SHE EETIHBtrRG DISPATCH, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 189a TEETHE SOT WANTED. Hon. W. A. Stone Speaks Upon Un restricted Immigration. NO MOfifi fOEEIGNEES KEEDED. H Etoirs the Errors of Overcrowding the United States. BIS WORDS CAUSE GREAT ENTHUSIASM Considerable enthusiasm was evinced by the University boys yesterday afternoon when Hon. W. A. Stone appeared to de liver a lecture on "The Evils of Unrestrict ed Immigration." Dr. Holland, who ac companied Congressman Stone to the chapel, introduced the lecturer. Congressman Stone opened with a brief explanation of how this country was settled and where the new people secured their laws. "You remember the Declaration of Independence," continued the speaker, "which established our freedom. After this there came a period in which we tried to govern ourselves. Two evils were .then born. They were State sovereignty and slavery. Seventy-seven years passed with out any marked change when we had a civil war. The country finally came out of this triumphant with our Government es tablished and the abolition of slavery. TVe then extended an invitation to everyone to locate here. This was accepted about 1870, and from that time until 1S90 about ten or twelve million people came here. "We wel comed gladly all who came. Too Much of a Good Thing. "There is such a thing as getting too much of a good thine. It is like well- cooked porridge, with too much salt. It is spoilt. As long a we were getting people from England, Ireland, Scotland, "Wales and Germany we were content, but now we have opened our doors so wide that every one can come in, and many of these are try ing to influence our old custom, and laws. Suppose, tor instance, 100 new students came into tbe "Western University and 60 of these were Chinese, how Ions; would it be before all were Chinese? My idea is a re stricted immigration, not a cessation. Dur ing the cholera scare last summer there was a cessation ot immigration, but now that is over, tbe influx continues at the rate of 00,000 every month. "For the month of April 90,000 people came into this country, and no one made any inquiries. The danger from this is that our nationality will be influenced by these people." Throughout his entire address Congress man Stone furnished arguments and sta tistics and ci'ed examples showing how the American people were, suffering from this great influx of foreign emigrants. He said: "Lsbor is governed by the same law of supply and demand as flour, pork and other commodities. It manufacturers make more pig iron than there is a demand for the price goes down. If there U more labor in the country than there is any need for the price also goes down. The law does not protect labor." They Nei er "Would Be Missed. Congressman Stone also spoke of the restriction placed upon Chinese emigration, and hinted that it was a good thine, as the Chinese Gov ernment could easily send over 6,000, O00 of their people here who would never be missed. He further said this country had sufficient work for its own people at good wages, but it could not supply the en tire world with employment. The balance of the lecturer's remarks were devoted to the increased percentage of foreigners who oted in the different States and cities and to the custom of foreign associations en couraging emigration to this country. In connection with this he said in olden times when the population became too large in several European countries war was de clared, but now the surplus, often consist ing of paupers, is sent here. The speaker closed nis remarks by saying: "I want the boys of this institution to give this matter thought. Discuss it Talk of it in your debating societies. You are all young peo ple and the rising generation must in a short time take the places of our prominent lawyers and doctors as well as our clergy men, senators and other heads of the Gov ernment. As the precedent has been es tablished of restricting the Chinese, von will have to grapple with the great problem of restricting the other nations." CHANGE UNDERWEAR.
