i. THE PJTTSBTJRG- DISPATCH, MONDAY, AUGUST 22, 1892. DEIFT OF COMMERCE. Fair Sales of General Merchandise, Especially on Country Account. LATEST CEREAL CROP GOSSIP. Statistics of Interest to Grocers and Deal ers in Provisions and Fish. QUOTATIONS ON HAMS SEDUCED Saturday, Ang. 20. Measured by the exchanges the volume of trade this week wa a little more than 1 per cent larger than that ot last week and 12.7 per cent larger than that ot the correspond ing week of 1891. Tet business was not active in any line and in some the move ment bordered on stagnation. Altogether, however, sales of staples and t,easonable goods were fair, especially on interior ac count, and aside from outside labor trou bles, which caused more or less depression here, the influences exhibited an improving tendency. As a rple the course of prices favored sellers staple groceries, dairy products, breadstuffs and provisions ruling strong, with coflee, sugar, canned goods and dairy products stronger and higher; but towards tlio close tliero was a softenlnjr in jrrain and provisions In sympathy with the declines on the I hicao Board or Trade. Collections weio fair, excepting from sec tions whore cash trade and regular pay ments of bills have been restricted on ac count of the labor troubles. Gossip About the Cereals. Prime's latest: Dry, hot weather contin ues. Illinois in midst of drouth from 16 to 18 days' duration. Too dry to plow for Jail wheat: too dry for corn to fill well, Dut ex cellent for threshing oats, which is now beinp pushed very vigoiously. Keceipti of oats all over the country li?at, owing to seneial dis appointment iu outcome ot crop. Just re turned from Des Moines, Iowa. Opinion of representative larmers and jiraln men from all portions of State is this: Corn late and uneven evcrvwheio in State: made up little lost time, but still three weeks late compared with nveraire season: crop needs lain: lair supplies of old corn in farmers' hands, but no exces. O it crop vadly disappointing in Iowa. Very lisht in weiplit, and yield not much over half crop. Grain men w ho ought to be re ceiving at their country stations lanre re ceipts report receipts only nominal. North Dattota reports harvesting peneral lor early sown. Late sown not fit to cut fort hi ee wees. Yield not over two-thirds as Rood at- la-t year. Corn prospects li:;c'.y to no 'lurthcr reduced unless rain comes within a week. Karly spring heat harvest in lull bhibt and crop senerally tur.itng out dis appointingly. Look .or increased move ment of old corn or new oat.-, for pi eseut at least. The San Francisco Ctainmero'rt" Herald savs: For tiio hart est year of :S9I 92 the exports ot flour and wheat were t rjual to 20,837,000 bushels. They will be nothing less lor the present harvest year, most probably more t-ay 30,600,000 bushels. Still the million-ton limit may be reached." The jrrain ci ops or Manitoba are estimated a follows: Wheat. 19 300.000 bu.: oats, 14,370, 000 bu.: barley, 3,113.000 bn. The yield of wneat is placed at 22 bu. per acre, against 27 bn. in 1591: oats at 43 bu.. a?innst 14bu., and barley at 23 bu., against 35!- bu. Sncar ard Canned Goods. The weekly suRar circular of alesssrs. Willctt & Gray says: The total stock or sniar in four ports is 110,003 tons, against 153, D:: tens last week and 170 711 tons at the Mime time last year. The total stock in all the principal countries Is 97S.0I3 tons, against 977 753 tons last year. A firmer tendency in raw su.rar has prevailed through tho week, resulting in an advance of l-10c for centrifu gals and Jluscavadoes. The mo?t notable feature of the week, however, and the one having the greatest influence on tho future, is the somenhat remarkable impiovement taking place in the condition ot the beet ciops ot Europe. Mr. Licht's tests of the grots mg beets this week is cabled as allowing an average of 12 per cent of sugar contents, which is so much of in increase over a few weeks ago, and also .so much of jm increase over last J ear and the year pro vious, that with similar improvements In other countries the total beet! crops may easily exceed last year's by 100,000 tons or more. This is the first indication given of an increased teet crop this season. In fur ther confirmation of the more tavorablc outlook, the lubricants aie disponed to sell October shipment, new ciop, at IS-, per cwt. cost and freight, to America, against sales of Au,jut shipment, old crop, at 13s 7Jd. The remainder of the. Cuba crop is lirmly held, but will undoubtedly be disponed of betore new beet sugnrs become available. The demand for rcllncd sugar is large beyond piecedent for immediate consumption, espe cially lor granulated. Unlike last year the entire meltings go diiectlv into use, but the American Sugar Refining Company Is abund antly able to supply any increased demands that'may come and still keep prices so low that there can be no inducement or oppor tunity lor the importatir.ii of foreign sugars; sNo "the supply or German granulated is almost nothing during the changesof bounty between old crop and new. A moderate further advance is, however, not unlikely, J lending the arrival of the new crop ot raw cct sugars in October. The barrel factory at Xew Orleans was destroyed by fire, but will be immediately replaced, and in the meantime deliveries will be made in bags wituout interruption. Some advices indicate that tho Delaware tomato pack is backward, ana that opera tions this season will be backward If not on a smaller scale than thoso ot last year. Xew crop California evaporated apricots, in boxes, wci e sold a few days aaroatl5c. S:milar goods arc now held at"l5c. and for choice bieached in sacks HJ-Jc has'become a strictly inside price. What, Corn and lTovlslonn Close Either Weak or Barely Steady. CniCAOo, Aug. 2a With the exception of oats, the markets were all either very weak or barely steady. The article which con tinned weak to the end was wheat, but even that was a shade over its lowest