. 2r ? THE PITTSBUKG DISPATCH, 'FRIDAT, NOVEMBER 11, 1892. 11 STRENGTH IN STOCKS On Good Buying by Professionals and Commission Houses, BAILROAD SHARKS ADVANCE And Some of the Industrials Kecoxer the Hecsnt Losses. BKISK DEMAND FOE KAILWAI BONDS Kew Tokk, Kov. ia The hesitancy which characterized operations at the Stock Exchange yesterday disappeared entirely this morning and the market for securities developed great strength. Stocks were particularly firm under liberal purchases, both for the lone and short accounts, and a ' notable feature of the dealings was the de mand for industrial shares. In addition to liberal buying by the professionals to-day the commission houses reported an in creased number of orders for out ot town ac count, both tor railroad as well as indus trial shares. The former, improved i to 1 per cent, and St. Paul led all others both in point of activity and strength. The Indus trials advanced i to 1i per cent, the latter in Distilling and Cattle Feeding, which was also the most active stock of the day. Chicago Gas camo next. Western Union advanced ?, but lost most of the Improvement alter the announcement was made that the dlrectois had declaioda 11) per cent scrip dividend. The general market. closed strong at or near the top flgu 1 es of the da v. -.There was a brisk inquiry for railroad bonds throughout the day and the market was strons. The deallmrs ngsregatod $1,783-, 000. The low-priced is-sues were moot promi nent in the dealing--. Green Uay and Wino na incomes bold up 2g. Tlie London market did nothing here at the opening and prices here weie strong throughout the day. A considerable shore interest, it .-eeuis, lial crept into the market yesteidavand during the aiternoon they coveted up most ol their outstanding con tract. The bull manipulator:! have the market well in hand ana hud this snort In terest to ork on, but the general public re mains out ol Wall street and we hatdiy think that they will come In or the piesent, at least. A very Important meeting is In session to-day look ing ton settlement of the different di-putes in southwestern territory, but as rate aic In a very poor condition it will be vety diffi cult for them to come to any conclusion. The -Missouri Tactile seems to be the chief offender. We bclievo that the only way to get around this cutting of rates is to adopt the Gould system ol joint agencies and until this rjlan is put Into practice rates cannot be maintained. J. S. In the face of firmness in grain abioad, prices bcic ror nearly every article on the Board of Trade averaged lower to-day. There was some recovery near the close, but wheat, compared witu last night, is 34 lower. Corn is up Jc. Provisions were steady at a slight decline, except January lard, which was scarce and wanted. While the early transactions In wheat were at full yesteidav's flume a weak icel lng soon developed and there was a steady diop of nearly it cent, but a fraction of this was recovered later. English cables camo in a trifle higher and at the start domestic markets held their own very welL But out side ot this there was nothing very en couraging for the bulls and as prices did not go np holders bejan to lose confidence and sold out their holdincs. Some ot the laige opetntors openly took the selling side. A good deal or tho wheat bougnt on the bull wave yestt'i day was put on the market an d he ped to cause depression. Another very influential bear factor was Jiradstt ceft re port of tho available suppiv, which showed an increase during the week ot 5,t34,000 bush els 011 both coasts. Thero were pretty free offerings in tho pit and consideiable that was bought on-.es-terday's bulge was thrown overboard, while short selling was also qtiile a feature. There was a good demand lor December at the start from shoris, while May was more free ly offered and sold off slightly while the first named month advanced. The decline cov ered all lutures as the day advanced, there belug quite lree realizing which carried prices off a. At the declino the demand improved, and the carlots for to-morrow coming In light at 210 cars local traders vtarted in to buy which advanced the price a, but it did not hold, as offerings were considerably Increased; it rallied afterward and clo-ed with near futures JJo lower and May c higher. There was a good trade in December and May oats, and a weaker feeling prevailed most of the" day. Prices fluctuated freely within a c range, 'and the close was at a slight cam over yesterday. 1 he pi ovislon market was quiet and easier early In the session, but Armed up on the call and recovered its former bullish tone later In the day. ACTIYE AND STRONGER Westinghouse Airbrake and P. & B Traction Are Higher AND THE LIST GENERALLY-FIRM. Citizens Traction the Only Weak Spot in 'lie Street Railways. LOCAL AND GENERAL FINANCIAL NEWS Thursday, Nov. 10. The market for local securities to-day showed a decided improvement over yes terday, the general demand being excel lent and the tendency of most prices up ward. Philadelphia Company recovered from its Sveak spell of the previous day, Airbrake and P. & B. traction continued to advance, Union Switch and Signal, Duqucsne traction and P., A. & M. trac tion were firmer, and the character of the inquiry as indicative of higher prices in the near future, particularly ior the street railway shares mentioned