m W$$pmw '7B'"T fn f ' THE PITTSBURG DISPATCH, MONDAY. AUGUST 8. 189a 7 . TRADE IS PICKING UP. At Least a Better Feeling Is Notice ablo in Mercantile Circles. CURRENT GOSSIP OK THE CROPS. Xotes of Interest to Dealers in Groceriei and Hor lroducts. LOCAL DEALERS ADTAKCB LAKD TE1CES SATURDAY, .Aug. & A more cheerful tone developed in the local commercial world during the week ending to-day, as the result of (1) the belief that the trouble at the Carnegie mills would ultimately be adjusted without any further serious disturbances of the peace, (2) that the crops would be such as to bring prosperity to the agricultural interests, and (3) that money would be easy throughout the remainder of the year. There was, however, no very noticeable degree of activity in any branch of trade, though dealers in groceries and hog products reported a free movement at firm prices. The dullness and monotony so long prevalent in tlio grain and feed trade were relieved somewhat by a slight revival in the demand, due in the main to a sharp tendency in prices: but among the produce commission men reports continued to note an unsatis'actorj- condition of af laira, both as to the volume of business and range of prices. In other mercantile lines a lair movement for the season was enjoyed, but notewoithy features, like angels' visits, w ere lew and far between. Crop Prospects. Crops promise to be very favorable, and a3 the crop outlook has mucli to do with the business of the country we can expect pros perity during the fall and winter. Wheat and corn are the only leading crops which have begun to move in large quantities but rice and cotton will soou follow. Although we are not likely to have too much, as last year, we wl 1 have enough w heat to supply our needs and plenty to spare for foreign consumption. Wo will nothaoas much comas last season. The cotton crop will be a short one owing to le duction in acreago and weather conditions, bur there i noth'ng in this to cause doleful lies as last year's enormous surplus proved more harmful than beneficial. The rice acreago is tlio largest ever planted, the sea son has been a splendid one and unless dis astrous storm come up within the next few weeks the ciop will be a magnificent one. A desire for profit from the bounty system has caused an increased sugar cane acieage anil a large crop is assured. Prime reports irom Illinois that it is still hot and dry. Eastern Kansas rcnorts corn losing giound, and needs rain badly. Southern Kansas reports rain needed, showers last week being ery llcht; oats all in stack. There is some thiesliing, but quality and yield are only fair, millers miking no effort to sec wheat but taking what conies ireely. Southern Ohio reports millers taking all the heat they can get at present prices. Oats all cut and being threshed: crop light. Some leports came this morning of damage to corn by hot weather in Kansas. Iowa oat leports show hot weather too much for them; more orleos light and chaffy: yield disappointing. Kentucky farmers have not been selling wheat as fiecly as last week. While considerable has been marketed, there is more held back than there has been for years: yield and quality satisfactory. 3iillcrs ale willing to take wheat ut ruling pilce. Southern Michigan farmers are in the niidt oi the winter wheat harvest, millers taking all old wheat offered at present pi ices. Current Trade Notes. San Francisco trade Journals received dur ing the past few days contain more or less elaborate accounts of proceedings at recent con cntions or raisin growers and packers for the iuipne of effecting an organization to restrict competition and dictate prices. From these accounts it would appear that the prime movers in the project have set about to obtain the signatures of growers of S3 per cent of the raisins in the State to a compact not to sell their goods under any circumstances below certain fixed prices. New York State gallon apcles are offering it 52 50 per dozen f. o. b. Syracuse. Dear"' brand California raisins. 1S92 crop" JLie quoted at$l 37Jf f. o. b. coast for loose, unit H TSforlajeis, nearfuture shipment. A fcan Francico authority writes that this year's crop of California honey will not ex ceed 20 carloads. Sales of light amber were inado at bc f. o. b. coast this week. Xew York State brands of gallon canned apples 1& season pack, are quoted at $2 l") 2 50 per dozen lor futuro delivery. Some urdera have been placed at the inside rate. ltPterring to evaporated apricots, the Cali fornia .Fruit Grower says: "Drying is over and the product is largely under control. In fact the entire crop is well in hand, and three or four parties are in position to dictate prices. Eastern buyers who have deferred making purchases will have to call at the "Captain's office' this trip." CWman' Rural World says: "One of the most successful packers ot apples in the West informed the writer a few