Hjdro-Xapnthol. Te Declares, Will Free the World of the Plasue. EESDLTS OP CAREFUL EXPERIMENTS Philadelphia, Sept 29. A communi cation appears in the current issue of the Jfafcsl S'ctet by Dr. David D. Stewart, clinical lectnrer on medicine in the Jeffer son Medical College, the importance of which cannot be over-estimated if the claims of the doctor and the resnlt of labo ratory experiments are substantiated by experimentation on man, and it would appear from the facts advanced that these claims are in a fair way to be realized. The cause of cholera has been proved to be a micro-organism, the comma spirillum discovered by Koch. This perm has its seat in the lower part of the small bowel. Any remedy that has a prompt e0ect on this germ in doses less than sufficient to injure the person taking it that can be car ried to this part unchanged, there to exert its effect, would probably invariably care cholera it used in time. A Itemed- Is Found at Last. Various drugs have been suggested as Epecifics. but none hate before iulfilled these conditions. From several Tea"' ex perience with hydro-nanhthol, a benzolo de rivative, in bacterial intestinal affections, Dr. Stewart reasoned that it might answer in cholera. It Iulfilled many of the condi tion. It was a powerful antiseptic, quite insoluble, harmless even in very farce doses, and, moreover, was related to car bolic acid, to which cholera germs are espe cially susceptible. Dr. Stewart, therefore, had experiments instituted in tbe laboratory of hygiene of the University of Pennsylvania to ascertain the efiect of h'ydro-naphthol on pure cult ures of the comma spirillum. These exper iments demonstrated beyond question that a proportion as nigh as 1 to 7,000 has an un doubted inhibiting effect on the develop ment of the comma spirillum, and that a proportion of about 1 to 2,000 (equal parts aqueous solution and culture medium) ex erted a promt germicidal action. Not a Very Large Dose Required. As one part to 7,000 equals about a grain to the pint, or to the avoirdupois pound, and as the contents of the small intestine, when the latter in its entire length is thor oughly distended, cannot amount to more than nine or ten pints, it would follow that under any condition but ten grains of hy-dro-naph'thol in solution would be required to render the entire small intestine anti septic against the comma spirillum, pre Tenting its development, while about 40 grains, nnder similar conditions, wonld dis infect the intestine, promptly killing any spirilla present. As a prophylactic against cholera when, from exposure, the disease seems imminent, hydro-naphthol should be taken in doses of from eight to ten grains four times daily lor three or four lave, and subsequently in from five to eight grain doses with the same frequency. This amount will proba bly at once exert an antiseptic effect, and at the end of 24 hours be germicidal. In early choleraic diarrhoea it should be used in quantities of ten grains hourly, or even halt hourly, until irom one to two drams have been taken. Here it may be, and, indeed, by choice shonld be, combined with an opiate." 0XLY SUSPECT CASES X0W. The Xew York State Board of Health Re ports on Cholera for the Honth. New York, Sept. 29. John Miller, 80 rears old, ot 225 West Twenty-ninth street, died yesterday at his home of a disease re sembling cholera. The body has been re moved to the Reception Hospital for exam ination. Sanitary Superintendent Edson has nnder investigation the case of Benja min Beaver, suspected of having cholera, reported from the Gouverneur Hospital last night. Beaver had been removed to the Reception Hospital. The Health Board officials are trying to learn on what steamship he came. The State Board of Health in the report for August says: "Of cholera to September 24, there were within the city limits of 2ew York eight sporadic esses and six deaths. The first occurred Septembers. 2so cases existing at the date mentioned. Twenty-two deaths occurred in the port, which is free from the disease at this issue." No Cholera. It Is sincerely hoped that the plague will not be epidemic In onr country, lint if It be comes so Klein's Silver Age and Duquesne Kye are reliable stimulants and doctors recommend tbetn. Modesty forbids that we shonld praise onr own property, but our friends say that it is a verv fine instrument, and use a Treat many high-sounding mnsical terms which 1 do not pretend to understand. The truth of the matter is we purchased the Siano entirely upon the recommendation of r. H. Kleber, because we knew his refuta tion for integrity and mnsical ability. A small-sized panic was created In the Sixth ward schoolhouie on Chartiers street, Allegheny, Monday. Little Minnie Graff, of McDonald way, was standing la a class room during the forenoon, when suddenly she dropped on the floor In an unconscious condition. Mrs. Kesbit, who has charge of the room, ran to the child's side and raised her np, but the little girl did not move. To all appearances she was dead. The other children ot the class became very ranch frightened. , .... Cold water w' applied to the girl's fore head, and after severe efforts on Mrs. Nes blt's part she was brought to. The child was extremely weak and was unable to stand after being revived. Upon examination It was found that tbe faintness was caused by the soreness of the child's arm. She was vaccinated four weeks ago, and her arm has been in bad condition since. When seen at her home yesterday after noon Mrs. Graff said Minnie had been very ill since Monday. Her arm is getting worse dally. THE OPEN D00B MISSION. Winter Evening Services About to Com menceThe Buildings Repaired. The Open Door Mission rooms at 54 Fourth avenue have undergone much needed repairs. The ceilings have been fixed, the walls papered, the auditorium fitted with chairs, so that now the place is ready for regular winter services. Meetings are held every Tuesday, Thursday and Sat urday evenings and afternoon and evening on Sundays. The original idea of this mis sion may "be credited to Eer. L M. Houser, who lives at Brnsbton. The people whom it is intended to benefit are the poor broken down and disgraced classes who come off the road, and in the bosom of the mission they find rest. Lunches at a penny will be served dnring the winter, and at this place the little boot black and newsboy find a warm cup of coffee. CABELESS with bad money. A Large Quantity Discovered In a BanklngM Firm's Waste Faper. A few days ago a bank in this city dis posed of some waste paper to a local firm. Scattered through it were a number of counterfeit bills amounting to 51,000. Bart of the money got into circulation and is causing United States Detective McSwee neylots of trouble searching for it. The firm that put the counterfeit bills in circulation claims it did so unintentionally. The bank, Mr. McSweeney says, violated the law in not turning the bogus bills over to the United States Treasury. The officers of tbe establishment say that its circulation was accidental. The detective claims that in any event the bank people should have stamped the money "counterfeit" in ac cordance with the law. Sirs. Black Dies Suddenly.
