STAPLES GENERALLY ADVANCED. Current Gossip About tie Crops and Hems of Interest to Grocers. SO FTJETDEE CHANGE IN PEOYISIOKS Saturday, Aug. 13. An improved tone developed in local mercantile circles during the past week, but the volume of business was rather smalL Accepting the Clearing House figures as a barometer the trade movement was more than 6 per cent smaller than that of the previous week, though 19.5 per cent larger than that of the corresponding week of 189L Borne of the wholesalers continued to mourn the absence of a number of their cash cus tomers of Homestead and Braddock, and intimated that they were limiting credits so far as those particular sections were con cernsd, but they acknowledged that things looked brighter, and expressed the belief that trade on all accounts would gradually begin to broaden from tbe middle of August until tiie autumn movement was at its height. So far as prices were concerned their course favoro J sellers. Brcadstufls ranged higher: coffee advanced c per lb; sugar advanced 4jc; hog products were firm and active, with clear and dry salt sides c higher; choice creamery butter i3s elevated 3c per lb, with pro-pectsof a further advance, and Ohio cheese was c higher at the close. With respect to the ad vance in coffee it Is Intimated Dy good au thorities that it is not likely to be perma nent. The visible supply of coffee is nearly twice as large as a year ago this time, which influence must soon assert itself. The flrmnes a caused by a scarcity of spot masting grades. Tncre Is an abundance to arrive, however, and when it reaches the maiket a change in the tetnperof the mar ket fioin stiength to weakness is almost certain to be witnessed. At least, so says one of the oracles. Gossip bant the Crops. The past week has marked an absence of rains In nearly all regions of the West, says the Cincinnati Price Current Some local showers have given partial roller, but this lias occurred only in a limited degree. Tho result Is that it has been more severely pre judicial to the crowing corn than any pre vious week since the crop got under head way. It is true that much th larger propor tion of the area lias not s et suffered to a creat extent, but the needful advancement in development has had moie or less of a check, and in some portions of the Missouri Valler region the injury has become posi tive and permanent, while in many other localities the situation is bordering on con ditions ot Impairment which can only be averted by very prompt relief by rainfall. The general average condition of corn is not so high as previously. In the Northwest the later information concerning wheat is some what less favoraole than previously as a n hole. Severe hailstorms have occurred du ring the week over quite an extent of coun try . Eeturns relative to oats indicate disap pointment more frequently than otherwise, and coint to light weight of this grain. The Iiai'y Irade Bulletin, of Chicago, has compiled its monthly leport of the available stocks of breadstuff, including stocks as re poned by tne Liverpool Corn Trade 2?eict and domestic crop authorities. This report says: The aggregate supplies in the United States and Canada, in Europe and on passage August 1, was about 122,963 000 bushels au nt 132.Ojs.OO0 bushels oue month ago a decrease o 9,090,000 bushels. 1? he aggregate supplies on hand August 1, 1831, was 110,274,- 000 busnels, against 101 039,000 bushels on July 1 The supplies on hand on August 1 were a kh.ouu uusueis larger than one year ago. 1 he liguies on South Dakota's prospective jicld. given out ty competent men, are sitnpH astounding, ranging from 50,000,000 to 60.000 000 bushels ot wlieat, besides Immense quantities of oilier grains. The elevator ex pert places the yield at 60,000,000. while the Jliltvnukeo and St. Paul and Chicago and Northwestern Railway experts place it at 55,000.000 and 50,000,000 bushels respectively. A London special i-stimate places the Eus sian w liea crop or 1892 at 190,000,000 bushels, against 178,000,000 bushels last vear. The j leld of 1S90 w as plnced at 206.000,000 bushels end that oi 1SS9 at 301,000,000 bushels. Grocery trad- 5ote. The edge is off the canned tomato "boom." Full standard Jersey and Delaware goods were told at SOc In New York Friday, and more offered at the same price. About a week ago92c was realized. Samples have been leceived in the East of new packed Maryland cinned corn. The goods were thin and hard, and theretoro would not pass. Some lotsinLjhtbe nad at 90e lor prompt delivery. Latest reports irom the East state that the catch ot fl-.li suitable lor packing American quarter oil s-aidines