and Union Switch and Signal. The weak spot of the list was Citizens traction. There appears to be no support ior the stock and the con tinued dribbling ot the shares upon the market has the effect of weakening the price. It is evidently considered too high for a 6 per cent dividend payor, especially as its future is not quite as satlslactorily do fined as it uvteht be. Business on 'Change covered P., A. & M. 11 action, Duquesne traction stock ana bonus, Citizens ti action, Philadelphia Company, Westinghouse Airbiake, Pleasant Valley Railway and People's Pipeage. P., A. & SI. traction sold at 41 and Duqucsne traction at 2S. both closing strong; Cltlren traction sold at 62, closing weak at 6102: Philadel phia sold at 22, closing steady to firm at 22 2 "1th the stock quoted at 222 alter the close; Duqucsne, traction oond sold at 101, with mora wantod at about tbe samo puce: Airbrake ld at 135, closing at 13413 and somo odd lots of Pleasant Valley Railway Mold at 25K. P. & B. traction opened at 24 sales, sold up to 21 at the last board, closed at 24 bid, sold at 24J24 after the close, and the final quotations M0re"2124J. The movement had the appearance 01 being nothing but a response to buying lor a turn by those who thought it whs too low. Stteet opinion at the close inclined to a belief in a inrtuer advance. Outsldo of the shares traded in, no feat uies were picented other than tho in creased firmness of Union Switch and Signal. Electric was neglected. The second piufcrred closed at 39 asked. The Crop Report. Washixqtox, Nov. 10. The average viold for corn in the seven States is as follows: Ohio, 29 bushels; Indiana, IS: Illinois, 23.8: Iowa, 28: MUsourl, 2S; Kansas, 23 3; Nebraska. 28.7. The nveiage yield of buckwheat is 14.1 bushels per acre. In New York, 14.7: Ponn sy lvania, 11.5; WIscon-in, 135: Iowa, 10.7. The yield of corn averages by the Novem ber returns is 224 bushels per ncre, and promises nn. asrgresato pioduct of a little moro than 1,600,000,010 bushels, while, in tho other great bread grain, wheat, the returns ot last month point to a product not exceed ing 500,000,000 bushels, ith a possibility or a shrinkage in tne spiing and a cettainty of light weight. In tho Northern States of the Atlantic coast tho crop ripened nell. In the cotton States it was injured by excessive moist me, causing rot nnd mold, and in some districts It was shortened by drought. In Ohio the crop is well cured, but chaffy ironi drying too rapidly. The yield is very uneven, ranging from 10 to 60 bushels per acre. The Indiana product is in good con dition on early planted areas and better than was expected on lato planting nnd in view or the lone con tinned drought. Theieis much complaint of Itchiness or ears and loos eness in tho cob In Illinois, and the samo variability in yield anil quality. Elsewhere it is well dried out and damaged by drought. Some was injured by being cut and shocked too early. Thero is much chally corn and the averaco weight will be lia-ht, Iowa corn has ripened well, heavy frosts being de layed till tbe last week of October, but lato planted is shrivelod from tne rapid drving of immature ears. Part of the crop Is sound and good and n portion very light. The low-lying areas wer damaged by the excessive moisture or the earlv summer. Wet weather In the spring nnd drought in the summer reduced quantity and qnallty In Missouri. The average in Kansas is reduced by the low yield of seed corn, which is, of course, included in the aggregate. Low or bottom lands yielded better than uplnnds, as the season was too dry for a largo part of the breadth. Scorching winds in June in jured tho crop materially, Nebraska corn early planted ripened thoroughly. Some of the latest planting was plowed up and sown to wheat. Variability or yield makes It dif ficultto fix a fair average. In low places tnere was some injury from frosts. Tho estimated yield of potatoes Is 62 bushels per acre. It is 82 In Maine, 63 in New York, 601n Pennsylvania, 62 in Michigan, 70 In Minnesota, 51 in Iowa, and 47 in Kansas. The crop is almost everywhere light. The tubers are small as a rule and rotting con siderably In New York and throughout the West. - The viold of tobacco Is lets than last year. the yield being reported at 622 pounds per acre of all kinds, against 748 last year. Business in local wholesale lines was more active to-day than yesterday, the de mand in some branches of trade being stim ulated by the lower temperature, but with the exceptions of advances in eggs and sweet potatoes and a firmer feeling in oats and hay the markets were unchanged as to prices. California prunes, CO and 95s, now due in New York, are quoted at 12J4C. Three-pound canned pumpkins, Baltimore shipment, at e quoted at uOc per dozen. According to the Now Orleans 'Sugar Boul sugar receipts thus lar have been larger thanduting the same i eiiod last year, and the piobabillty is that they will so continue, as prices stimulate shipments. The receiving and shipping of rice has boen going on lively. Tralnloads, leav ing here dally, weie brought to a standstill yesterday by the railroad company having toieiuso further shipments on account of the striko in New Orleans, but to-day ship ments commenced going to Lake Charles, and by the end of the week that place will be largely the gainer from shipments that should go to New Orleans."
