THE PITTSBURG DISPATCH, MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 39 1892. BUSINESS IS ACTIVE. The Yolunie Considerably Larger llian a Year igo. SUGAR IS SLIGHTLY LOWER, But the Market, Line Most Others, Favors Sellers. KO FORMER CHANGE IN PROVISIONS Saturday, Sept. 17. The local commercial .movement has not been so much under the spell caused by the cholera scare during the week as have in vestment and speculation in stocks and bonds and other lines where capital is rnled by fears and shadows. Staples have had a pretty free movement to all points em braced bv Pittsburg's arms of commerce, and the character of the operations, partic ularly on country account, has been such as to cause increased cheerfulness among sellers. Tne course of prices has been against buyers, though here and there they have obtained some slight advantages. Breadstufis have been steady, with a little tendency toward improvement; croccries have shown increased strength; provisions got through the week without another decline; dairy products were firmer, with cheese lusher; and with tho exceptions of fruits and vegetables, which were easy and lower, all other chances favoied tho selling side. The trade influences peculiar to this section, notably the iron business, were in better shape, and so far as inquiries wore extended lairly easy collections were reported. Accepting the bank exchanges as a barom eter, the volume of business for the week was 7.9 per cent larger than that of the cor responding week of 1S9L Crop Gossip. It is claimed that Italy will have to im port 2S.CO0.0OO bushels of wheat during the crop year. France will need about 45,000,000 bushels of foreign wheat to meet her requirements durinjr the harvest year. Tho EchoAgrtcole estimates tho crop at 291,000,000 bushels. The wheat crop of Manitoba and the Northwest Territories is estimated at 20,000, 100 bushels. Tho amount of corn raised in the North west is not larco, although the production in North Dakota, South Dakota and Minne sota aggro .ates 43,000,000 bushels. Tho corn if late, and it 1 feared if there is a killing frost it will materially injure the crop this year. The amount of corn to be destroyed in thee throe States, of course, is not im portant, but if the frnxt sweeps down over the enrn belt it will cause serious disaster. In 1SS1 the frost, the 10:h 11th and 12th of September, practically ruined the crop. It is acknowledged to be about two weeks be- iiinunnna, ana, generally speaking, it win take about October 1 to mature the crop, so that a frost ten days later than was seen in if"l may cause relatively as serious injury and disaster as it did then. Hejrardtng tne hop crop, the New York Commercial JiuUetm sayt: "Local interest is .t present centeriug chicflv upon the bar est in this countrv and Europe. Opinions ary to whether Now York and the Pacific oast w ill yield 149.000 bales and 110 000 bales espectiTely, as ha; been estimated ill some (unrters, and the outcome in Germany and mjjland is shrouded in the usual nnccr ainty. Operations are governed accord iclyj and both purchases iroin growers and lies to brewers are conducted in atnoro Ian ordinarilv cautious manner. Opera tons in 131 and cider growths are also on a odcrato scale and reflect decided partial v to extremely conservative movement, ntenor markets are likewise rather quiet, -ith 20 cents the top price on new cron, and 3ino sa.es made at lg"2 cents less. Latest .ondon advices noted a firmer market for hoice English hop, but indifferent iutercst a American stock.'1 Within the laM 10 days the publishers of .he Chicago Daily Trail? Bulletin have re reived advices trom about 3J0 points in the principal corn-growing states relative to the condition of that crop. The result as a whole is predicted on the ground that little damage will be sustained by frost, and ir no heavy frosts appear before September SO the crop will be practically sate. In Iowa the crop is in very good condition except in the northern part of the State. Indications point to 60 to 80 per cent of an average. In Nebraska the crop has improved and the yield will probably be 70 to 5 per cent of an average. In Kansas the reports are some what conflicting, and indicate a very irregu lar yield. In some sections it will equal last year and in other portions not over half a crop. In Kentucky the crop is nearly matured good acreage and fair yield. In Virginia and West Virginia the crop is irregular and backward not over one-half to three-ionrths of an average. In Ohio the crop is Backward and irregular in tho northern portion, rather good in tho central and southern portion; estimates vary from CO to M) per cent of last year. Reports from Michigan are not very favorable. Crop backward and not over two-thirds to three quarters or last year's yield. In Indiana the leports indicate a very irregular crop, with the best in the southern portion of theState. Itimatcs vary trom 50 to fO per cent of an average crop. In Illinois the prospects are rather favorable, and prospects indicate CO to SO per cent of a lull crop. In Missouri in dications point to 30 to SO per cent of an av erage crop, with the best reports from the w eatern portion of the State. The Sugar Situation. Jlonday morning local wholesale grocers will quote Drices fixed by the American Sugar Refining Company, and. as will be jioticed in the list of quotations, they are somewhat lower than the highest of the week, the basii bcinc 5.30c for granulated. President IIav-meyor, of the American Sugar Refining Company, says: "The margin between raw and refined sugar is less to-day than it lias been nt nny time since the cholera calamity. Local raw ngar specu lators and Cuban speculator have advanced raw sugar except beet, and the American consumer is naturally the sufferer. In no instance has prico of lefined been advanced beyond the corresponding advance in raw. The operation of the A. S. R. Co. will be to melt up its available raws and give the product to the American consumer at the tame difference as has prevailed. How long uppliei will last depends only upon what the several quarantine officers and health boards may determine. ,All the orders for Migar obtained lately are taken subject to Indefinite delay. A STRONG CLOSE In Wall Street Under the Influences of Easier Money and the Covering of Shorts -Industrials the Strongest Feat ures Railroad Bonds Still Dull and Featureless. New York, Sept 17. The operations in "Wall street to-day reflected the clearing up of accounts over the end of the week, and indicate that many operators who have been successful on the -short side have either oovered their contracts and withdrawn from the market or have taken the long aide for a turn. Many professionals who have been prouiinent in the decline were conspicuous in bidding stocks up, hut the forces at uicbcui, o u crouij uamuucu muvmcio n.ii- j- j .hi i nn vsij iauo vvigb3 uinuo ui ouusr i direction, though the continued covering of shorts gave the market a firm appearance and the final changes were generally small gains. To this result the bank statemont contributed materially, as it was the first one in many weeks which showed again in the surplus reservo', and even tnough this was accomplished by a heavy withdrawal of deposits, supplemented by a decrease in loans nearly as great, the feeling in Wall street is that there is more money to loan on stock collateral ana a distinctly easier tone was noted In the money market. The strong features were the industrials, especially Chicago Gas and Cordage, the first named being specially active. No other feature marked the dealings and the close was qulot and firm to strong at about the best flguros of the day. Railroad bonds were still dull, no Interest whatever attaching to the dealings, and while a fairly steady tone was maintained, the changes of note among the inactive Issues were generally losses. Among these Manitoba 2nds lost 2Jnt 11. The trans actions wore only $453,000 bonds and 116,118 listed and 18,386 unlisted stocks. Government bonds were dull and steady. Close of the list. U. Wider knowledge of better cooking processes means better health and com fort for everybody. Science can never do us better service than by the multiplication of the cooking schools which make healthful means and methods available for even the most modest home. The vegetable substitute for lard, is science's latest gift to the kitchens of the world. Every woman who has ever cooked a meal, knows that lard is disagreeable in use and unhealthy in its effects.