has been very poor thus far. Fish run mostly to large sizes and aie not nbund'int. standaid canned corn Is a shade weaker. Spot goods similar to what realized $1 05 in B iltimore a snort time ago was picked up at SI 00. deliveied in New York. Evidently the market neeils uioie Western demand. Piimal maikets have been pretty well cleaned or cinned lobster in fl.it tins, and export demand Is said to be good lor both 1-pound and -pocnil tins. The lormerare jcalizinz $2 2 2 30 laid down in New York. The stock market to-day was of the usual half holiday char acter, little diipositiou to trade being ap parent, and that which was transacted being of the purely professional variety. No commission business of importance was done, and with all the larger operators even of local lame away from the street the operations were necessarily of the hand-to-mouth order and the fluctuations oi a corresponding width, 'lhe trad ers attacked the Grangers in the absence of any demand, while there was considerable liquidation in Northern Pacific preferred, though the pressure was not on all long stocks. Western Union was ihe one exception to the weakness In the general list, bnt Its advance was only a fraction. With the withdrawal of the early pressuie to sell the usual Intense dullness overspread the market, which closed only a Bhade bet ter than the lowest figures. EVERYTHING CLOSES STRONG. News Generally Bullish and Grain and Pro visions Advance. Chicago, Aug. 13. The weakness which had been the conspicuous feature of the market was lacking at the opening to-day, and the result of the day's trading Is that everything dealt in on the Board of Trade is higher than at the close yesterday. This fact is due in part to a natural reaction from tho recent declines and In part to the news of the day. The trading, however, was gen erally light. Wheat exhibited a conspicuous nndertone of strength, considering tbe volume of trading, which was small. This undertone was supported by the improvement mani fested in the cables, liberal exports from both coista, the bullish purport of Beer bohm's estimate or the world's wheat crop, the receipts here being under the estimates and reported heavy cold rains in ceitain sections of the Northwest. The opening sales exhibited an improvement of c over vesterday's closing prices and th fluctua tions during the whole of the session were confined to c range.the market closing with a gain of c. There were some sales at the opening at 77o lor September, but at the same time there were buyers at 78c, and a good deal changed hands at the latter and very little at the former price at the time referred to. The price held for a matter of hair an hour at 78o or better, and then took a dip to 77u, alter which It remained 'or a long time at 77e, with very little offered for sale und just as little wanted, closing fli m at 73c. The corn market was ve-v firm at the opening, September touching 53c in the first rush to fill the early orders. There were some sab") at the same time at 52c, but 52cand53c weie more generally current. The latter price was also the closing quota tion, but It was being offered at that. Tbe recovery was due to some uneasiness regard ing the approach of colder and porhaps Ireezimr weather In some or the more north ern counties wheie corn Is giown and.to the good demand whloh was reported from the cash crowd. The latter, more than the possibility of frost In the corn country in August, was the more probable explanation oi the change In sentiment which caused the mat Eet to wind up at about its highest point. The stock or coin in Chicago is said to be chieflv owned bv J. Bryant and he Is no bear on the' article, lie looks for 65c lor the couple million bushels or so of September corn which lie is said to have laid by. Oats fluctuated within nairow limits and close'I with a gain or c. Provisions openod active and strong with an ndvnnce ot 5c in pork, 212c in lard and5I0ciu ribs. Armour's brokers weie taking everything that was offered at the improved prices, and that cuused a com plete change in tho feeling of the crowd, which, until the support given by Armour, was inclined to be somewhat panicky. The small receipts of hogs as reported Irom the yards 8,(00 head was a contributory cir cumstance in ton In.: up trade at the start. Estimates oi 90,000 hogs for all of next w eek also had its influence in restoring con fidence. Theiewas some realizing at the advance, wlncli brought a reaction from the extieme reached on the first bulge, bnt in the end prices remained higher than nt the con esponding time yesterday bv 12l5c in pork, 5-0c in lard and 7c In rlb.