point for the day. The labor trouble at Buffalo was the cliiel lactor in producing lower prices. Wheat opened In line with the general pre vailing weakness, and in tho course of the first hour's trading the price for September had declined to a point as low as had previ ously been st en since trading for that do-' .livery has been done this season. On July 12 September wheat Just touched 75c: since then it has sold as high as 80c, but until to day it had not -declined again to "SJic, A firm with foreign connections congratu lated themselves on being able to buy wheat on May delivery at S0c, or over 5 points at what IJeceiiiijer was selling for at the same time They figured thoactual cost of carrying the wheat for their foieign customers from December to May.i eckoning even at the pres ent low r.ueoi Interest, would amount to 7o per busheL The ioreign markets wcie dull at lower prices, according to the earlr cables. Liver pool was quoted at irom ( told decline. The receipts were nilll neavy at winter wheat markets. Minneapolis also reported liberal receipts of spring. The export clear ances from the four principal Atlantic ports weie close upon 900,000 bushels in wheat and flour. Bradstreet's report of the week's clearances of wheat and flour from both coasts was 3,750,000 bushels, against 4,14S,000 bushels last week and 5.761,000 bush els on the corresponding day of last year. Closing cables were weak, but tho market had already anticipated that and recovered some from tho low point. The corn market, considering the limpness in wheat, the disorganization In railroad transportation res-iltlng from the switch men's strike, and the absence of buying or ders from the outside, held up remarkably. There was a short period ot considerable weakness during the first half hour of the session, but there were lots of buyers who stood In wait for the offered chance. Trade was largely of a scalping character, but there was no period of actual dullness dur ing the short session. There was a good deal of talk about the backward crop and drought in various sections. Light showers fell this morning, however, in some portions of Kansas and Nebraska. Corn was sold in Buffalo for shipment, and this was reearded as an Indication that the strike was weaken ing. The provision market is still laboring un der a plnthora of long stuff in weak hands, which is coveted by men or larger means. There was another considerable break in pork early, hut the larger portion of the early loss was recovered beiore the close. Fluctuations in lard and ribs were less ma terial. Closing prices showMeclines in pork ot7cand about 2Kcin ribs. Laid closed without change irom Friday's resting prices. Hoi receipts were light, and some of the heavy traders were aetitig'as if satisfied with the amount of the recent decline. Lake freights were steady on the basis of 2c for corn to Buffalo. READING AND SUGAR m mm Furnish the Main Features of the Market, Though Jersey Central, Delaware and Hudson and General Electric Figure Conspicuously in the Movements The Close Heavy and Lower. New Tork, Aug. 20. About all there was ot the stock market to-day was Reading and Sugar, though a few material fluctua tions were seen in other stocks in which tho transactions' were much smaller than those shares. There was nothing at the opening to base a movement upon, the trading being of tho usual band-to-mouth order, with some covering of shorts by the local element, which served for some time to impart a firm temper to the dealings without material cliango in qnotations. Rumors that an extension of the strike on the Reading lines had occurred, however, were accompanied by a vigorous drive at that stoek, ana while the trailing in it ran up to large figures It yielded only I per cnt. At the same time, sugar, for no apparent reason, sold down from 113 to 111 nnd while Jersey Central dropped 1 per cent on tne sale of only 20 shares, Dela ware nnd Hudson wns advanced to the high est price of the week. A general drive took place in General Electiic which yielded 1 14 per cent, but the rest of the market was not only intensely dull but absolutely stag nant. , There was an effort to pick up a portion of the stocks put out in 'the fast lew minutes, and the weak stocks rallied partially, but generally closed lower, hile the general list displayed a heavy temper. Final changes aio generally lor inegular frac tions, but Reading is o'ffl per cent and Gon erhl Electrio V.. From Sproul & Co.'s market lotter: "A short market like to-day's gives little room fordeflniteconcluions. Nevertheless the developments during the two hours of business seemed to mnke it plainer that the bullish speculation that has been maintained for some time past is in imminent danger of giving way. The strike and its threatened extension, and, more thau anything, the serious leelingsaioused by the interruption which has been caused in the progress of giain shipping and other extremely im portant line3 of business, are of coursocal culalcd to create nervousness nnd check the artificial and manipulative methods that have been used to maintain tlio steadiness of prices. An nn.'avorable bank statement, showing a loss of over $3,000 000, increases the force of such sentiments, while there is still no assurance that the outflow of gold to Europe can be arrested. "An effort was made at the opening to keep up the manipulation in the industrials, but this was quickly abandoned when the weak tendencies ot the general list became ap parent. The pools in the industrials, in tact, still seem to be standing under their specialties, but the distiibqtion of these stocks on tho advances makes it qnlte pos sible that their position will become a diffi cult one. The nctive stoek of the day was Reading, whioh was affected by the threat ened strike of the locomotive firemen and was attacked by the bears on rumors that an adverse decision In the New Jersey suits would be handed down this afternoon."
