proposition, that Europe should pur chase S.CCO.OOO pounds of silver a year for five years. Involved no real concession on the ' part of England, while it would commit the United States lor that period to the continu ance of the purchase ol $34,000,000 worth of slh er. The action of the Chamber of Commerce indorsing the pamphlet to be issned in Spanish relative to the industries of West ern Pennsylvania, and notably Pittsburg, is of more importance than would appear at first glance. It is the first of the kind ever issned, and is intended for circulation in South America, Mexico, etc., with the view of attracting closer trade relations with South American countries. It is of special value at this time, in view of the approach ing "World's Fair, and tne object of the publication is to induce South American people to stop here en route to or from Chicago, to see one of the great continuous industrial expositions of the world Pitts burg. There will be thousands of Spanish Americans in this country during next year, and Mr. Charles Abel, who will translate the work into the Spanish, has visited South America twice in the interest of Pittsburg merchants and manufacturers, and has arranged lor the circulation of the pamphlet prior to the opening ot tne jc air. Hon. John F. Dravo, W. C Quincey, Esq., and Colonel T. P. Eoberts, of the special committee of the Chamber of Com merce, will have the oversight of the statis tics to be embodied in the work, which will be appropriately illustrated. It is certain ly a matter worthy of the attention of our business men, and it is to hoped they will respond to the request which will be made upon them, in order that it may not onjv be accurate and complete, but as interesting to prospective foreign customers as possi ble. lTKETJND'S COMMERCIAL PALACE. A Special Sale of Ladles', Misses' and Chll- dren's Cloaks. John J. Frennd. nrnnrietor of the "Com. mercial Palace," at the corner of South Seventeenth and Carbon streets, Soutlislde, has determined to sacrifice bis large stock of ladies', misses' and children's cloaks at half price to make room for holiday voods. The stock must go and the wonderful bar gains offered at this special sale will doubt less soon dispose of it and that, too, to the advantage of Mr. Fround's many customers on both sides of the river. Tho reduction to half the usual price is a gcnulno one, and is made solely for the purpose of providing room for new goods and not because of any defect in the garments. The "Commercial Palace," one of the best known and most popnlarlrygoods empor iums in tho city, is a busy place these days, and John J. Freund, the genial proprietor, is one of the busiest merchants in the city. The commodious building is completely filled with new iroods. The cloak depart ment is especially inviting. The large stock of ladies' and misses' Jackets, cloaks and wraps has been selected with great care. Fur capes, muffs and all kinds of fur trim mings are there, too, in grand variety, Mr. Freund is a tireless worker, and his knowl edge of business has been acquired through years of experience. Ue appreciates the lactthat tlie public buys where reliable foods are sold at fair prices, and those deal ng with Mr. Freund can bear testimony that his margin or profit is extremely low on every article he sells. The business of the "Commercial Palace" has steadily grown, and to-day it is one of the most substantial mercantile houses in Pennsylvania. Christmas at Home.
