PLANS OF BIGELOW ExpL ained to the Park Committee While Out in Carriages. A SHELTER HOUSE AT HIGHLAND. Aa Observatory at f chenleT and a Driving Track Aronnd. It COMMITTEE SURPMSED . AKD PLEASED Tbe visit of the Park Committee to Highland and Schenley parks yesterday was a pleasant and profitable one to the 14 members of the committee who attended. Business prevented the attendance of Mayor Gourley and Controller Morrow. It was the first trip for several of the mem bers to either of the parks, and great was their surprise as they viewed the city's great playgrounds. Chief Bigelow acted the role of guide with. assiduous attention to details. He met the committee and a few lowspaper men with carriages at the cot of Highland avenue and drove lireet to Highland, the Chiefs favorite i t the parks. The numerous long drive ways here were carefully traversed, the irarirovements already made explained and noted, and the splendid views of the Alle gheny valley obtainable from 3It- Bigelow were greatly enjoyed. Then the newly ac quired tracts of land were inspected and 'he Chief and Superintendent Paisley ex plained to the committee the improve ments they intend to make. They told of the broad driveway which ""HI begin at Stnuion avenue east 'f Highland averrue and run down lirough the Negley rnn ravine until it '.Tikes the old water basin, the top of fhich will be cut down a few feet to adapt t to the grade and formed into a broad riveway, the bottom of the basin being .nade a pretty little lake. A shelter for Ficnlc Parties. T7p in the ravincthere is an old mansion louse which is being remodeled to iorm a helter for the picnic parties who visit the lark daily, and the broad piazzas that are eing built around the old dwelling will lake it an attractivexetreat at all times. Before leaving the park the Chief took he visitors to view the Fite and Flinn roperties fronting on Highland avenue, o skillfully did he explain the necessity of dding them to the park in order to secure respectable entrance that one or two meiu ers of the partv who had previously op osed the purchases enthusiastically de dared in favor of thevn. Superintendent Mcli'night ceremoniously relcomed the visitors on arrival at Schen ey Park and thereafter became their escort. There were three large Sunday school pic lics scattered through the groves and rchards, and on being informed that this ras an almost daily occurrence the visitors ere astonished that in such a short time his park had become so popnlar. Nothing rorth seeing escaped attention. Every nain driveway was traversed in ,carriages, bd some of the new bridle paths', on the rjutu mil were tramped, over. Stone Quarry In the Parle, The handsome retaining wall being built1 n the west hill of stone quarried in the park and the system of road building being pursued were examined and tavorably com mented od. The extent of the stone quarries and the bustle and activity displayed there were a revelation to most of the visitors md were examined with interest. All ther points of interest and im rovement operations were sim arfy inspected, and, while a tasty jncheon was being served to the committee it the orchard on the mot elevated point in the park, luture developments were talked n and Chiel liigelow unlolded some ol His dans. One which will probably be exe uited this year is a half-mi e driv ng track which will be formed )n the crest of the south hill from which .he Court House, the East End Valley, Oak aud, the Southside and the Monongahela Valley may all be seen by simply turning he head. "With very little expense this jeautiful hilltop can be converted into a plendid oval track, and in the center of the ival space there is projected an observatory iinilar to that at Tairmount Park, Phila lelphia, from which the view of the sur ounding country will be greatly increased. Why Driving Park Is etled. The necessity for a driving track in the sark, as explained by Mr. Bigelow, is that here are so many fast horses in this city md no place to speed them. It is as natural or a man to speed a good horse as it is for he animal to eat, and at present, having no ither place, the owners use the park drive rays to test their nags in spite of the vig lance of the police. This is not only langerous to the life and limb o'f tilers but disagreeable to those who lesire to jog along and enjoy themselves juietly. By providing the fast drivers a rack, as other cities are doing in their larks, there will be no excuse for the use of he driveways for that purpose and it will crve to popularize the park in other wavs. Before leaving the park the committee ras treated to the spectacle of the big lephant taking his dailv bath in the pond. Vt the oval where the athletic contests took dace on the Fourth the amphitheater seats re still in position and Chief Bigelow is asking preparations for another series of ontests to take place some Saturday after loon or evening before the building of the iew conservatory is begun. Prof. Kirsch ier, of the East End Gyms, will probably e called upon to superintend the arrange ments. The idea met with the hearty favor f the Park Committee, who left the park ast evening enthusiastic over the question f public breathing spots. A. Henry crossed the great drink a few years ago, leaving a wife in Germany, who became but a fleeting mem ory in Henry's mind in the course of time and he took unto himself another wife. Conrad Mendel, the contractor, happened to know something of the domestic rela tions of Snyder and when he learned ot ttw German's forgetfulness a message went back to the Fatherland for information. The latter arrived a few days or so ago, and as a result Snyder is under 51,000 bail for bigamy thanks to the legal process of Alderman Scliellnt-fn. Snyder is the father of two children by his second wife. WEEPING WOHER IS COUBT. A Prisoner's Nearest Relatives Make a fecene In a Court Boom. There was a tinge of pathos in the case of William Piezuickel, charged with robbery, when called by Magistrate McKelvey at yesterday morning's hearing in Allegheny. The accused was surrounded by his wife, their tour small children, his mother and three children, and the sorrowful aspect of the prisoner, together with the piteous lamentations of the women, so affected the Court and offioers that it was deemed ex pedient to nnntinne the rasa until this morning. The mother was seized witlf hysteria, and had to be taken home in a carriage. Reward tor Succ-ss.
