rIJ2SE5SSl tpt yTSftv THE PITTSBURG ' rI8EA0B; -ERIDATr SEPTEMBER -SO, 1892. ) OLD SHARON CHURCH. A Bis Crowd of People Attends the Keventj-Fiflh Anniversary. OSS PASTOR FOR FIFTY TEARS. Hev. Mr. Gordon Takes an .Advanced Tiew of rreniillennarianism. A MINISTER DISSENTS IN A TRAIER Over 1,500 people gathered yesterday at Old Sharon Presbyterian Church, Alle gheny county, to celebrate its seventy-fifth anniversary. The people came from Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and all parts of Pennsyl vania; from Pittsburg, Allegheny, Clarion, Emleiten, Indiana, all the villages and towns of the neighborhood, and lrom the rural regions for miles around. Men and women were there who had not visited the old church for 30 or 40 years. The church is 2) miles from Stoop's Perry on the Pittsburg and Lake Erie Kail road. The drive is up the "narrows," a pass which rivals in crandeur and beauty the pass ot Glencoe or GlensariC The day was one of the loveliest of the year. Not a cloud fleeced the sky, and the foliage had donned its brightest hues. The church, re built in 1S6S, stands at the head ot the old graveyard and ironts a grove of chestnut, hickory, oak, walnut and locust trees. The woods were filled with wagons, carriages and buggies. A large crowd was assembled at a very early hour, and was entertained with the liveliest music by Toerge's Orchestra. Such music bad never before been heard within sound of that graveyard, but there was no rattle among the bones. The Sleeting House Jammed. The exercises of the day began at 11 o'clock, when the meeting bouse was at once crowded to excess. Chairs were placed in the aisles and people stood around the walls. Back of the pulpit huug fine pict ures of Dr. li Jennings, lor 52 years pas tor of the church, and his wile. The platform was decorated with plants and flowers. The preacher of the day was Rev. Mr. Gordon, pastor of an Bast End cbuich. He took lor his text, "Fear not little flock lor it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom." He expounded the doctrine of the pre millennanans as held by the most ad vanced advocates of their speculations. He held that the flock was a very small crowd, au inner circle, that would be en throned on an earthly kingdom with Jesus Christ and would rule over the Hebrews and other nations. As yet but little has been done. Of the 1,600,000,000 of the earth's population, not over 200,000,000 can be counted on as truly belonging to the flock. But they are to wait in hope as they will be literally kings and priests, ami if they supper with Christ they will literally reign with him and the kingdom to be "set up on this earth. This kingdom will not come gradually, but will oe set up quietly and very soon, as we are living in the last days. One Preacher Dissents. The sermon was a bold avowal of fear less championship in the most positive form ot the teachings ot the school to which Mr. Gordon belongs. The preacher who followed the sermon with prayer mildly expressed his dissent. At noou the immense congregation was treated to an abundance of refreshments. Tables hundreds of leet long were set un der the trees, and seats were provided for alL The people ate without regard to the price of chickens, butter and potatoes. After dinner speaking was resumed. The preacher ot the church, Bev. J. M. Mercer, made a rousing, eloquent, carefully pre pared speech, optimistic, a fine antidote to pessimism. He was followed by Dr. Bea com, Bevs. P. S. Jennings, Shrodes, Neely and others, the speeches being interspersed with music. A score of preachers were present, including Bev. W. S. P. Cochran, of Coraopolis, Bev. S. C. McClelland, of Pittsburg, Bevs. Moore, of Imperial, Gil son, of Pittsburg, Graham, ot Allegheny, Thompson, ot St Paul, and others. Lawyers and doctors were there by the dozen and several centlemen with political aspira tions. The people lingered until 6 o'clock and lelt the day was only too short At the Exposition. When you come to see the big show of fine liquors at Max Klein's then only have you seen the Exposition. Table d'hote dinner, 6 to 8 p. . Hotel Duquesne. Daintiest meal in the city for 75 cents.