days ago that he had letters from reliable source where he did his buying and packing last season in Iowa. Nebraska and western Mis souri, and all wenc to show that they did not hae one-third of a crop, and such as survived were very inferior in quality. Certain it is that the cropof the entiie West will in the aggregate be a mere trifle, the lightest known to the trade here orelse w hei e." Acreage of broomcorn in Kansas and Nebraska is about the same as last year, and the nrospeet are lor a good cropof fine quality. The Illinois acreage is higher than last year. The crop will be late in moving, probably about the middle of Sep tember. Tradlng In Wall Street Almost Entirely of a Frofesslonat Character No Features in Stocks and Kallroad Bonds Are Equally Featureless. New York, Aug. 6. The dealings in stocks to-day weie again almost entirely of a professional character, and while there was a marked Indisposition to trade, some pressure wbb seen with an absence of de mand, which created a drooping tendency in prices andbrought the whole list down small fractions. The bank statement reflected the heavy outgo of gold last week and also the demand for currency during the week for the movement of the crops, but this appar ently had no Influence in the making of prices, as a heavy loss in cash was the gen eral expectation. The only upward movement of note was a rise of 1 per cent in Des Moines .and Fort Dodge to 9. but neither the highest nor the .lowest puces were held to the close, which was dull and heavy at or near lowest figures. Railroad bouas wero equally as feature less, no tendency of prices "tn either direc tion being apparent and the final changes insignificant in all cases. The total transac tions reached only $463,001 Government bonds were dull and steady. Close of the list: TJ. S. (sreg 116 U. S. (s coup ,...116 TJ. S. (Ms ree 100 Mutual Onion 6s 110 N.J. C. Int. There are apparently strong bnll cliques In both articles, taking good care that no points in the speculative situation capable of being turned to account are counted for less than the full bull value. Among those said to be enjoying the fruttsof the advance In corn are Bryant, Bartlett-Frazler, Patton Bt on., a M. Armstrong and W. Andrews. It is current tumor that about 1,500,000 bushels of corn was put to the clique on privileges yester day, and they got about 2.000 000 bushels more on calls to-day. The sellers of the lat ter weie the parties who were climbing for September corn near the close to-day. IV heat was tame in the midst of surround ing bullishness and activity. It managed to secure an advanco of c, while corn is lo higher, oats up c. pork 30c, lard 17K &nd ribs 22Kc since yesterday. The situation in wheat was looked upon as essentially different from that in the other pus. Cables were easier and dull and do mestic markets slow with the local trade of small volume. News as to the wheat crop was In the main favorable and while the exports from both coasts were nearly 1,500.000 bushel larger than the week before.tlie avail able stocks are reported heavy and about 9,000,000 bushels in excess of those of a year ago. In addition theie was a 1 cported lack of foreign ordors at the seaboard. The heavy receipts at the winter wheat markets continue a depressing feature. Corn was active and excited. The shorts bought fieely. Dispatohes fiom Kansas City stated that tne tompeiature tlieie was the hottest of the season and that unless rain came immediately the crop would undoubt edly sufTor. The State report of Kansas in creased the acreaze 7.( per cent, but 'aid corn had been greatly Injured In some places by drouth. Advices of hot winds were heaid of from some quarters and the plant was said to be shriveled up and in a critical con dition. a Oats were fairly active and an trnsettled feeling prevailed. The opening was Irregu lar at JiQ&c advance. .For a time the mar ket held steady, but liberal unloading by lonss created weakness and prices leceded 7c. There was liberal selling by the ciowd on the break, but as corn was strong and higher It stai ted the crowd to buying. Thei e was also liberal buying for the outside and prices advanced K2&c and closed firm at the top figures. The one thing needful to make the pro vision market broader and srrougor was an increase in the outside trade. This has come with the big unturn In pi-ices. Country houses that would not buy a barrel of pork at $10 are now rushing in buying ordets at $12.95. The same is true or ribs and lard. Commission houses nil day long bad 1 nsh orders to buy products at top prices. The higher cablet on lard, the light hog move ment, the anxious buying by shorts and the help of the big houses interested in higher prices all made a big bull market. Theie was good selling on the bulge ,by heavily loaded local houses. Freights were firm at the recent advanco at 2c for wheat and 2Jo for corn to Buffalo.
